There is a very big auction lot within 5 minutes of me and two others within 20 mins of me and I have never even thought of going. Anyone ever purchased a vehicle this way? If so would you recommend it? I think I might take one in just to see what they are like and to see if it looks like anyone actually gets deals. Damn I watch to much pickers, pawn stars, auction kings and storage wars:facepalm:

I've bought our last two vehicles through a guy that does this as his business. Got killer deals on both vehicles.

Have had the Odyssey for over 5 years and the Silverado for over 3 with no problems.

If you have a person to navigate it for you that you trust, this is a good option.

The truck I'm driving was through an auction. Got it for $6k under book and really happy I did it. Up here you have to have a licensed dealer with you to make the purchase you can't just walk in and buy.

I think there is an existing thread on this from a few months ago.

Did a search and your right there are a few things about online auctions, but I am talking about a brick and mortar one. I dont believe I could even entertain the idea of buy a car I hadnt seen!

The auctions around here are open to the public:shrug:

o.k..i just read a few things...some scary stuff to consider...morris is right about having someone that knows what they`re looking at...

""Warning for All Used Car Buyers

8/29/2005: Hurricane Katrina Floods 571,000 Cars In Gulf Coast.
Not too many people are worried about flooded cars, but it's one of the top issues you should be worried about. In the Gulf Coast 571,000 cars were flooded. Thousands of cars and trucks were abandoned as rising waters flooded New Orleans and surrounding areas. By law, the titles of these cars will be "totaled" or branded as "flooded" by insurance companies, and many will be laundered back to used car status in these states or others. Don't think that because you live in another state that you are immune to the scams that arise out of mass vehicle floods. Always run an AutoCheck title check before buying a used car. Don't buy someone's flooded car. These types of cars almost always end up at auctions. Flooded cars may have lower asking prices so be suspicious and always run a Vehicle History Report."".....

i`m reading that trying to buy from car rental companies can be a good way to go...

They are open to the public, yet, you have to have a wholesaler's license to purchase.

Is this true of all of them? Dont doubt yall as I have never graced the doors, but that seems wierd if they are trying to get top dollar for the cars.

The auctions here are not looking for top dollar. They will move a thousand cars a day and sell to dealers all over the northeast. The dealer in turn places the car on his lot and sells it for a small profit. The cars in this particular auction here are only 1-2 years old and low mileage.

You have to be a licensed dealer in Indiana too.

I bought a car from Hertz rental back in the 80's. One of the best cars I ever purchased. It had 23,000 miles on it and think about it they have to maintain them for their clients. They had a list of cars on their lot and told me they were for sale or going to auction.

We have one place here that moves a ton of cars every day. They sell to dealers hundreds of miles around who in turn sell to people like you and me.

They make a small profit and the dealer makes a small profit

I can't just walk in and buy a car though, I have to have a licensed dealer with me to purchase it for me.

Yeah I get what you are saying, but why would the Auctions not allow the public to bid and drive the prices up thus increasing their commision. I get the quantity idea, but why leave money on the table. They have to be making this $ up somewhere.

the dealerships probaly hired some solid lobbying firms so they could corner the market....at the state level...

sounds like politics...the public gets shut out so the dealers can make a buck...

The auctions don't have to warranty the cars or sevice the cars or deal with the public. All they want to do is move cars with the least amount of overhead.
