Glenn....If you intend to or actually go to Vegas often you should make sure that you get player club cards....as you can see I am not a big gambler & i still get deals from the hotels.

I don't go often, but I'll definitely do that. The last time I went I got cards to each place I visited, but I really didn't spend a lot of money. It's getting to the point now when I go to Vegas that I spend as much, if not more, on dinners, shows, etc.

I finally started to read the article. I quit after I got this far. It's all bullshit.

Las Vegas is a goner. The homeless population is out of control. The real estate is far worse than I have seen in the media (no surprise there). The towers of condos are ninety five percent vacant with zero activity. The streets and parks are in decline. Local governments are busy making cuts and fighting unions. When I ride the streets they are deserted, a big change from 2006. The major casino companies have all but moved the casinos out of Nevada. Rooms and restaurants have been closing for years, even while they finished the new projects. The entire town is a skeleton staff providing substandard service and decaying properties.

Jack,

Since you're a Vegas pro, when do you think is the best time to go (as far as price/deals)? I typically avoid it in the summer, but I've heard a little before/after Thanksgiving and/or Christmas are good times to go since it's less crowded and the prices are better. Any truth to the rumor?

I don't really know. I'm like AR182 and always get comped. I don't remember the last time I paid for a room. Busy times are Superbowl weekend and March Madness and I think the summer is slow because it's so damn hot.

I don't mind going during the summer because I like to hang out with the wife & sometimes friends by the pool (always in the shade) & watch the scenery.

Just use your players card when you go and you'll start getting the deals too.

No kidding, I get them every single day of the week. I mainly play the video poker too

Give them a few hours of BJ here and there and the offers roll in.

Uh, I think I'll pass on 'giving them a few hours of BJ.' I don't plan on getting that far in the hole. :142smilie

Thanks for the info though. I guess I didn't realize it was that easy. But apparently I didn't spend enough the last time I was there because I haven't had any offers. Guess I'll have to step it up next time.

On the course!
Jesus, read that crap and just go blow your brains out. :0008

That's what I'm saying!

If you have never been there.........you'd think you'd get mugged the minute you stepped off of the plane!

And if you live there, you are sitting in your garage with the car running!

Do you see his posts in the Political Forum, lol. Same type of stuff, one article after the next. The sky is falling, the government is trying to watch you take a shit!, etc. He believes all this shit then calls you the idiot for criticizing his recommended reading selections. Sad.

Has anyone been to Vegas RECENTLY? I keep hearing all the doom and gloom, but when I was looking at trips a few months ago the prices seemed right in line with what they always are.

Also, I noticed a comment on that Web site from a guy who said he went there in 2008 and it was dead. Really??? When I went there in 2008 the place was f'ing booming.

Just wondering if anyone out there has firsthand experience of what it's like over there now...

Just returned June 8th - had a blast actually made a few dollars - seemed pretty crowded to me- but hell I suppose when ur hammered out of your mind for 7 days straight=judgement impaired!

The monster party is Rehab, which has been described as "spring break on steroids," even though bare breasts are taboo. Now in its seventh season, it started for locals who worked in casinos and elsewhere to let loose on their day off, says Vegas Hard Rock chief marketing officer Phil Shalala, 37, sipping a Red Bull energy drink. Word spread, and now "we might get 4,000 on an average day. Last year, in one of the worst years for this economy, Rehab (revenue) was up 20%."

This season, it's up 19.6% over last year, he says. Admission typically runs $50 for non-local men; $20 for women who don't live in Vegas. Locals get discounts or get in free.

Been going to Vegas 2-4 times per year for about 20years...easy trip from Phoenix.

IMO...the article is pretty close to reality although if you wait long enough, Vegas will come back. Both LV and Phoenix have a housing market that will take ten years to come back. Before returning to the stock market, keep in mind that the banks have stopped foreclosing and are letting thousands stay in their homes for free so they don't have all of those assets on their books.

Re: the casinos, service is no longer near their top ten in priority. It is near impossible to get drink service on a regular basis, you can't find a LV newspaper in a Harrah's property (they are in a dispute for over four years), BJ now pays 6:5 just about everywhere and the comp schedule is tighter than ever for the mid-level player. No more free drinks in the sportsbook or even if you are playing video poker at the bar.

Harrahs will own the entire east side of the strip from thier property to Planet Hollywood. People quote increased numbers at pool parties but, the casino take has been down for 23 of 24 months. (you should read the las vegas advisor)

Anyway, we still make the trip, take advantage of the good resturants and still get comped for the room. I don't play 6:5 BJ, I make my sports bets online and then go to the book to watch and our gambling budget is way down. Vegas will never be what it once was in terms of appealing to the 30-50 year old but, it will come back.

Thanks for the info. I have to admit, every time I look at your name I crack up because it makes me think of the 'MacGruber' skit on SNL.

And I hear you about the inebriation. I think the last time I was there I did ok when I was sober, when I wasn't sober? :sadwave:

I was playing poker with a guy at the bike who used to live out there and work in real estate. He said it will probably be about 10 years until prices get back to what they were, fwiw. I was there in January and don't recall it looking like the end was near. Stayed mostly on the strip so cannot speak about places like Lake Las Vegas, Boulder Highway, North LV, etc.
