I was in line to make a purchase at Walgreens yesterday. The lady in front of me had a total bill of $125. She took forever to count out a 50 and 4 20's. The cashier (late 20's gal) quickly counted the cash. She was confused. Then she separated the 20's from the 50 and counted the 20's and was stuck. Then she tried counting the 50 and then the 20's. She tried one more time before she went to her purse, pulled out her phone and went to the calculator app. GMAFB. Seriously?

I was in line at 7-11.....the lady (she was in her early 50's) in front of me was paying cash for her stuff. The total came to something like $29.03 and thus it was rounded up to $29.05 (we don't have the penny in Canada).

She stood there perplexed why the cashier said "That'll be $29.05". There were like 3 of us waiting in line, and she could not comprehend what "rounding up" meant? The cashier and all of us in line kept trying to explain to her what "rounding up" meant.

The entire process took about 5 minutes, and finally she left.......and I am convinced to this day she doesn't understand what "rounding up" means.

I mean we are talking basic math here, sheesh🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Fucking hell🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

I had to write a work note for a young patient at work 2 weeks ago. We hand write them. I write everything on there such as length of stay and when she could go back to work. Gave her the excuse. She looked at it and said, “I can’t read cursive” 😂🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ so, I wrote it out again.

I had a new nurse orienting. We had to give the patient 0.5 mg of Ativan IV. The Ativan comes in a 2mg/1ml vial. I said how many MLs do we give? She couldn’t figure it out without her phone/calculator 🤦🏻‍♂️

We have regular clocks in the patient rooms. I had a 20 year old young woman the other day. Her phone died. She asked me what time it was. I pointed to the clock and said the time. She said thanks, she never learned to tell time on a clock 🤦🏻‍♂️

Ask a kid/young adult someday what direction the wind is coming from (assuming full, visible sunlight). They can’t do it.

On the course!
I was at the casino in Milwaukee this year, and you won't believe the number of cashiers who don't know math!

I forget the amount of chips I was cashing in, but I took some small bills out to get the total to $1,000. It took THREE people, the last with a calculator, to get the total correct.

A friend of mine recently brought up some Armageddon in the next 7 years nonsense. He's one the best-natured people you could ever meet, but maybe not the brightest bulb on the tree.

Part of his "argument" involved some plan for the dissolution of cash-money; everything going digital. Not really a new idea but maybe it's back in vogue. Paper bills seem convenient enough, but if math literacy is as grim as some have mentioned then maybe we need more intense swipey-bleepy machines. Implants would be dystopian. Chips are down. All-in.

This thread inspires me to re-watch Idiocracy, I think it was called. Was worth a laugh.
