So I was at the post office yesterday, swiped my card as a credit, clerk checks it and says "I need you to sign your card" while it says see ID and he's looking at my drivers license. I must say, I almost lost it. Granted the guy working there appears to be on the "special" side, but I was in a hurry (golf lesson).

So I told him I'm not signing the card because one there's no room now and two I was just mad at the situation. Of course the guy goes, "You have to sign it" and procedes to show me a nice little sign that says the same.

I paid cash.

Would he have still questioned me if I said I would just use it as a debit? Was my State issued License not enough proof? Anyone else have a similiar post office experience...I'm just glad I didn't make a scene----this time

Every credit card out there says "not valid unless signed" on the back. The guy was perfectly correct in asking you to sign it. You should be grateful he was trying to act in your best interests instead of giving him shit and being a douche about it. Sounds like you're the "special" one. Or maybe you just like to whine about inconsequential shit? Either way, call your credit card company and ask them if your card needs to be signed ... then let us know what they say.

I always put SEE ID on mine as well. I get asked for my ID maybe 10% of the time I use my card. Never had somebody ask me to sign it.

Tons of places have you swipe your own, and I've noticed that seems to take the cashier out of the ID checking process. I've wondered several times if the customer swiping absolves the business if the customer is using a stolen card.

On the course!
Writing "SEE ID" is one of the biggest urban legends out there.

It doesn't mean shit.

No one has to accept your card if you have not signed it.

If you had time to write "SEE ID", you had time to sign the fucker.

I pick up the mail at our P.O. Box, which makes me a regular at the postal counter for certified/oversize/postage due, and then frequently back mailing stuff at 10 minutes to 5:00 as well.

Twenty times a year, maybe thirty times a year, for the last eleven years, I see this "credit card has to be signed" surprise/drama played out in front of me. It's prominently posted, and the post office makes no exceptions.

It's what the credit card issuer requires, too.

Certainly doesn't seem a big deal to me, but the typical shock and disgust displayed by the customers is amusing.

Clint,

I'm willing to listen to why signing the card is somehow detrimental. 'see id?' Talk to me, bro. Why won't you (and apparently others) sign the card? I'm genuinely curious. I've never heard of this 'see id' stuff until this thread. Christ, you still use a rotary dial phone, but you apparently have some sort of reason for this.

I do not sign the back of mine either for the reason if my card was stolen or someone wanted to copy my signature on the back of the card

I read the initial post three times and I still don't get it.

The whole idea of putting SEE ID on the back is.........

If someone got a hold of your card and tried to use it - the hope is that the cashier will want to SEE ID before that fucking piece of shit tries to buy a flat screen TV with it. Anybody can sign the back of a fucking card. The douche bag postal guy at that counter isn't standing there all day comparing signatures. All his postal brain knows is...."uh, the card needs to be signed."

SEE ID on the back makes more sense than just a signature................or am I wrong? Again?

That was my thinking too, actually I was told to put the see ID by someone who had their card stolen and the thief learned to sign their name the same. At least with see ID (ID is asked of me around 70% of the time) they have to see a license with my picture and signature.

I dunno, just seemed more safe. And like I said, there is no room to sign now.

You're right, I'm the special one for trying to be a little safer with my credit card (or so I thought). My bad

Dealing with unsigned cards
If the signature panel is left blank...

1.Request a signature. Ask the cardholder to sign the card and provide current government identification, such as a driver's license or passport (if local law permits).
2.Check the signature. Be sure that the cardholder signature on the transaction receipt matches the one on the card and the additional identification.
3.Complete the transaction. If the signatures appear reasonably the same and the authorization request is approved, continue the transaction. If the cardholder refuses to sign the card, do not accept the card.
If the card has a ?See ID? in place of a signature?

lol- an Iphone, huh? Ask Jack for my number and/or email. Thanks for the thoughts on the golf thing. Things haven't been going especially well, but that's that's the last comment i'm making on that on the forum. Hit me up by a phone call or text or email.

If you have a problem with anyone, it should be the credit card company. I believe most, if not all, credit card companies state that your card must be signed in order for it to be valid. So writing 'SEE ID' doesn't work in their eyes, because it doesn't contain your signature.

Not saying I agree with what the credit card companies are doing, but the dude behind the counter was just doing his job because he has to see your signature.

as far as the credit card goes don't sweat the small stuff, your only responsible for the first $50 of unauthorized charges and most won't even make you pay that.
