Kid hates brushing his teeth....

My son just turned 3 and absolutely hates brushing his teeth. Looking for a little advise from some veteran parents :0074 . I have to tell him either he brushes his teeth or he goes to bed... Is there a way to actually make brushing his teeth fun? :shrug: Any advise I would be greatly appreciated..

I had the same problems with my 5 yr old then I got some of the worst possible pictures of peoples teeth and told him................this is what happens when you dont brush your teeth......:nono:

I'm not a parent (yet anyway) but just tell him that his teeth will fall out if he doesn't brush 'em. Then ask if he likes to be able to chew whatever his favorite food is. I'm sure little LDB will get the point! GL bud!

Take him sihopping and let him choose his favorite kids tooth brush. Also buy a kiddie tooth paste that he likes. Talk to him in an encouraging tone when it's time to brush his teeth. They both work, but postitive reenforcement is better than negative reenforcement in the long run.

Best of luck with your son. I have a 3.8 year old daughter. We brush her teeth religiously day and night, but she already has a couple of cavities. Take saint's advice seriously. No sodas. Period.

I had a little trouble with this task, but not much. We always bought the kids a cartoon brand toothpaste. Those are fun, and they really taste pretty good. My son's favorite was the Fairly OddParents toothpaste, lol! My daughter who is older had Blues Clues toothpaste.

They also have the mechanical type toothbrushes geared for kids that makes noise and the brush spins around. Those are fun too.

Personally, I think threatening and showing nasty teeth to them is counterproductive, but maybe that would work too.

Take the kiddo shopping for his favorite toothbrush. He's more apt to use it. Yeah...and a fun toothpaste, too.

I did take him to the store and let him pick out his toothbrush and tooth paste.. It seemed to get a bit easier when he enjoys the taste of the tooth paste. I think all the ideas are great! Thanks alot for the advise guys, really appreciate it. :toast:

Bakugan toothpaste is the favorite in our house right now. If there was a Wolverine one, I'm sure that would have been the choice.

They are all the same company just different labels.

Your approach should be tailored to your child's personality. I would make it positive by default rather than negative.

Some kids will respond very well to picking out their favorite and making it an adventure.

Others respond quite well to the back of the hand. Hell, if he doesn't brush his teeth it may be beneficial because the cheeks won't swell as much.

I agree with the comments of brushing your teeth at the same time and getting a toothbrush/tooth paste that he likes.

Another big thing that helped for us, was his cousin who is a little older spent a week with us... He brushed his teeth without issue, we told our son to watch how 'big kids' brush their teeth and it made him want to do it.
