The team I feel the most sorry for at this point coming up on the 2006 draft is Miami Dolphins.

I just got the distinct feeling that they are going to get screwed out of getting one of the top flite quarterbacks. If they think that Cutler is going to fall into their lap they are nuts.

houston doesnt need bush, they have davis, all these so-calld experts dont know there ass from a hole in ground, if they draft bush, it will be along 2 years for houston, hes great but they dont need him, they also will make same mistake bills made in getting mcgahee, when they had travis henry. mcgahee a great back also, but we didnt need him. thats why donohoe is gone, very dumb when it came to drafting, example: mike williams

think houston can trade picks, would be smart, get the best offensive lineman you can get, and help out carr

I went through about 20 mock drafts I found on the internet and felt that this one was the closest I agreed with. Hard to find ones that list the second round.

I wouldnt take brees ( damaged goods ) or Culpepper ( ethics and attitude ) . They need to figure out a way to get Cutler or Young.

Dolphins knew they had no shot at a good QB in the Draft.

Culpepper will help them if he is healthy.

So now where does this put Matt Leineart. Does he slip to the Jets or fall deeper. New Orleans must not have been sold on Leinart as a future great to have signed Brees.

Could be a trade but I think Leinhart goes to Tenn.

Then it is a question of how far Vince falls. Supposedly the Cardinals may be interested.

i read today one article that said the jets are thinking of trading up to the n.o. slot to grab leinart.....& another artilce that said that some in the jets front office are questioning leinart's arm strength.....is it strong enough to be able to pass into the winds at giant stadium....

it doesn't seem like the teams that have the higher picks in the draft think these top qbs are worth taking high in the draft.....which explains the trades...

I agree with you. Not willing to take the chance on a bust QB
possibliity. I just would not select Young. Sorry too much downside for him. If Vick cant read NFL defenses after 5 years, I doubt Young will have a chance either.

Falcons-Jets deal hinges on Schaub

By STEVE WYCHE

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 03/15/06
The Falcons do not want to include backup quarterback Matt Schaub in a trade for New York Jets defensive end Jonathan Abraham, although his inclusion could finalize a deal for the three-time Pro Bowler.

Falcons coach Jim Mora reiterated Wednesday the team's stance that no deal has been appealing enough to part with Michael Vick's insurance policy.

"Who wouldn't have an interest in a player the caliber of Jonathan Abraham?," Mora said. "The fact is that he's the property of the New York Jets. This organization has a lot of respect for Matt Schaub as a player and a person and we value him as a backup to Michael Vick."

Mora did not deny the team's interest in Abraham, which the Journal-Constitution first reported from last month's NFL scouting combine, or that the Falcons are engaged in trade talks with the Jets. He did not go into specifics of the conversations with New York other than to say the Falcons have not received an offer that would make them want to part with Schaub, who just finished his second season.

Schaub's agent, David Dunn, has declined comment about his client's status.

ESPN.com reported that the Jets have asked for Schaub and a second-round draft pick in return for Abraham. The Jets are believed to be among a handful of teams that have inquired about Schaub for months. All have been rebuffed. President and general manager Rich McKay also said Monday that no offer for Schaub has been good enough.

The Falcons have some negotiating leverage because several teams have filled their defensive end needs in free agency or used up salary-cap space to sign free agents at other positions. With a dwindling market, Atlanta might not have to exchange more than a draft picks, which it would be willing to do, save for their first-round selection - the 15th overall pick.

With so many draft picks from the past two seasons playing valuable roles, McKay acknowledged earlier this week the Falcons would be willing to trade picks for veteran players.

Schaub has two career starts, losing both, but his performances in preseason and in last season's 31-28 loss to New England, in which he started for an injured Vick and completed 18-of-34 passes for 298 yards and three touchdowns, have made the 6-foot-5, 237-pounder an appealing prospect. Schaub also becomes a restricted free agent after this season, which means he could sign with another team but the Falcons have the right to match any offer.

Mora and McKay have said that Schaub is not untouchable but his value to the Falcons - especially since Vick tends to get injured and there are no other experienced backup quarterbacks on the roster - is high enough that, at this time, they aren't willing to swap him for a player of Abraham's caliber.

The Falcons recently released veteran right defensive end Brady Smith after injuries limited him to just five games and left his availability for next season in question. A right end, Abraham has accumulated 53 1/2 sacks in his six NFL seasons - 20 over the past two. He also forced six fumbles last season when he had 10 1/2 sacks.

