Thanks for the feedback, GoldenTaint.
I'll check it out some. It's a pdf so I could search it for particulars instead of grinding through the whole tome.

There's a 1974 interview with Quigley available here:
http://www.archive.org/details/1974CarrollQuigleyInterview

About 40 minutes. Has it's moments but not enough discussion of the who, what, why, when and how.
Same site has the pdf's of his books available.

since the last post these are the book I have read, goal is to read a book a month, or around 10-12 a year. this year will probably read about 20 which is good for me...

14. .Floating off the Page (The Best Stories from the Wall Street Journal?s ?Middle Column?, edited by Ken Wells, Forward by Michael Lewis, Wall Street Journal Books, pages 279

these are a collection of well written topics, some funny some sad, well worth a read.

15. The Guide for Penny Stock Investing (Donny Lowy, 168 pages, 2000,

note a bad book, but there are some that are better, got this from the library, worth a read I guess, should have been edited better, maybe 6/10.

16. True Intrepid ?Sir William Stephenson and the Unknown Agents? (Bill Macdonald, TimberHolme Books, pages 429, published 1998,

great for facts about one of the most interesting forgotten people in history, still was not a page turner for the most part and the story could have been better...., still good for history and facts.

17. Intredpid`s Last Case (William Stevenson, Random House, 321 pages, 1983,

about 100 to 150 pages to long, some interesting points but the book rambles and rambles....on.

18. Three Cups of Tea: One mans mission to Promote Peace. One School at a time. (Greg Mortenson, David Oliver Relin, 349 pages, 2007, Penguin Books,
Audio book 13.5 hours unabridged, read by Patrick Lawlor,

litensed to this for 13.5 hours and maybe could have read it faster, good story, and learned quite a bit about the region, have more questions??

18. The Art of War (Sun Tzu, Translated by Thomas Cleary, Shambhala, pages 224, 2005,

got this from the library but plan on buying a copy, has some interesting oberservations, on life in general, and yes great historical pictures. one to add to the portfolio.

currently reading : Kafka the metamorphsis and other stories, will probably read two or three more books this year.

thanks

Finished "The Burying Place" by Brian Freeman, and my 3rd Freeman book was just as great as the first 2.

A missing 10 month old child, 3 missing women, 1 murdered women, 1 murdered man...............and an entire village of suspicious characters.

4.5/5

Have now started "The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest"................the 3rd and final of Steig Larsson's famous trilogy about super hacker Lisbeth Salander and journalist Mikael Blomkvist. About 125 pages in and not disappointed............it's good. Basically the 3 books tell one long story.

Finished the 3rd Larsson book......"The Girl who Kicked The Hornet's Nest".............and it was well worth the wait and time taken to read all 3. The 3rd book picks up right where the 2nd one left off. It is based on a secret police society in Sweden. Very good read.
4.5/5

Followed that up with the 4th Myron Bolitar novel from Harlan Coben called "Back Spin". Very light and funny, while still being a murder mystery.
4/5

Am now reading "Innocent" by Scott Turow.............the novel I referred to back in June in this thread. This is the sequel to "Presumed Innocent" that Turow wrote 23 years ago. He picks up the characters 23 years later in their lives and yep, another murder that hits close to home needs to be solved.

I was lucky enough to find a copy of this book at a small bookstore that had been signed by the author...........very cool.

Happy Reading !

I learned something today. I always assumed The Art of War was a ridiculously long novel, kind of Tolstoyesque in that aspect. Had no idea it was only 224 pages.

THE LOST DOGS
Michael Vick's Dogs and their Tale of Rescue and Redemption
By SI editor, Jim Gorant

I have to be honest: I wasn't sure I could get through the first 30 or 40 pages of this book. Gorant uses italicized parts during these pages where he tries to portray the world at Vick's operation through the eyes of the dogs there. And it's pretty sad.

However, I found it be quite a rewarding read once the I got to the parts of the book entitled "reclamation" and particularly "redemption".

The book shone a new light on my opinion of the pit bull itself, and left me in absolute awe of initially the USDA agent, Federal Prosecutor and County Officer who led the charge to have the charges against Vick brought forth, but particularly those who were instrumental in the various stages of the rehabilitation of these animals.

I would highly recommend to sports fans and dog lovers alike.

Also....I started this book on Monday night. Yes Monday night when Vick appeared on ESPN and left people talking league MVP. Hey, I understand that people do bad things all the time. However, it takes a special kind of douchebag to prey on the weak, and in particular exploit an animal whose sole goal in life is to please those around it.

I honestly believe that everybody deserves a second chance.

Fuck you Mike Vick.

6th Book Completed.

Fargo Rock City by Chuck Klosterman

3/5 Stars

The year of Klosterman took a little bit of a break. I've been so into podcasts that I neglected to read. The recent trip to the Dominican helped me get back on track. This book was entertaining, but I didn't connect with it as I have with his previous material. This book chronicles his relationship to Heavy Metal throughout the 1980's. He was critical of it, but not from a typical music critic's point of view. It was from that of a fan who grew up in a part of the country that didn't have a whole lot of outlets.

