You would think that they would have the technology to read those things from the home base rather than sending a guy out to read them

I remember looking out the front window of my old house about 5 years ago and watching the meter reader traverse the neighborhood on a freakin Segway.

They have an electronic reader set up in their trucks here. They just do a drive by every 2 months and collect the info that way. They don't even have to slow down usually about 40 mph when they go by here.

So they do have ways of reading without coming to the house. I guess this area is behind the times.

Smart grid.

You'll be wishing for the old days when you see all this entails when it finally comes to fruition nation-wide.

They can only remote-check when you have digital meters installed. If you have the old style (little dials) meter, they have to do it manually.

You mean the Smart Meter KD, the one that Carol Browner sunk 500K into before she got her job with Barry ?

I was more thinking along the lines of the national smart grid that the govt wants in place, and its potential consequences to our national infrastructure.

Technology is wonderful to an extent. I'm reminded of the Romans and their development of roads. It was a great way to perpetuate the growth of the Roman Empire but it also gave adversaries access to the inner cities that they previously would not have had access to.

New "roads" can cut both ways.
