Ken Griffey Jr., a 13-time All-Star and owner of 630 home runs -- good for fifth all-time -- announced his retirement Wednesday night, effective immediately, ending his 22-year career.

Griffey didn't report to the Mariners' game against the Twins Wednesday night, reportedly saying, "It's over."

The official announcement from the team is expected tonight, but in the meantime, here is at least an excerpt from WCPO in Cincinnati.

"I'm extremely thankful to have played so long. I'd like to thank my family for all the sacrifices they've made all these years. And I'd like to thank the Seattle Mariners for allowing me to finish my career where it started."

"I told the Mariners when we met before the season, that I would never allow myself to be a distraction. My hope is that my teammates can win a championship for themselves and for deserving Seattle fans. I'd like to thank everyone who played a role in my career."

Now he can sleep in his recliner chair in peace!!!

Can't believe he was never caught with the the GH/Steroids...He must have went north to Canada while in Seattle to get it.

Ditto. I remember losing my mind when I got a Griffey Jr Upper Deck rookie card!!!!

I've got 9 or 10 I think. Was figuring they would help toward my future kids' college education. My oldest son was -7 years old! :mj07:

Oh well.

As Bob Hope would sing, "Thanks for the Memories" and as Red Skelton said at the close of his show, "May God Bless"

Oh well.

I remember getting that first factory UD set with Jr.

One of the greatest ever. Thanks for saving baseball in Seattle.
