Well obviously Iam gonna be on the cash cows..err I mean Central Michigan. Is it me, or has Central Michigan been veryyyy kind to the MadJack members this season  I`d say yes :D

Creighton opens up as a 4 point favorite - which seems exactly correct IMO.

Some thoughts about the upcoming game.

1) Creighton's starting center is only 6-8 and their backups don't appear formidable enough to contain Kaman, if Chris plays to his abilities and draws fouls which he should.

2) Kyle Korver is a great player. I don't think we should try to double-team him. Rather put different players on him during the course of the game, with Manciel, Robinson, and Wallace taking turns.

3) CMU's biggest weakness is obviously turnovers, average nearly 18 per game. Creighton has caused 18 or more turnovers in 12 of its 33 games. This is the Chippewas' greatest concern. BUT.... The best defensive games of the Blue Jays in causing turnovers occurred on their home court in 10 out of those 12 games. ALSO... CMU turns the ball over a not-so-bad 13 times per game if you subtract out Kaman's five per game. If Chris plays well offensively and defensively, that will easily negate the effect of his turnovers.
In summary, CMU's turnover statistics versus Creighton's defensive figures MIGHT be a little deceptive.

4) Kaman MUST stay out of foul trouble. The high caliber three-point threat of the Chippewas works best on the inside-outside passing game. One thing I noticed in the MAC tourney games is that Kaman picked his spots to try to alter or block shot attempts. Very smart. If a player has an advantage over you on a certain play, let him go. If he makes the shot, go down to the other end of the court and make them stop you. If he misses, you're in good rebound position.

5) Ticky-tack fouls will probably be to a minimum. At this level, the referees tend to only call fouls when it negatively impacts the overall play.

6) Besides Korver, who else on the Blue Jays can shoot jumpers? If they rely on a lot a drives to score, that bodes well for CMU. Chris Kaman can do what he did against Kent - ALTER shots if not block them. And Creighton maybe a guard oriented team, but the whole MAC is guard oriented with the exception of CMU. CMU has faced GREAT guards out of the MAC with the likes of Ronald Blackshear, Mike Williams, Nick Moore, :hail Chris Williams etc...Looking at some rosters and past news and results, nobody in the Missouri Valley has a Chris Kaman type of player. And of course I know they knocked off Florida last year - but Florida doesnt have Chris Kaman. And of course they will double on Kaman maybe even triple, so he`ll dish it out to Wallace, Beerman, or Manciel and they`ll knock it down. CMU has consistently hit 50% from the field like every game...and its not a fluke.

7) All four of the MAC teams who made it to the Sweet 16 since 1990 did so on neutral courts. That's what CMU has at this venue.

8) Creighton has a big advantage in terms of tournament experience. Fortunately CMU won't be as intimidated by the name on their jerseys, the conference they are from, nor do they have to play in front of a hostile crowd.

9) Who will bring more fans? There shouldn't be much difference. Salt Lake City is easier to fly to from Omaha than from Lansing, while CMU will have a much larger alumni base living in the region.

10) Famous CMU Alum to be at the Game, Dick Enberg :D:D:D He gets in free of course, since he will be the play-by-play announcer for CBS.Kareem will be one of the analysts. It will be interesting to hear what he says about Kaman. I hope he tells Chris he needs another year in college to hone his skills.

Overall, I love this match-up and look for the Chippewas to be victorious. That being said, Creighton isn't 29-4 for nothing. CMU could also easily lose.

My Pick Central Michigan +4

Final Score: Central Michigan 82 Creighton 79.

Early Warning: No. 11 Central Michigan

Turnabout is fair play, and Creighton is in danger of suffering at the hands of an underrated mid-major team. The Missouri Valley Conference has a growing reputation for strong play in March, but the Mid-America Conference has long been the home of NCAA sleepers. Just last year, Kent State rode a No. 10 seed to the Elite Eight. Is Central Michigan next in line?
Strengths: They don't get much stronger than Chris Kaman. Like Western Kentucky's Chris Marcus, only healthy, Kaman is a man among boys at the mid-major level. The 7-0 center averaged 22.7 points and 12.3 rebounds this season, including double-digit rebound efforts in 16 of the team's final 17 games. The Chippewas played an awful non-conference schedule, but Kaman did manage 30 points and 21 rebounds against a Michigan team that finished third in the Big 10. But Kaman isn't the only weapon. A more typical mid-major frontcourt threat, Mike Manciel averages nearly 17 points a game. Guard J.R. Wallace picked up his outside production late in the season, including 11 three-point field goals in three MAC tourney games. Four of the team's five leading scorers shoot 49.8 percent or better from the floor.
Why they'll beat Creighton: With only one player taller than 6-8, increasingly little-used Joe Dabbert, Creighton doesn't have the size to keep Kaman out of the middle. Even with Kaman in the middle, Central Michigan isn't a great rebounding team, but neither is similarly-undersized Creighton. A good defensive team, Creighton still had a tough time keeping the score in the 60s in games against talented offensive teams like Notre Dame, Xavier and Southern Illinois. Central Michigan led the MAC in points per game and field-goal shooting, and they'll look to play a game centered on outscoring the Blue Jays. Trouble: Central Michigan isn't nearly as good a defensive team as last season's Kent State squad. They rank near the bottom of the MAC in field-goal defense, a troubling stat against as good a shooting team as Creighton.

