Source CFN CFN is a great site to gather college football news. They have great in depth team previews as well to check out.

I think this link is helpful in seeing which teams "should" be tested this year. I always like to wager on a team who has been tested playing an untested team who is higher ranked. They break down OOC and Conf. play and combine both. It is very easy to read. I think taking a tested team over an untested team is very profitable especially when you are getting points. Just another helpful angle to look at. Looks like the ACC plays the #1 SOS as a conf. I am starting to become a big ACC fan! 4 of the 11 teams in the ACC are playing a pre-season SOS top 10. VERY IMPRESSIVE! The ACC should and will have many "legit" teams ranked in the top 25.

Total Conf. SOS Ranking (OOC + CONF. Play)

1.) ACC ......... 17.36
2.) Pac Ten...... 27.7
3.) Big Ten ..... 31.91
4.) Big XII ..... 33.91
5.) SEC ......... 44.16
6.) Big East .... 69.86

Non Conf. SOS Ranking

1.) Pac Ten ..... 50.7
2.) Big East .... 62.28
3.) ACC ......... 64.63
4.) Big Ten ..... 66.63
5.) Big XII ..... 69.75
6.) SEC ......... 97.33

*adding up the "Overall Schedule Rank and Score" for all teams in a conference and then dividing by the number of conference members. Took these #'s from another person.

Looks like the SEC is Unmasked!

There's been lots of SEC posters here downgrading USC having a "weak schedule,"
while "playing in a conference like the Pac-10."

And, while throwing stones at USC, those same SEC fans think it's O.K. for the SEC to play "cupcake" OOC games and all of them at their home stadium, because life is so tough in the SEC.

Well, an analysis by College Football News now indicates that EVERY TEAM IN THE PAC-10 HAS A TOUGHER SCHEDULE, BOTH OOC AND IN TOTAL, THAN LSU.

*remember these are pre-season SOS's so a lot can change! I personally do not put too much weight into pre-season SOS but I think this is very helpful for OOC SOS and beginning games in Conf. play. Plus they break it down very well at CFN.

Scott,

I am excited about this year in the SEC. For the first time in a looong time, my alma mater, Bama, has a "cupcake" OOC schedule. To be quite honest, I have never been to see a PAC 10 game, but I did grow up in Alabama and I am a HUGE football fan. In our conference, every week is exciting. Over the past few years, I just haven't seen that with your conference. I will be the first to admit that I am biased, but all the numbers and all the info you can gather in this world is not going to convince myself or any other SEC fan out there that the PAC 10 is, or ever will be, a stronger conference from top to bottom than the SEC. I appreciate your posts, and your views, but I do not agree with them. SC had a hell of a season last year, and who knows, maybe they could have beaten LSU. Unfortunately, we will never know. Anyhow, just my 2 cents. Good luck to you this year. Roll tide.

I disagree. In the Pac 10 the whole season is exciting because majority of the conf. goes out and plays top notch OOC competition and everybody has been tested when it comes to conf. play. I think you are forgetting that 9/10 pac 10 teams have won the conf. championship in the last 11 years! Are you excited to see Bama play cupcakes? I know it is your team but who cares if you beat a cupcake team. I get to watch OSU play LSU, USC vs V-Tech, Oregon vs OU, and a whole lotta other great OOC games before conf. play even starts!

I will be the first to admit that I am biased, but all the numbers and all the info you can gather in this world is not going to convince myself or any other SEC fan out there that the PAC 10 is, or ever will be, a stronger conference from top to bottom than the SEC.

Isn't that the def. of ignorance? Not calling you names but what you said is basically the def. of ignorance. I always get a big kick when fans like you state your opinion but you have nothing ever to support it. You also never can counter argue the facts that are presented against your opinion. You do have the right to your own opinion! If you want to debate the issue that is cool with me, if not, that is fine too!

Good luck rooting for Alabama this year. I am a big fan of traditional programs and without question Alabama belongs back at the top of the country! I will be rooting for Alabama this year! USC and Alabama have a lot of history together.

Scott,

I refuse to resort to name calling. I appreciate your opinion as I am sure you appreciate mine. USC should have another hell of a season, and if they can get by Cal, as they were unable to do last year, they should be in line to win it all again. Out of curiosity, why all the hostility toward non Pac-10 fans? I don't consider myself a basher of any conference, wit the exception of the "Big Least", but you still came at me like I was talking about your mother or something! As you stated, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Thank you for your words of encouragement towards Bama this year. GL.

