What? 12/30 already? Holy shit.

Independence Bowl
I hadn't even noticed before, but the Independence Bowl has really fallen off a cliff.

Gonna be a beautiful day for football... upper 40s with almost no wind.

Alright, let's try to figure out this nonsense.

Coastal - QB Grayson McCall has opted out. Wait, what? Sorry, when Coastal comes up, I think about McCall. Shit, his sophomore year he was better than a bunch of QBs currently in the NFL. I was surprised to see he's out of football, but then I saw he retired after "6-7 concussions." Ok, HC Beck has been fired. DC Johnson is interim HC until Coach Beard takes over (what, no Ted Lasso fans?). Coastal will be without LT Nick Del Grande. The two guys they have listed on their depth chart (that's right, i found their official depth chart!), McLaughlin and Jones, are both pretty bad.

La Tech - 4 defensive players with over 600 snaps are entering the portal and are not expected to play. As always... who the fuck knows? But this includes their top 2 tackles and 3 members of the secondary. If all 4 (Mason, Fields, Shelby, Richard) actually don't play, that's a hit to their defense.

Coastal is offensively challenged, no matter who is at QB. Tad Hudson started most of the year, and his #s are underwhelming. He completed 56%, averaging 4.6 yards/att (that's terrible. They literally should just run every down.), with 4 TDs and 5 INTs. The Chants, despite almost zero threat of a passing game, actually average 5 yards/carry. La Tech can be run on, as they give up 4.4 yards/rush (81st in the country).

La Tech does a lot of their damage on the ground. They ran the ball 200 more times than they threw it, averaging 5.3/carry. Coastal is 128th against the run, allowing 5.2 yards/carry. QB Baker was hurt late in the year and Trey Kukuk took over. Kukuk is a junior, but this was his first playing time. He played a little earlier in the year, but in his 2 starts the last 2 games he completed 21 of 33 (64%) for 205 yards (6.2/att) with 0 TDs and 0 INTs (and zero sacks). He is most dangerous with his legs. In those 2 games he has 35 carries for 315 yards and 5 TDs. Let that sink in.

Kicking game... La Tech has been a bit of a mess. Freshman Kaegan Kent (son of THE legendary La Tech kicker Marty Kent) has been kicking XPs the last 2 games, but hasn't attempted a fg. Drew Henderson has made 2 of 6 his last 3 games. Oddly, one of the makes was from 51 yards, which is 13 yards longer than his 2nd-longest make of the season. Kian Afrookhteh has been consistent for Coastal, making 15 of 17, but his long is 44 yards. The last 2 games, they've have freshman Philippe Laforge, who is obviously from Chattanooga, TN, attempt 2 50+ yarders. He made one of the two.

Despite recovering only two opponents' fumbles all season, La Tech is 13th in the country in TO Margin, thanks largely to their 20 INTs (tied for 3rd in the country). Jakari Foster, who is still playing, led the country with 7 INTs. Don't know if Tad will be throwing a lot of passes, but if he does... a few may end up in the Bulldogs' hands.

Motivation... eh, not a lot there. La Tech hasn't won a bowl game since 2019. They lost the Independence Bowl last year, sooooo... vengeance?

Even with La Tech possibly (probably) missing all those guys on defense, I don't see Coastal being able to take advantage. And the Bulldogs should be able to run all day. I'm waiting to see a rushing prop. DK may not release those until game day. So for now...

La Tech -9.5 (bought the point) 5.2 to win 4
First Half Under (25.5) 2 units

Thanks Smitty. Neither team has beaten a team finishing with a winning record.
LA Tech SOS 130/136
Coastal 85/136 thanks to public beheadings from VA, ECU, ODU, South Carolina, and JMU by an average of 42 point losses! Only one other close loss by 5 to a likewise mediocre squad. Found their schedule to be alarming in the talent they played.

I live 30 minutes from the Independence Bowl. No one wants to come to that shithole and Shreveport LA is a minny Houston. Nothing but thugs.
Good luck today.

I grew up in South Arkansas, and we refer to this as Shrevepit. It is a disgusting place. Jack Binion’s Steak House was decent in early 90’s but the town is terrible. I have been to 3-4 Independence Bowls when Arkansas played there.

Jealous. Windy here again , frigid temps, 7 days now sick. heading to doctor. Why do I live up north and give up 4 months a year of my life??
that gonorrhea would only be worse in the south! :)

just keep telling yourself... surviving these winters just makes you appreciate warm weather that much more.

hope you feel better soon, rock.

just watched the first 3 "drives" of the game. keep thinking "Louisiana Tech University is giving Trey Kukuk a full scholarship AND (I assume) he's getting some NIL money. To play quarterback. Seriously."

I know I'm a broken record, but why the fuck would they throw the ball once?

Music City Bowl
Coaching matchup between this guy

J/K, I actually kinda like Bielema.

Tennessee is missing their leading receiver (Brazzell, over 1,000 yards and 16.4 yards/catch), leading tackler (Carter), best cover CB (Hood, probably out), and best DL (Josephs). Their best offensive lineman, Wendell Moe, is questionable with a toe injury. DC Tim Banks was fired.

Illinois is missing their LT (Davis) and LB Jacas (6th in country with 11 sacks), as both prepare for the draft. I can't find an official depth chart, but one source lists Freshman Nathan Knapik as their starting LT today. From what I can see, that looks like a huge mistake, as Knapik is rated very poorly, particularly in pass protection. Not ideal for your LT.

(Just took a break to get caught up on the first game. 7 minutes left in the 1H. On the bright side, the 1H Under is looking GOOD.)

Tennessee has a solid ground game, as their top 2 RBs (Bishop and Thomas) average 6.0 and 5.6 yards/carry. But they get most of their yards from the arm of Joey Aguilar, the transfer from App St. He completed 67% of his passes for 24 TDs and 10 INTs, and averaged an outstanding 8.9 yards/att. The 10 INTs is high, and he's thrown double digit INTs all 3 years of his career. Luckily for him, Illinois has only picked off 6 passes all year.

Illinois has not been able to run the ball this year like you know Bielema wants to. Two of their top three RBs from last year (Feagin and Laughery) are back, but the production for both has fallen off. Feagin only had 8 carries for 22 yards their last 2 games. You gotta feed the big guy (6'3", 250 lbs) the rock!! Leading RB Valentine is averaging a pedestrian 4.5 yards/carry. Missing Davis is going to hurt that ground attack even more. They've needed to rely on the arm of Altmyer, and he's responded with his best season, completing 68% of his passes with 21 TD, a career-low 5 INTs and a career-high 8.5 yards/att. He's also chipped in with his legs, averaging 7 yards/carry on 59 carries. Tennessee has allowed 7.3 yards/att this year, 86th in the country.

Altmyer took a lot of sacks (31). Tennessee tied for 6th in the country with 3.0 sacks/game. The loss of Davis is not going to help that.

Despite the likely pressure coming from his blind side, I still like Altmyer to have a huge day. I think playing here is a big disappointment for a Tennessee squad that was in the playoffs last year.

Illinois (ML) 3 to win 3.9
1H Under (31.5) 2.4 to win 2
Illinois TT Over 30.5 5 to win 5

And here's a fun one I'm going to throw in for shits and giggles...

Tennessee to score first and lose 1 to win 4.5
