Kevin Millwood and Russ Ortiz face off in a key game tonight. The winner goes to the NLCS. Ortiz is a good pitcher and will be pitching on 4 days rest. Kevin Millwood will be pitching on 3 days rest

Info on pitchers who start on 3 days rest in playoffs

In 23 starts, pitchers are a combined 3-13 with a 6.75 ERA. Only eight of the 23 outings were "quality starts" (at least six innings pitched with three or fewer runs allowed). They've allowed 134 hits and 90 runs in 105 1/3 innings.
NOTE: Glavine pitched on 3 days rest yesterday and got roughed up.

ORTIZ is 4-4 when starting against ATLANTA with an ERA of 4.35 and a WHIP of 1.606.
His team's record is 4-4 in these starts. The OVER is 6-2.

MILLWOOD is 4-2 when starting against SAN FRANCISCO with an ERA of 4.53 and a WHIP of 1.259.
His team's record is 4-3 in these starts. The OVER is 5-2.

Two things I wonder about 3 days rest:

1) Anyone know Millwood's stats on 3 days rest? I wouldn't even know where to find something like that.

2) Anyone notice a correlation between performances before and after 3 days rest? For instance, in 1987 Frank Viola gave the Twins 2 great performances on 3 days rest in the World Series and Jack Morris did the same in 1991. Schilling gave the Diamondbacks 2 great outings in last year's World Series on 3 days rest. What do all of those instances have in common? The pitcher pitched brilliantly in the game prior to going on 3 days rest against the same team.

Hudson and Glavine obviously got rocked on 3 days rest but the both struggled in their outing against the same opponent prior to going on 3 days rest. Mulder was great on 3 days rest and he was great in his outing prior to going on 3 days rest against the same team.

My point is that your should expect a great performance from Millwood tonight. Far, far too much has been made of the 3 days rest boogey man because people are only looking at raw stats, not the nature of each performance.

That said, I am still not convinced that Atlanta will win tonight. I also expect Ortiz to pitch well and San Francisco is almost in a must-win situation considering their recent history of postseason ineptitude. I am passing but if I were forced to make a play it would be on Atlanta. Good luck tonight.

You've got the points, Nick.

Millwood had dominating stuff in game two and was pulled early after barely breaking a sweat. I look for Millwood and Ortiz to both be on top of their games tonight and for once in the playoffs there might be an under!

I just heard on espn that Millwood only threw 72 pitches over 6 innings in that last start, so while it's true that he is pitching on three days rest, it's not like he overextended himself in his last outing.

Having said all this, i like the giants at +120.