I did not call you any names and I have no hostility towards you or any other non pac 10 fans. If you think the SEC is superior that is cool, I just find it funny that fans who share the same opinion as you seem to never have anything to support their opinion. They also disregard facts that counter their opinion. I guess I am just curious. I do not have any hostility against anybody here but why if someone disagrees with someone on this board, it is called bashing or arguing? I do not need to come here and agree with everyone and make friends. It is a CFB forum and I just like to talk about CFB.

Are you a fan of Shula? Do you think he is the right guy for your program? I now put so much weight on coaching. Coaching IMO means everything in college football. I used to downgrade the importance of coaching.

Who is your pick to win the SEC?

I also be interested in your take on the South Carolina vs Vandy game. I am thinking about taking South Carolina big -4.5 over Vandy.

Scott,

Very good. Sorry I misunderstood you.

To answer your question, I couldn't be happier than I am with Mike Shula. He is "one of our own" which is huge to all the Tuscaloosa redneck alums, and believe me, there are a ton down there. He is a good recruiter and he has put together a good staff, however, don't be surprised to see us try and steal Croom from Miss St in the next couple of years. That guy is going to be a SUPER coach.

I look for LSU to come out of the west, but don't be surprised to see Georgia come out of the east and spank some tiger behind this year. The 'Dawgs are stacked and should make alot of noise this year.

I would say 4.5 is definitely low. I see Holtz and the boys cover by at LEAST a touchdown +. They are returning a ton of starters on the defensive side of the ball and the offense has nowhere to go but up. The 'Cocks have some stud athletes. Pinkins should start again at QB and they have some good recruits coming in. I am all over that game. What book are you using?

BTW, we are going to USC-VA Tech in DC in a couple of weeks. Do you see the Trojans covering 17+?

Any surprise teams to watch in the PAC 10 this year?

Is Cal going to be as good as everyone thinks?

dont' worry bama, all the pac 10 can boast about these days is OOC SOS. nothing like the SEC which has at least 5 teams ranked in the top 25 every year or championships to boast...

Guys,

No worries. I have no problem with Scott. I know he has rubbed alot of people the wrong way, but he is fine with me.
Thanks for the kind words about the SEC, Kdogg, but, guys, seriously, there is no problem here. I appreciate Scott's opinion and yours as well. Let's all work together and kick the SH*T out of the bookies this year! GL2A.

people get pissed, because somebody wants to express opinions and dork boy scott comes up with nonsense facts. all your point was saying that the SEC games are better to watch than PAC-10 games, and he comes up with his ignorance. about 80% people in this forum think the SEC is better to watch than the pac 10, scott gets all upset when nobody agrees with him thats all. this place is a forum for giving opionioins and making some money. i could care less about statistics and OOC SOS, SEC is a better game to watch, thats all.

You really are going to the game? VERY COOL! I am jealous! Out of curiousity, why are you going since you stated your a big time Alabama fan.

USC -17.5 initially looks like too many pts and V-Tech looks like the smart play. However, USC in my opinion is vastly superior in talent and coaching so USC very well can cover the spread. As of right now I forcast a tight game for the 1st half and USC breaking away in the 2nd half. I do not see V-Tech scoring more than 14pts against USC. I think V-Tech 1h and the under might be a solid play. I do not think I will be wagering on this game. For what its worth USC has looked great in practices and looks much farther ahead at this point compared to last years team who went and shut out Auburn @AU for opening game of the season. Playing @V-Tech (D.C) will not be too much for the team to overcome since they experienced opening @AU last season. If you think V-Tech can be effective passing the ball and have balanced attack, take V-Tech at +17.5! If you think V-Tech is a 1 dimensional team, they will be toast! (take USC) This will be USC best defense under Pete Carroll and remember Carroll was a DC in the NFL and he had #1 defenses in the NFL!

*Don't count on Mike Williams playing for USC against V-Tech. I will be SHOCKED if he does. Also a lot of USC insiders are not so optimistic about Williams coming back to USC period.

Any surprise teams to watch in the PAC 10 this year?

Arizona St. would be considered a suprise team. Senior QB Walter has NFL 1st round talent and before USC won the Pac 10 last year, the last 10 Pac 10 champions were lead by senior QB! My problem with ASU is they have poor DL.

Is Cal going to be as good as everyone thinks?

