Going out with a Capt. after some 'Bugs', FL spiny lobster the minute the season opens, 6 per day per person for 48 hours only :scared

4 to 5 is the average death toll per year during these 2 days, due to stupidity in Monroe County,FL

Bad, How do you catch these"bugs' do you dive for them? Saw bugs similar to that if not the same when we were diving in Mex. last year.

Captain Jeff & I left the dock at 11:30 last night, on a 'flat' just off an ocean channel at midnight. There were boats everywhere

Capt. Jeff was poling the boat in about 3 feet of water, I was on the bow when we spotted our 1st lobster. This was my first time netting...jammed it, swung the net up and the 'bug' tailed out of the net...saw it in the water, jammed again & a miss...Capt. Jeff spotted it in the dark (yelling & cussing at me the whole time)...got him on the 3rd try & boated the bug.

Pretty good sized one and no need to measure, tossed it in the live well...a high 5 after getting 'spined' (Florida Spiny Lobster) from holding it wrong :nono: :142smilie and back to bugging.

Several boats ran aground stirring the mud up, we moved bayside...same thing there.

Several 'shorts' (under sized lobster) were tossed back. Saw a lemon shark (4 footer) and alot of illegal netting going on near shore. Supposed to be 300 ft offshore. No law enforcement in sight.

Bow lights went out and we headed back to the dock about 2:30 am with 8 lobster in the well.

5 for Capt. Jeff (it was his boat) & 3 for me. After a few beers at the dock & shooting the chit with another local crew of 4 that was out, headed home.

Going out again with Capt. Jeff after the commercial season starts Aug. 6th, before he heads to Costa Rica mid-Aug through Nov.

Lobster on the grill tonight :00hour

orange eyes with the light down in the water...good moon light last night for overhead light, a little windy & a low tide about 1:30 am. If the eyes didn't show, they looked like a cucumber off color in the sea grass, light didn't spook 'em, the net did.

Home-made light rig out of PVC pipe, wire & a light bulb, attached to an extra heavy fugging battery, both of us carried a handle to & from his truck.

Got a pic back at the dock with the biggest one...as soon as I figure out how to get it out of the folder, I'll post it. I can view on the computer, having a problem sending &/or copying:shrug:

Bad, last time I will bother you I don't want to be a pain but I would like to do this sometime. How many short seasons do they have? Why so many deaths in shallow water? Are there enough of these to get your limit and how long were you out. GL tonite if you go again!

No problem at all...........

One 'mini season' each year for the recreational lobster fisherman, in FL the last Wed & Thu of July each year to ease the start of the commercial season.

Commercial season this year runs from Aug 6th thriugh the end of March 2008 :mj03: ...I think.

Most deaths are due to divers down and up...for each lobster...and stupid boating accidents, in the mini season.

Estimate in the local papers leading up to the season (2 day) were over 30,000 people in the Keys legally harvesting 180,000 tails.....

that's not counting the illegal chit we saw happening last night. Read an article last week, they (law enforcement) have lobster sniffing dogs...for a 2 day season...there's only one road in & one road out. Hope they catch those fuggers!

Morris, you or anyone coming to the Keys ...let me know, we'll hook up.

I work at a Marina...we're on the water if it's my day off!!

Thanks Bad we were actually talking about going to the keys in Feb. but someone told us the beaches were man made and not a lot. Also they said the weather was hit and miss. We have been going to mex because of the beaches and weather. If you can give me info of what you think I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Whoa...nothing like Florida Tail......w/butter, a baker & garlic toast......and lemon....:00hour

Feb is perfect weather here...not alot of public beaches...I'm in Islamorada...Holiday Isle...but ya got to deal with the cubans on weekends...a few small resorts here with private beaches..La Jolla is one, The Islander, huge beach with coral rocks & pool for guests, Cheeca Lodge ($$$$$$$$$$$), Drop Anchor.....for a clean motel room and several bars within walking distance...ya can't beat the Key Lantern, bayside next door to the Lor~eL~lei rest. & bar. Cheapest place to stay in the Keys..... around my mile marker....The Sport Fishing Capital of The World.
