Sunderland 16 attempting to sail around the world alone :00x32

A rescue effort has been launched in hope of finding Abby Sunderland, 16, who set off her emergency beacon locating devices from the southern Indian Ocean early this morning.

She endured multiple knockdowns in 60-knot winds Thursday before conditions briefly abated.

However, her parents lost satellite phone contact early this morning and an hour later were notified by the Australian Coast Guard that both of Sunderland's EPIRB satellite devices had been activated.

One is apparently is attached to a survival suit or a life raft and meant to be used when a person is in the water or aboard a life raft.

Abby's father struggled with emotions and said he didn't know if his daughter was in a life raft or aboard the boat, or whether the boat was upside down.

"Everything seemed to be under control," Laurence Sunderland said. "But then our call dropped and a hour later the Coast Guard called."

Abby is hundreds of miles from land. The nearest ship was about 400 miles away. The rescue effort is being coordinated by the French-controlled Reunion Islands and Australia. Sunderland had been sailing in 50- to 60-foot seas and it was dark when the EPIRB devices were activated.

The Sunderlands are asking people to pray for their daughter, a high-school junior from Thousand Oaks, Calif.

No. I wouldn't.

:s1: <--- Him.

I hope the girl is found. Can't imagine what would possess a parent to let a 16 year old girl do this, other than for their 15 minutes of fame, and maybe money? I don't know. Just can't imagine it, myself.

A 16 year old girl from Aussy already did this. So no World Record was on the line. Plus, her 17 year old brother already did it. So she wouldn't even have been the first in her family to do it:shrug:

I highly doubt she'll be alive. If they find her body I'd be shocked.

At least she died doing what she loved. If you are going to die, might as well be doing something you love.

I have no problem with her doing it. What I have a problem with are the people that are going to risk their life to try to save her. THAT, I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH:nono:

Chadman.....to answer your question...The brother already sailed around the world (at 17).

Yeah, they did a segment on the Aussie girl a few weeks ago on ESPN. In that same segment, they mentioned that a 13-year old boy climbed Everest recently (although he was with others, obviously). I could barely match my socks when I was 13 years old, and this kid is climbing Everest? :scared

If you can afford to do this, then chances are you already have a good amount of $$, no??

Either way, I would not have let this happen were I the parent because I can think of no bigger tragedy than to outlive my children.

What is wrong with you ? How will people flying over in an Airbus to check on her risk their life ? How will a passing boat risk their life ? This is not a rescue in the Bering Sea. Pray for this girl. She will be alive and found. She manually activated her handheld GPS.

AND No I wouldnt let my 16 yr old attempt this but what about parents who let their 18 yr old backpack through foreign countries....without satellite phones.

Ummmmm King.......I am not referring to a Crab boat rescue off the coast of Alaska. Nor am I referring to the Quantas flight doing a flyby.

But I can tell you this, if you head out where she is by boat it is dangerous. And it is also dangerous to any aircraft/helicopter to "hover around" that far from land. Not just because of the weather but because of fuel. Many people have died trying to rescue people in remote locations.

Go ask the Aussy Coast Guard if a rescue in the middle of the Indian Ocean is safe.

If you think going way the fuck out there isn't dangerous then you are smoking something mighty powerful.

Oh and there is no such thing as "calm seas" where she is. There is a fucking reason why no boats or even aircraft go near there. She's not in a fucking bubble on the Truman Show ya know.

Abby Sunderland Found Alive And Well By Search Plane

JOHN ANTCZAK | 06/11/10 02:59 AM | AP

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. ? A family spokesman says searchers have contacted a 16-year-old Southern California girl who was feared lost at sea and she is alive and well.

William Bennett said late Thursday night that searchers aboard an Airbus A330 spotted Abby Sunderland's boat in an upright position and made contact with her via radio.

Speaking outside the family's Thousand Oaks home, Bennett said Sunderland said she was inside the boat and doing fine with a space heater and at least two weeks worth of food.

Bennett said the mast had broken off the disabled boat.

He said a fishing vessel was en route to pick her up. The vessel is expected to reach her in about 40 hours.

"the bunker"
it`s high time they made these idiots pay some rescue insurance beforehand...

if it`s not absurd enough that these parents are willing to play russian roulette with their children`s lives(not to mention the would-be rescuers who are endangered trying to save their asses),the least they could do is buy some recue insurance so everybody else isn`t stuck paying the freight for their irresponsibility and stupidity...

seems like having gps and mobiles available makes these idiots a lot more reckless and a lot more likely to take risks that endanger lives and result in expensive rescue efforts......

glad the girl will be rescued...sorry she has parents that are derelict...

I didn't think she'd be found alive....good to see she will be rescued.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/06/11/missing.teen.sailor/index.html?hpt=T3

And GW...easy boy. What the fuck is wrong with what she did? She wanted to challenge herself and go for it. I have no problem at all at what she did. It is better then what lots of teenagers do at that age. You have to admire her determination and drive.

Now as for the rescue, that I do have a problem with. If you are going to do something that dangerous for no reason but to "challenge yourself" then you shouldn't ask others to put their lives in danger to rescue you.

my dude...she`s 16....she`s not fully cooked yet....she`s in the middle of the indian ocean without a mast....in bad storm season...alone...

if something had happened...she capsized,,,her gps failed...she became gravely ill.....the mast hit her....theres no help....

i would NEVER allow a child of mine to do something so dangerous...so reckless....

it`s almost like this family is playing russian roulette with their kids....i have no clue how her parents slept at night...

it`s insane....imo....

I was on a 35 foot sailboat once that took several knockdowns and was pretty damn scared. It wasn't 60 mph winds and those kind of seas either. Maybe she is reckless and her parents are idiots but I for one utterly respect her and others that have done it before. :0074