In my opinion YES! I am very excited to see what Cal and Tedford accomplishes this season. Tedford is one of the best up and coming head coaches in the country and QB Rogers is a top 5 QB in the country. CAL also returns a lot of talent from last year especially on defense. Last year was somewhat of a rebuilding year for CAL and they should be competing with Oregon for 2nd place in the Pac 10. (Oregon does not play USC so they could finish in 2nd place)

More from SEC fans. This is hilarious to check out.

College Football News recently labeled the SEC's conference as a whole as having the 5th hardest schedule when compared to the rest of the nation. This was the link inside my original post in this thread. The ACC was 1st and the Pac Ten was 2nd. Obviously, out-of-conference schedules do really count. However, check out the some of the emails from SEC and LSU fans about the schedules. These guys are hilarious.

SEC fans e-mails/complaints

Fans e-mails/complaints/questions are in bold! Answers are below!

You guys are completely insane. You have Miami in the Top 10 but Florida at 51 for SOS? Miami plays FSU yeah, but UF plays UGA, LSU, FSU, UTenn, and if your counting West Virginia and NC State as good teams you might as well count South Carolina and Auburn I mean you got to be kidding me. Not to Mention the games @FSU, @UTenn, and a neutral site game against UGA you guys are pathetic. If I could could you tell me your point systems and what the requirements are to work on your staff because I used to like your site but this it seems you guys are putting up thoughts with no logic behind it while still sucking up to the new ACC. ? RB

A: You're acting like we set up the formula (in our strength of schedule rankings) to make it look like the SEC was average. All we did was put the formula in place and let it fly. You're forgetting that Florida plays MTSU and Eastern Michigan along with creampuffs like Mississippi State and Vandy. Kentucky and Arkansas aren't any big deal either. Playing at Houston helps out the Miami schedule. Yeah, NC State and Virginia really are that good.

You have got to be kidding me!? What are y?all smoking to have LSU?s schedule ranked below USC. This has to be a joke ? the SEC fifth in overall schedule rankings and ACC first?! The Pac 10 second? We play at Auburn, Georgia, Florida and Arkansas. Come on. - NS

A: Oh this has been a fun week hearing from the LSU fans. Out of the 100+ e-mails from the Tiger faithful that have come in, every single one conveniently left out games against Arkansas State, Mississippi State, Troy and Vanderbilt. Let?s be honest here; this is a three game season for the Tigers. Arkansas needs a TON of work, Alabama and Ole Miss are decent, but not all that great when compared to the mid-level ACC teams (please, please, please read the previews for the ACC teams before disputing this.) You?re also conveniently glossing over that with a few notable exceptions, the SEC is cupcake city when it comes to playing non-conference games. As far as USC, yeah, there isn?t a killer on the schedule, but there are 12 games against average (yeah, I?m counting going to BYU, Stanford and hosting Arizona as average tests) to way above average teams. That?s the point and where the argument comes in. Is it better to play a schedule with three absolutely brutal games or one where every game has a slight degree of difficulty?

Last year the Pac 10 was WEAK. Unless there is a drastic change in PAC 10 performance over last year USC should have no problem winning the league by an average of 14+ points per game. It is really a shame that we will not get to see them play teams the caliber of Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas State, or LSU, Georgia, Florida, or Michigan, Ohio State, Purdue within a few games of each other. I suppose they will just be happy with another national championship blessed by the same system that had TCU ranked #5 at one point last year. They can always count on the sports writers! ? Kevin

A: Yes and no. Yes, outside of USC there aren?t any national title contenders in the Pac 10 this year, but there really aren?t many in the SEC past LSU and Georgia (I?m talking real national title contenders) and none in the Big XII outside of Oklahoma (sorry, but I?ve been burned by Texas before.) Bowl games aren?t always the best indicators, but the much-maligned Pac 10 did just fine for itself last year with USC?s win over Michigan, Cal?s win over Virginia Tech, Washington State?s win over Texas, Oregon State?s annihilation of New Mexico and Oregon?s one-point loss to Minnesota. SEC fans conveniently seem to forget about Florida?s embarrassment to Iowa and Tennessee?s loss to Clemson not to mention Alabama?s like-a-Hawaii-Bowl loss to the Warriors. Sure the SEC won some great bowls and is a great league, but there?s good football being played elsewhere too.

