(2) Denver Nuggets (2-0) at (6) Dallas Mavericks (1-1), 5 p.m.
The Denver Nuggets hope to grab a stranglehold on their Western Conference semifinals series with the Dallas Mavericks this afternoon as the scene shifts to north Texas.
The Nuggets lead the series 2-0 after Tuesday's 117-105 victory in the Rocky Mountains. Carmelo Anthony scored 15 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter in that one as Denver pulled away to top Dallas, 117-105.
The Nuggets have now beaten the Mavs six straight times this year, including a four-game sweep in the regular season.
Nene had another spectacular performance on Tuesday, pouring in a playoff career-best 25 points for the Nuggets, who won the opener of the series, 109-95, last Sunday. In that game, Anthony scored 14 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter.
The triumph, Denver's sixth in seven tries during the postseason, was the club's 15th straight home win. The Nuggets haven't lost at the Pepsi Center since March 9 against Houston and have beaten Dallas seven straight times in the Rocky Mountains.
J.R. Smith came off the bench for 21 points, Chauncey Billups added 18 and Kenyon Martin scored 12 for Denver, which has an average winning margin of 21 points thus far in the playoffs. That is the highest through the first seven games of the postseason in NBA history.
"I've been part of a lot of playoff runs, obviously, and I don't remember winning by these kinds of margins," said Billups. "The style we played at Detroit didn't allow you to win by that much because we didn't run and get up and down and shoot fast like this team does. But it's been amazing. We're really looking forward to Game 3."
Dirk Nowitzki had 35 points and nine rebounds for the Mavericks, who also received 21 points from Jason Terry.
"Denver has been the better team over 96 minutes, but we feel we're closer than the scores might indicate," said Mavs coach Rick Carlisle. "I think you've got to look at it that way if you're in our shoes. We've got to go home and hold serve and do our job there."
Dallas forward Josh Howard, hampered by injuries to both ankles, played just six minutes on Tuesday, leaving due to a sprained right ankle. When asked about the condition of Howard, Carlisle replied, "not good" but the dynamic forward will play in Game 3.
Like Denver, the Mavericks are on a hot streak at home, having won 17 of their last 18 contests as the host. However, the lone loss in that span came to the Nuggets on March 27.
"I'm proud of my team, but I still think we're humble and we have to be hungry to try and win a game down there," said Nuggets coach George Karl.
The Mavs have played well at times in this series but haven't been able to put together a 48-minute effort, falling apart in the fourth quarter in both contests. Meanwhile, while Denver did dominate its series with Dallas in the regular season, most of the games were very close. The Nuggets beat the Mavs by three, 10, two and two points in the four contests.
The teams have met just one time in the postseason, a 4-2 Dallas win in the West semis in 1988.
Game 4 of the best-of-seven series will be in Dallas on Monday.