Almost done with "The Passage" by Justin Cronin. For some reason it reminds me of "The Road." A secret gov't. project goes horribly wrong and throws the U.S. into the depths of hell. Great read so far.

Wow, thought maybe we had seen the last of this thread........thanks for bringing it back to the front page. Since last checking in, have read the following crime drama books...............

"Innocent" by Scott Turow
The sequel to "Presumed Innocent" that he wrote 23 years ago, and it was even better than the original. All the same characters have aged 23 years.......one of them turns up dead in the first chapter, and the murder mystery is underway.
4.5/5

"Altar Of Eden" by James Rollins
Basically a mad scientist type of novel...........trying to create a super species. Not my cup of tea at all.
2/5

"What the Dead Know" by Laura Lippman
2 young sisters disappear from a Baltimore shopping mall without a trace.......20 years later, a woman pulled over in a hit and run claims to be one of those girls.
My first try with Lippman, and although this book was far from Top 10 material, it was good enough that I will read Lippman again.
3.5/5

"61 Hours" be Lee Child
My first Child book, and it won't be my last. Ex military Jack Reacher gets stranded in a Dakota town by a snow storm, and well, all hell breaks loose.
3/5

"Riding The Rap" by Elmore Leonard
Kind of a kidnapping/comedy/mystery/detective sorta novel. Probably won't read Leonard again.
2/5

"Play Dead" by Harlan Coben
This is the very first book that Coben ever wrote.............dated 1990 when he was in his early 20's.......it has just been re-released. Although it was sloppy at points, and a little uneven at times, it is pure Coben and that is enough to make it enjoyable.
3.5/5

"The Partner" by John Grisham
My first Grisham novel, believe it or not, and I liked it. A law firm partner steals $90 Million from his firm and hides out abroad. Of course they find him 4 years later and the story is about trying to bring him to justice. Lots of twists and turns.
3.5/5

"Evil at Heart" by Chelsea Cain
The 3rd in her series about Portland detective Archie Sheridan tracking a female serial killer.....dubbed the Beauty Killer..........and it was excellent.
4.5/5

4 more from Michael Connelly...........

"The Reversal"............his newest that came out in October. Tells the story of a child killer who gets a new trial.............Was good but fizzled out with a disappointing ending. The more I think about it, I think maybe the ending was done that way on purpose to illustrate how justice is not perfect.
3/5

"Chasing The Dime".............A chap moves into a new apt and starts getting weird phone calls on his new phone number asking about a girl. Of course he investigates, and what he finds he doesn't like.
3/5

"The Overlook"...................Interesting story that was originally run in the NY Times as a serial a few years ago. A murder, some shifty characters, etc, etc.
3/5

"Echo Park"....................This novel was excellent.
Other than "The Scarecrow" this is my favourite Connelly book.
13 years ago, detective Harry Bosch caught a murder case of a 22 year old girl and was never able to solve it. Now a man in custody for a different crime is willing to come clean about the old murder in a plea bargain. But nothing is as it seems.
4.5/5

3 More from Jeffery Deaver................................

"Praying For Sleep"
A madman responsible for a murder the previous year escapes the nut house and goes after the woman who put him away.
4/5

"The Burning Wire"
Deaver's latest in his Lincoln Ryhme series, this one is about a terrorist using the NY city electrical grid as his weapon. Oh, and an appearance by the Watchman................Rhyme's super villain nemesis.
3/5

"Edge"
His latest book.................just came out the first week of November. A professional torturer is after a cop and his family, but nobody knows why or what information he wants. A special forces agent is in charge of protecting the man and his family. Spy vs spy.
3.5/5

Presently reading "The Immortals" by JT Ellison, and on deck is "Deeper Than Dead" by Tami Hoag, "The Hard Way" by Lee Child, and "Intensity" by Dean Koontz.

Happy Reading !

Have been reading a lot of books this month...just finished "The Horse Whisperer" - light, easy reading - pretty good.

I finally gave in and just ordered a Kindle. Already loaded it up with books and I am excited to get it next week. Will be starting my kindle experience with "Son of the Circus" by John Irving, one of my top twenty favorite authors.

2. Life of Pi (Yann Martel, pages 354, Random House, 2002, read in 2010)

5. Crime and Punishment (Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Dover Classics, 429 pages, 1865, read in 2010)

Dostoyevsky has three books I plan to read before I die, The Idiot, Crime and Punishment, and the Brothers Kazmov...just need to read the Brothers Kazmov.

went to dinner with some smart librarians, a week ago, they preferred Crime and punishment of the three...

good book however the Idiot, is far better, hard to like a hero who whines and kills two people.
also in the Idiot there is a short story the prince tells the three sisters that is amazing...and again show the strength of the human spirit.

thanks
selkirk

Life of Pi is on my reading list...Dostoevsky is one of my favorite authors - I like the Idiot better than Crime and Punishment also, but Brother K. is one of my favorite books all time. Have read it 3 or 4 times.