Your statement (about Michigan being better that Ohio State this year) has driven a knife through the heart of every Buckeye fan across the nation. I have printed your article and keep it in my office as another reminder how much the press loves Michigan. I trust you understand the depth of your prediction and won't mind being reminded of such during the Thanksgiving Holidays. As I reflect upon the last two years, I, like thousands of other Buckeye fans struggle with comments like Michigan 'still the class of the Big 10'. You, like most of the media, must be watching games with Maize colored glasses, while many of us are still attached to our Scarlet colored glasses. We'll see which color reigns supreme. Your analysis keeps the buckeye nation exhilarated. What must OSU do to defuse the 'class of the Big 10' rhetoric? Obviously, 25-2 during the past two years has not been enough. I love this game! ? JS

A: It's exactly the opposite. If you take a hard, hard, hard look at the Buckeyes with all the holes that need filling and all of the inexperience it?s hard to figure out how they?re still ranked in the top ten of almost every preseason poll. How? Why? It's Ohio State and the program is getting nothing but respect from the media looking hard at the brand name. There are still major quarterback question marks, the offensive line needs to play far better and has several newcomers coming in, and several top defensive players from last year need to be replaced especially on the line. Sure, the Buckeyes are going to be great again, but Michigan is a better and more complete team going into the season. Ohio State is being given nothing but respect by the media while everyone is generally overlooking Michigan (except us.)

Now that both polls are out, who do you think at this early stage are the most over and underrated teams? I believe Wisconsin, Marshall (others receiving votes...), and Maryland are underrated , while Tennessee, Florida, and Clemson are possibly overrated. I know Ohio State lost a lot of players, but believe they'll end up being pretty tough in the long run. What say you? Thanks.......Buckeye fan in scUMville

A: My top three overrated teams (according to the two main preseason polls).
1) Ohio State ? Yeah, in mid-October this should be one of the ten best teams in America, but to be ninth in both polls in the preseason is a bit high. Is there a passing game yet? Will the defense be able to come up with all the same magic? No way, no how does this inexperienced team get the same close wins for the last two Buckeye juggernauts got.
2) Florida - This is a good team, but there are way too many holes to be considered in the top ten going into the season. I never like to rank preseason teams like this, but how is Florida (10th in the Coaches and 11th in the AP) better than the Iowa team (12th in Coaches and 19th in the AP) after the 37-17 Outback Bowl loss?
3) Utah ? (21st in Coaches and 20th in AP). Yeah the Utes have just about everyone coming back, but would you really take them over Purdue, Minnesota, NC State or Wisconsin?

Underrated Teams ?1) NC State ? Has anyone actually done one second worth of research? This Wolfpack team is loaded, loaded, loaded. This is a top ten team on talent and it?s borderline criminal to leave it out of the top 25 like the polls did.
2) Michigan ? Everyone is just looking at the offensive backfield and missing how amazing the rest of this team is. The Wolverines should be in the top five (7th in Coaches, 8th in AP) and is one of the true national title contenders.
3) Auburn ? Feeling burned last year, everyone is overlooking how much talent returns. This is a very, very good team that will be in the SEC title hunt all year long.

I am in a college fantasy league where we select teams, not players. We start 5 teams each week, earning points for victories, points scored and points allowed. I have been looking over the 117 teams and need to find a couple "sleeper" teams who will win some games, put up some points and hold the opposing team to a decent score. Do you have any teams in mind? Also, in your opinion, who are your projected top 5 offenses in the nation, going to points scored. Who are your top 5 defenses in the nation, based on points allowed? ? RW

A: Five sleeper teams as far as victories, points scored and points allowed.
1) North Texas ? After the initial non-conference nightmare the Mean Green will destroy everyone in the Sun Belt.
2) Boise State ? The last few years should be enough to convince you.
3) Bowling Green ? The schedule is nice and squishy and the team is loaded.
4) Miami University ? MU will still roll even without Ben Roethlisberger.
5) Northern Illinois ? Jim Novak?s best team yet.