Thanks Chris :D

Congrats on a great season Hellah...if Central Michigan were to upset Creighton, how do you feel they match up with the Blue Devils. Is there a possible huge upset in the making?

well anything can happen. Duke doesnt have an inside game at all and without the guards they wouldnt have beatin NC St. But I dont wanna get to far ahead of myself. Gotta beat Creighton first - but if its Duke and CMU, it`ll be real interesting to see how Jay Smith will adjust to Coach K's D. IMO I think it would be a good game because of all the great players that would be on the floor.

CMU looks to win battle of Mid-Majors

By Jeremy Speer
Life Assistant Sports Editor
March 19, 2003

The men?s basketball team wants to give Creighton a shot of its own medicine.
?It?s a great opportunity for us with two Mid-Majors,? said sophomore forward Tony Bowne. ?We want to go out there and gain a little respect for the Mid-American Conference. What?s a better team to do that against than Creighton??

No. 6 Creighton and No. 11 CMU will square off at 7:20 p.m. Thursday in Salt Lake City?s West Regional, the site where 15 years ago, CMU played its last tournament game.

The Chippewas lost to UCLA in the first round in 1987, and look to extract a delayed revenge Thursday.

?We got beat out there in 1987,? said Head Coach Jay Smith, the MAC?s Coach of the Year. ?Now, we have a chance to correct that. It has been a long time for us.?

While both schools are similar in size and ability, Creighton?s postseason experience makes them the favorite. The Chippewas, however, welcome their position as underdog.

?It doesn?t upset me one bit (not getting as much attention as Creighton),? said junior guard T.J. Meerman. ?I like this role. They don?t know a lot about us. We want to be a Cinderella team from a small school in the middle of nowhere.?

Tournament experience may be a factor, as Creighton is entering the tournament for the fifth consecutive season. No CMU player has been to the tournament, although Smith was an assistant coach at Michigan for three Final Four?s and an NCAA Championship.

Kaman
?I might have to pull out one of my rings from the Final Four to show the team,? Smith said. ?I?ve been there. Done it, Seen it.?

The main chore for CMU will be stopping forward Kyle Korver, one of the NCAA?s all-time leading three-point shooters. A combination of players will see time guarding the 6-foot seven-inch player, including Bowne, Meerman, senior Mike Manciel and freshman Brandon Voorhees.

?We?re going to treat him like we would any other good shooter,? Bowne said. ?We deny shooters. We get in passing lanes. We?re just going to fight through screens and try to not let him get shots. There?s no reason to be intimidated by him.?

Smith said that while Korver is Creighton?s main weapon, the Blue Jays have many other talented players. Creighton (29-4) is tied with Kentucky for the most number of wins this season.

?He?s a great player, shooter and passer,? Smith said. ?It?s not going to be an easy chore. They also are good in other areas. I think the key to their team is (guard Larry) House.?

Central is in the midst of the most successful season in school history, having won a school-record 24 games, including last weekend?s MAC Tournament Championship.

?We worked real hard,? Manciel said. ?A lot of guys believed in themselves and in one another. We have stayed focused.?

While the team is happy with its accomplishments up to this point, the Chippewas are not satisfied with a brief tournament appearance.

?I don?t think we?re fun to play against,? Smith said. ?We?ll get after you. This team has a very good basketball IQ. They are very level-headed about everything. They?re in it to win it.?

The Blue Jays will be faced with the unenviable task of trying to guard seven-foot center Chris Kaman, the MAC Player of the Year.

?They?re going to see an agile seven-footer,? Smith said. ?He can alter and change shots and has a variety of post moves inside.?

Also expected to bring offensive production will be Manciel, who was Second Team All-MAC, Honorable Mention All-MAC pick J.R. Wallace and MAC Sixth Man of the Year Whitney Robinson.

The team plans to bring the same confidence that has been exhibited all season into Salt Lake City.

?I?m glad were playing Creighton,? Bowne said. ?If we play Creighton, we?ll probably go out and play Duke. We don?t expect to lose anytime soon. It?s not fun playing us. We make you work hard for every inch on the floor We?re not going to back down from anybody.?

Korver leads ?Jays into familiar land

By Matt Schoch
Central Michigan Life
March 19, 2003

While CMU is in unfamiliar territory this weekend in the NCAA Tournament, Creighton has been in this situation before.
The Missouri Valley Conference Champion Bluejays were in the field each of the last four seasons.

Creighton defeated Florida in the first-round last year in double overtime.

Senior All-American candidate Kyle Korver leads this year?s Bluejays. Korver averages 17.7 points per game and shoots 48 percent on three-point attempts and 91 percent from the free-throw line.

Head Coach Jay Smith offered an approach that no one has thought of this season., when asked how he plans to stop the six-foot-six-inch Korver?s scoring,

?I?m hoping to pull a Nancy Kerrigan and hit his knees,? Smith jokingly said.