The Falcons confirmed they have the financial wherewithal to meet Abraham's unspecified demands for a new contract and have the ability to sign other free agents, like safety Lawyer Milloy, who was offered a three-year deal Monday.

Since being named the Jets franchise player after the season - a move that enabled New York to keep him off the free-agent market to either trade him or re-negotiate his contract - Abraham would have to agree to a contract with a suitor before signing off on a trade. If he is not moved, he would earn $8.3 million next season.

The Jets and Abraham have made it clear they'll most likely be parting ways.

Abraham and Milloy both visited the Seahawks on Wednesday. Abraham has not visited the Falcons but he could over the next few days.
......................................................................................

IF the Falcons trade Matt Schaub it will go down as the dumbest thing they have ever done. It will be worse than trading Brett Favre and mis reading Favre talent.

As fragile as Vick is and they want to trade the only QB they have that can pass half way decently.

Give them Ducket or Dunn for Abraham. No way Jets would do that . Hell give them Vick and let him run with the ball for the next five years. The Jets really arnt that stupid.

Jets trying to play the Falcons for chump change.

Holy Christmas I hate when stupidity rules the Falcons front offices.

I feel better now.

The Wonderlic situation makes for good conversation, but when it comes down to it, scoring low on this test probably will not effect where Young is drafted.................

Because of the Pennington situation, the Jets are seeking a younger player, one with starting potential.

A third-round draft choice in 2004, Schaub is highly regarded around the NFL and by Atlanta officials. The former University of Virginia standout has played in 11 games in two seasons, two of them starts, and has completed 66 of 134 attempts for 825 yards, with five touchdown passes, four interceptions and a passer rating of 68.8.

Schaub, 24, lost both his starts. But in a 31-28 loss to New England last Oct. 9 at the Georgia Dome, he threw for 298 yards and three touchdowns in an impressive outing. The defensive coordinator for New England in that game was Eric Mangini, who is the Jets' new head coach, and who obviously liked what he saw of Schaub that day.

Falcons officials are reluctant to part with Schaub for at least two reasons: First, they consider him a quality player and an eventual starter in the league. Second, team officials realize that Vick's derring-do style will always make him susceptible to injuries, and that Atlanta needs a solid backup capable of possibly starting a few games every season. The Falcons consider Schaub ideal for that role.

"We like [Schaub] and he plays a very important position," Falcons team president Rich McKay told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution earlier this week. "From our position, what it would take [to surrender Schaub in a trade] would have to be very strong."

That said, the Falcons would love to land Abraham, a high-energy defender who is viewed as one of the NFL's premier outside pass rushers. And whether New York deals Abraham to Atlanta or some other club, it's clear the six-year veteran will not be back with the Jets in 2006.

Abraham visited with Washington officials over the weekend and was set to be in Seattle for a Wednesday visit. It was announced last week that Abraham would meet with four teams, and Atlanta is believed to be among them.

The Jets last month designated Abraham a franchise player, essentially making him a one-year qualifying offer of $8.33 million, but also severely limiting his mobility in free agency. New York used the franchise tag a year ago, as well, to retain Abraham, and he missed the offseason programs and training camp before signing the one-year deal, worth $6.66 million just days before the start of the season.

Abraham has been saying for two years that he prefers a long-term contract but the two sides have not been able to strike a satisfactory deal. Any team that trades for Abraham will have to first reach agreement with him on a long-term contract. The Falcons have some history in trading for franchise players, having acquired franchise wide receiver Peerless Price from Buffalo in 2003 after reaching a long-term accord that included a $10 million signing bonus.

The Falcons also have a history in dealing with Abraham's agent, Tony Agnone, who represents Atlanta standout left defensive end Patrick Kerney. Teaming Kerney and Abraham would give the Falcons a terrific defensive end tandem.

Termed by Cleveland Browns coach Romeo Crennel as "head and shoulders" above any pass rusher available this offseason, Abraham certainly is a proven sack man. One of the Jets' four first-round selections in the 2000 draft, Abraham has consistently been among the top pass rushers in the NFL, when healthy. Limited to just 19 appearances in 2003-2004 because of injuries, Abraham, a three-time Pro Bowl performer, played in all 16 games for the Jets in 2005, only the third time in six years he has played a full schedule.

He registered 67 tackles, 10? sacks, six forced fumbles, one recovery and two passes defensed. For his career, the former South Carolina star has 328 tackles, 53? sacks, 18 forced fumbles, five recoveries and eight pass deflections in 73 games.