Top five projected offenses on points scored ? 1) Oklahoma, 2) Hawaii, 3) USC, 4) Texas Tech, 5) Louisville

Top five defenses on points allowed ? 1) LSU, 2) Georgia, 3) Iowa, 4) Nebraska, 5) Michigan

scott when are you going to figure it out. You post stuff like this and wonder why people find you obnoxious, misguided, and way too loud - please quit posting rah rah

How many times have you posted this rah rah nonsense and how many times have you been told to stop? it is august 21 for christ sake post some gambling info or dont post. i am sick of your posts. You start ANOTHER rah-rah USC Pac 10 thjread and then put ACC #1 in heading to appear objective and turn around and blast some guy who has the balls to admit that he is biased, meanwhile you are biased and utterly delusionally so

do you have ANYTHING to offer to this site and its users? Anything??? You even make me want to root against USC and before you started making a fool of yourself I liked USC just fine... still do... bt after having to receive your Pac 10 spam on this site for so long I find myself seeing the only way you will STF up is when USC loses a few games. for the sake of this site i hope USC loses so you will haunt another house. post handicapping info or please just go away

Avalanche you are too funny. I looked up your recent posts in the college football forum and I found exactly zero, i repeat, ZERO recent posts from you related to football handicapping. I did not want to embarrass you further and post them inside this thread. You spend ALL your time criticizing me and yet you have posted ZERO posts related to college football handicapping. Go take a look at your recent posts! I also do not understand why you give commands and act like you run this forum. Wake up and realize I do not listen to you!

Kdogg21 I did a recent post search on you too. You also have ZERO posts related to college football handicapping and yet I found plenty of posts from you criticizing me. Not sure what you are bringing to the CFB forum? I also do not understand why you try and cause trouble when I am posting with bamachuck23. He does not have a problem with me and I do not have a problem with him. We do not have to agree on everything and he answered my questions and hopefully I did the same for him. If you have a problem with me interacting with bamachuck23 then there are 49 other threads for you to choose from. You also could try contributing to the CFB forum and start handicapping some games instead of focusing on me.

I find it quite sad both of you spend all your time criticizing me and NOT talking about college football.

Take a recent post search of me and you will find all my posts are about college football AND plenty of posts handicapping games. Unfortunately I did not find the same for both of you. :nooo:

There are 50 threads here on the college football forum and you both post inside this one and criticize me. When are both of you going to realize you have no affect on me and I am here to talk college football.

Scott, my question was what do you have to offer to this site. You dont flood this site with capping posts, that's for sure. Oh by the way there hasnt been a CFB game since January. You can do a pull of my last 30 posts in this forum and chances are I am responding to your Pac 10 spam

Of course i know you wont take my "command" to quit posting your rah rah spam... you dont even listen to MJ.

You are downright pathetic

SOS is a stupid number anyway....

if you play the #60 and #61 teams, your SOS is better than playing against the #5 and #150 teams

if i was ranked in the top 10 i would much rather play two mediocre teams and have my SOS higher....

so if you are using this system to make a statement comparing schedules you are either ignorant or stupid

dr. freeze

Why would that make anybody ignorant or stupid? Do you know what those two words mean?

I think CFN used a very fair way to calculate their SOS. You do not necessarily have to agree with it. I would not classify someone as ignorant or stupid if they agree with the way CFN calculated SOS. I be interedted dr. freeze as to why you disagree with them. You used 2 games as a sample but we all know a season is 12 games.

How CFN calculated SOS....

"When looking at which team has the toughest schedule going into a season it's worthless to take into account what happened the year before since every team changes dramatically from season to season. To determine the strength of schedule, these rankings are done by the combined preseason 1-117 rankings from CFN, The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated and Athlon.

For example, USC is ranked No. 1 by CFN, Sports Illustrated and Athlon and No. 3 by The Sporting News. 1+1+1+3 equals a score of six, and then divide that by four for a score of 1.25. Oklahoma is ranked second by CFN, SI and Athlon and third by TSN so 2+2+2+3 divided by four gives the Sooners a score of 2.25.

D-I games played on the road are counted in half. If a team plays UCLA (who combines in the four polls to score 48.25) at UCLA, 24.13 points are assigned. Essentially it's as hard to beat UCLA on the road as it is to beat Wisconsin, with a score of 24.25, at home. All games against non-D-I teams get assigned 118 points. Therefore, the lower the score, the tougher the schedule. Hopefully this all makes sense. Simply put, if you don't play cupcakes at home and have road games against highly ranked teams, you have a high strength of schedule rating."

Scott,

My brother-in-law is a Va Tech alum and he bought up about 25 tickets, so we are all headed up to DC to check out the game. I really dislike VT and have no respect for their recent cake schedules, so it will be fun to see SC kick the snot out of 'em, if that is the case.

Arizona St, huh? I will definitely keep my eye on them.

I must admit, I followed Cal a bit last year. They made me some money and I will ride that horse till it bucks me off!

Thanks for the insight.