Speaking on a more serious note, Smith said stopping Creighton may depend on stopping its leader. Senior guard Larry House played significant minutes in last season?s tournament victory.

Korver will be the focal point of the CMU defense. The defense will use everyone from power forward Mike Manciel to point guard T.J. Meerman to defend the two-time MVC Player of the Year.

First round matchup: Creighton

The Mid-Major. This trendy term, used to describe middle-sized college basketball schools, has been popularized by the likes of NCAA Tournament-successful schools Gonzaga, Kent State and Creighton.
Perhaps the poster-child for Mid-Major success, the Blue Jays will make their fifth consecutive trip to the Big Dance when they face Central Thursday.

Here is a breakdown comparing the two ballclubs:

Guards: CMU?s guard play has been the underlying reason for the team?s late-season surge. J.R. Wallace has been steady down the stretch, scoring in double figures in 19 of 22 MAC games. His athleticism and shooting ability will be counted upon to stretch the Creighton defense.

Normally a pass first, shoot later kind of player, T.J. Meerman has added recent offensive production. He is the team?s best three-point shooter (44 percent) and hit for double-figures in the past two games.

With the Blue Jays brimming with depth, Whitney Robinson will play an important role. The senior struggled to find shots in the MAC Tournament, but will see his share of playing time in the first round

While Korver gives the team identity, Larry House is the engine that makes it run. The senior has been solid at the two-guard slot, adding much-needed offense. Tyler McKinney doesn?t shoot well from the outside (28 percent), but his passing ability makes him dangerous. Part of one of the nation?s deepest and most-used benches, DeAndre Bowden, Nathan Funk and Kellen Miliner provide shooting and athleticism.

Forwards: Central?s offensive weakness is exposed at the three-spot. While Tony Bowne is a solid chemistry player, opposing coaches view him as the fifth option on the court. His ability to knock down given open jumpers could be crucial. Brandon Voorhees?s minutes have increased as the season has gone on, as he has given solid play off the bench.

Mike Manciel quietly put together a successful season. The Second Team All MAC performer is an inside-outside threat, with the shot and the strength to perplex defenses focused on stopping Chris Kaman.

Slide Show
Player by Player Matchup

Kyle Korver is one of the best three-point shooters the nation ever has seen. The seventh-leading shooter in NCAA History, Korver is sized, skilled and unselfish. He only takes 11 shots a game, but shoots 48 percent from the three-point line. He also is the team leader in rebounds and second in assists.

Mike Grimes gives solid production at the four and should match up well with Manciel. Michael Lindeman is similar in size and shooting ability to Korver, giving the Blue Jays an outside threat when Korver rests.

Centers: No player in the country has made a bigger improvement this season than Kaman, who now has NBA scouts drooling over his ability. Kaman should be able to produce against the smaller Blue Jays, as long as he can stay out of foul trouble. Adam Dentlinger gives solid play when Kaman needs a rest.

Brody Deren and Joe Dabbert are smaller, but are no slouches. Deren is a Northwestern transfer and put together a solid season. Dabbert?s minutes have decreased during the late part of the season, but they should be back up against Kaman.

Central Keys:

1. Contain Korver: Korver is one of those players who may be impossible to shut down. Either Manciel, Bowne, Meerman or Voorhees must challenge him on both ends, and make it difficult for him to catch the ball. Help side defense must be waiting when Korver takes the ball to the basket.

2. Outside shooting: CMU has been an excellent outside shooting team this year, and it needs to carry over into Utah. With Creighton likely collapsing on Kaman, the shots will be there.

3. Play confident: The Chippewas played with confidence and focus during the MAC Tournament. They cannot be scared about the foreign territory of the NCAA Tournament. They must stick to their game play which has worked for much of the year.

Outlook: This game is being tabbed by ESPN as the best first round game in the West Regional. There is no reason to think that it will not dissapoint. Kaman and Korver are two exciting players to watch, and both teams have solid supporting casts. The committee should be commended for slating two such similar teams together in the first round.

I heard Korver made a comment about how "a matchup against Duke would be very exciting."; completely forgetting that their next opponent is CMU, not Duke. After what they did to Florida last year, you'd think he'd know better than to say something like that. Some complained that Creighton wasn't seeded high enough; kind of reminiscent of Gonzaga last year....and we saw what happened to them.

are you shitting me!?!? HAHAHAHAH oh thats good stuff bro. I like hearing things like this. Korver apparently thinks he`s playing Buffalo

If Creighton thinks they shoulda been seeded higher - then they need to prove it on the floor and stop Chris Kaman(unlikely)

thanks for the quote ;) gotta love it

hey Hellah....i like CM too....think this game is basically a pick....but, am really concerned about Creighton's press which they like to use a lot and CM's ability to handle it....especially with the TO problems they have had....wondered if i could hear your thoughts on this....i am worried that if game becomes 92 feet then CM may be in troulbe and i have no reason to think that Creighton will not employ this especially given CM's ballhandling difficulties