The Falcons appear close to landing three-time Pro Bowl defensive end John Abraham from the New York Jets but possibly at a much larger price than they initially wanted to pay.

Atlanta has agreed to trade its first-round draft pick, No. 15 overall, to Denver for its first-round choice (29th overall) and later-round selections in the upcoming April draft, according to a person familiar with negotiations.

The Falcons offered the first-round pick it acquired from Denver to New York for Abraham, which was enough for the Jets to agree to finalize the trade.

Once Abraham signs off on a multi-year, multi-million dollar contract agreement he reached with Atlanta last Friday, the sign-and-trade deal will become official and the Falcons will have the player they targeted to replace Brady Smith and improve their marginal pass rush. An announcement could come as soon as Wednesday.

Should the deal go through, the pressure for Abraham to perform could be high though, especially in these parts.

The last time Atlanta surrendered a first-round pick and gave him a big contract came in 2003 for wide receiver Peerless Price, who was coming off a career season in Buffalo. The Falcons, whose coaching staff was different than the one than acquired Price, cut Price last year after failing to live up to expectations of his contract and the forsaken high draft pick.

Atlanta initially balked at surrendering its top choice in next month's draft or backup quarterback Matt Schaub when the Jets stated that would be the required compensation for Abraham. The Falcons felt a second-round pick was proper compensation. The Jets came close to accepting Atlanta's offer until Friday, when the Seattle Seahawks offered their first-round pick (No. 31 overall).

When the Jets agreed to ship Abraham to Seattle ? a trade that could not be executed because Abraham had to agree to a contract first since he was designated by New York a "franchise player" ? Atlanta was forced to increase its bid.

The Falcons are gambling that Abraham's impact and durability ? injuries have cut short three of his six seasons ? will provide greater short- and long-term rewards than that of an incoming college player.

With 53 1/2 sacks ? 10 1/2 last season ? and a reputation that immediately places him among the top-shelf defensive ends in the NFC South, Abraham should alleviate some of the attention paid to left end Patrick Kerney and Pro Bowl tackle Rod Coleman, who had 10 1/2 sacks last season.

Abraham joins free agent Pro Bowl safety Lawyer Milloy and three-year veteran safety Chris Crocker ? the Falcons traded their upcoming fourth-round draft pick to Cleveland for Crocker ? as acquisitions that addressed the team's most needy areas.

With last season's big free-agent pick up, middle linebacker Ed Hartwell, expected back from season-ending Achilles' tendon surgery, the Falcons figure to be significantly better on defense, especially against the run, where they ranked 26th in the NFL last season.
.......................................................................................

Looks like this deal will be announced Wed. I am thankfull the Falcons did not give up Schaub which would have been the dumbest thing they could have done.

Getting Pro Bowl Abraham for a mid first rounder seems reasonable. Falcons defense was horrible and now they have
the makings of being able to stop the run. Milloy and Crocker will help at Safetys.

Draft day for Falcons will be waiting on the second round to begin and stocking up on offensive lineman.

did vick tutor young? did they go to the same school? did vick win the MNC? did vick ever lead the ncaa in passing efficiency? did vick lead a mack brown-led team to TWO rose bowl victories?

VY made mack brown a very very rich man. that speaks volumes to what he can do :142smilie

the fact that VY is confident in his abilities and is a proven winner gives him the upside. he's fast, elusive and fairly accurate. he needs grooming to be a good QB in the nfl. i thought McNair would be the guy to do that since they are very close.
But I'm expecting Tenny to take Leinart now and reuniting him with his old OC.

i think he's too proud to sit on his paycheck and settle for being a poor NFL QB (see Leaf, cRyan) and in the end VY fall somewhere between Aaron Brooks and Tom Brady when all is said and done. I think a lot of it will depend on who helps "tutor" him in the early years. If it's Aaron Brooks in Oakland......i'm expecting disasterous things.

I am not sold on Vince as a stud NFL QB, but the comparisons to Vick are hollow. Vick has a huge problem because by NFL standards he is a damn short QB. He has problems reading defenses because he cant see. Vince is 6'6" and doesnt have that problem. And while Vince isnt the sharpest knife in the drawer, he is a Mensa member compared to Ron Mexico.

I think like most QBs if Vince goes to the right place he thrives. The wrong place he is a complete bust. Only time will tell.
