1. Noble Causeway 2. Wilko 3. Closing Argument
Well, you would think that if you take away the beaten favorite and the third choice of the Derby, that the puzzle for the 2nd jewel would be that much easier to solve. Think again.
Third choice Bandini never ran a step in the Derby and is not back and Bellamy Road, who ran very well carrying his speed to the top of the lane despite the suicide splits, will live to fight another day but it won?t be this weekend.
Afleet Alex had dead aim at Churchill and got a very heady ride from young rider Jeremy Rose. He looked like he was going to ride the rails to victory, but could not find that final surge in the last several strides. It won?t be any easier for him since he now has a target on his back.
The Derby winner is not even the second choice on the line as High Fly has been tabbed at 9/2. He could be looking at a very similar fate to what happened in the Derby since even without Spanish Chestnut, there is plenty of speed in here to push the early splits to the limit. He has to gun from post 2 and there are at least 5 others that could have designs on the lead.
Giacomo will have to try to repeat from post 13 and traditionally, the outside slots spell disaster at Pimlico. He was very tired after the Derby according to his connections and considering how slow they came home, he looks like a bet against.
Wilko had some excuses for his off races early this year. He didn?t break in the San Felipe, was hung out to dry from post 11 in the SA Derby, and was wide again at Churchill. He has some upside to him here.
Closing Argument had first dibs at post positions and his trainer Kiaran McLaughlin tabbed slot 7 and is on record as saying his runner came out of the Derby in great shape.
Greeley?s Galaxy may end up the ?wise-guy? horse. Mid pack after a very wide trip, this guy could outrun his odds Saturday.
Of the new faces, Malibu Moonshine has the look of a club fighter that just doesn?t know he is overmatched. Trainer King Leatherbury is in a glory days mode with a 9 for 18 win slate at Old Hilltop through Wednesday and this guy could be the best of the new shooters.
Poetic justice would and should be in the sights of Nick Zito and after reviewing the early run of the Derby the other day; you have to give Noble Causeway a valid chance to rebound. He was pinballed badly and Gary Stevens had to suck out of a pocket to avoid going down. In the big field and with such a traumatic experience suffered, he was never able to re-rally. Saturday he gets a cozy slot in post 3, could sit a perfect trip maybe 4 or so lengths off a projected hot pace, and be primed to run down all the pretenders in the last 100 yards.
The best news could be the double digits you?ll get at the windows on this $1.15 million yearling purchase.
