Storyline Quotes of the Year in 2003 (IMHO) . . .

Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson wasn't shy about guaranteeing the Chiefs' first loss of the season after Sunday's 34-27 win against Houston that improved Cincinnati's record to 4-5 and left them one game behind Baltimore for the lead in the AFC North.

"He guaranteed me last week that he was going to guarantee that after the game," said Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis. "I just told him what goes around with that -- responsibilities. To some extent, we people in this building guarantee a victory every week. That's the way you have to do it."

Kansas City head coach Dick Vermeil reacted in the positive when told of Johnson's remarks.

"Motivation to play this game is not based on some guy shooting off his mouth or making statements," said Vermeil, who has taken Philadelphia (1980) and St. Louis (1999) to the Super Bowl, winning a championship with the Rams.

"Hey, maybe they can back it up. They're playing awfully well. They've won four of the last six. They're ranked higher than us in some areas, so they've done a good job. It's time for them to do a good job. They've been drafting No. 1 with poor winning records for a long time. Sooner or later, those guys ought to stand up and play."

Cincinnati stands to be very good or very nothing in 2004; 48/1 offers plenty of possibilities to hedge in January, and even starting in December . . . Rutgers gets West Virginia at home on 10/30/04, which helps the cause; the tiebreaker was keyed to a poll on a specified date, and I have my doubts whether that is necessarily the first tiebreaker for the BCS slot, but it's an unlikely ride before I sweat that question.
