Statement that expresses a meaning which differs from what those words would appear to express

Or, when the opposite of what is expected occurs


I am not proud, and I do not claim to know all, so would be happy for someone to tell me if my understanding of irony off base.......

this appears true.....i do think theres some wiggle room in there,though...i think "pot calling kettle black" is also an example of something ironic....

a loose example of irony might be marv albert calling someone a pervert...

He said that he "seen" him and that he didn't talk stupid, when it should have been I "saw" him.

That's always been a personal fave of mine, too. I still remember some guy getting pissed at me on a forum and saying something like "whatever, genious!" :sadwave:

As for irony, just ask Alanis Morrisette. She'll give you numerous examples that aren't actually ironic, but who's counting?

Well, no ... Alanis is actually a genius. She titles the song "Ironic" and then lists things as ironic when they're really not ... which is in itself ironic and renders the entire endeavor one huge example of irony. Or not. My head hurts.

-On Nov 6 2006 Pelosi-Obama and Crew proclaim economy is worst since great depression--

1. Unemployment was down to 4.4%.
2. 92,000 new jobs created in October.
3. 470,000 new jobs over the last three months.
4. Our economy has now added jobs for 38 straight months.

They then sweep into power for past 4 years -pres last 2 years--and we do in fact have worst economy since great depression--

---and tell you we are headed in right direction-
