I am visiting a couple today who just gave birth to a premie (1 pound, 8 ounces). What is an appropriate gift for this occasion? The father is a Ph.D in math and wife is M.D. (family practice). They obviously don't need money. I feel a card might be inappropriate. There is nothing out there you can buy for premies under 3 pounds. Can I just show up to give emotional support? I am not cheap. I just don't know what to give for this situation.

In my opinion I think right now just your support will mean much more to them than any gift. Once the baby is healthier then you can get a gift.

I agree.

My lil one was born 7 weeks early and weighed 4lbs. He is an NICU for several weeks. As far as I recall, he received no gifts until he came home, even from close family. I am pleased to report that he is now a healthy 3yo boy.

Will keep this child in my thoughts.

Dont bring anything cause of now there is nothing to celebrate.. If the baby makes it through.. then bring a gift
