YTD 6-5 -1.72 Units

Late posting a bit. I like getting the line early but I wanted to talk to a few of the boys a bit to get a feel of the mood on the team. Of course with Van Allen being a big Red Sox and Bonk being the big Yankee fan the boys were all out watching the game. Took me a while to get a hold of them. Something the players would not say in the media but mentioned amongst themselves is that the Ducks could have been the team they would have played if they had beat Devils last year in the Conf. finals. So that being said, it is time for them to find out how the measure up against them.

Lalime will be in nets tonight for the Sens. Jacques but the boys through the paces pretty good Thursday. I really think the Sens come out extremely focussed and play what they like to call Senator's hockey. Senator's hockey is forecheck hard, cycle the puck, use your speed and skill and play responsibly defensively. You must be unselfish. Capitalize on the opposition's mistakes and play solid special teams. The Sens could easily score 4 or 5 goals in any game as they are so gifted skill wise. It is hard to say about the total as Lalime should come up big. The better question is will the Ducks score 2 goals because if they do then it goes over the total.

Playing:

Ott. -.5(-110);)

GLTA!

Good luck Kev...i might lay off due to the fact I gotta think Anaheim gets up for this one after a bit of a layoff...some time to work on things and aim to right the ship and get their first win. I smell a possible tie in this one and because of that, plan on laying off. That being said I will be rooting for the Sens.

Now making the Sens a 5 UNIT PLAY!( the extra 2 Unit at -107)

I was 5-2 last year on 5 Unit plays. 2-0 on 10 Unit plays.

No way they lose 3 in a row so early in the year.

Attached is an article that might help sway you a bit in terms of how the Sens will bring their game tonight.

Martin looking for one Mighty effort

By BRUCE GARRIOCH, Ottawa Sun

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. -- The locals call this Surf City, but the only wave the Senators want to ride is one that leads them to a victory. Displeased with his team's effort in a 4-3 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday, Senators coach Jacques Martin scrapped plans for an off-ice workout and put the club through a gruelling 50-minute practice a day before facing the Mighty Ducks at Arrowhead Pond.

"Nobody's happy and we shouldn't be," said Senators winger Vaclav Varada yesterday. "We didn't do anything (against the Kings). We did nothing. The power play is on fire, but there's no way we should be blowing 3-1 leads.

"If we worked in that game against L.A. the same way we did in practice (yesterday), then we would have smoked them. I have no idea what's gone wrong. We made it way too easy for them. We have to get back to working hard because we can't accomplish (anything) if we're not working hard."

That's no joke. The Senators came out to California a day early to get accustomed to the three-hour time difference, enjoy the climate and make sure they were prepared for a tough challenge from the Kings.

But with a brutal effort, Martin decided to do some line-juggling.

Varada skated at practice with Radek Bonk and Marian Hossa, Peter Schastlivy, Todd White and Daniel Alfredsson were the second unit, while Peter Schaefer played with Jason Spezza and Martin Havlat.

The fourth line had Bryan Smolinski centring Shaun Van Allen and Chris Neil.

Since winger Martin Havlat indicated to Martin he isn't quite ready to return to the lineup, there won't be any changes for tonight with the possible exception of veteran Curtis Leschyshyn replacing Brian Pothier.

Pothier wasn't the worst defencemen on Wednesday night, but it would appear Martin is trying to shake things up a little bit.

"Everybody says there's still (79) games left to play, but these are the points you're going to look back on in April and realize that you let them go," said Leschyshyn. "You can't have that happen. You need to get the job done."

What's really bothering Martin is the club's penalty-killing units. The Senators gave up three power-play goals in only one game last season, while in the last two games (including a 3-2 loss to Detroit on Saturday), they've allowed six.

"Penalty killing is a reflection of your overall game," said Martin. "It's a matter of getting back to working hard. It's almost like we were expecting to have an easy game and you've got remember you're not going to have easy games.

"You win games by working hard and paying attention to detail. You've got to win the battles for the loose pucks.

"When you cheat too much, you get away from your game and we've been trying to take the easy way out. That's what I find disappointing.

"We have to be better."

Senators swear they will get back on track

By Bruce GARRIOCH, Ottawa Sun

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. -- There was a tense moment at Senators' practice yesterday at the Arrowhead Pond when defenceman Curtis Leschyshyn screamed at nobody in particular to "Stop (bleepin') cheating." While the classy assistant captain didn't point any fingers at the end of the 50-minute workout, it appeared Zdeno Chara might have been the target of the cuss after coming up short in a skating drill that Leschyshyn's group was forced to do twice.

"I was just kind of yelling at nobody in particular," said Leschyshyn. "I just felt something needed to be said."

The Senators are supposed to be a Stanley Cup contenders this season, but it was hard to tell which team was playoff bound the way Ottawa performed in a 4-3 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday at the Staples Center.

Picked by pre-season publications such as The Hockey News, The Sporting News, ESPN Magazine and Sports Illustrated to win the Cup, the Senators haven't given their fans much to get excited about in the early going.

BELIEVE PRESS CLIPPINGS

Perhaps the Senators have been reading too many of their press clippings and they don't feel they need to bring the same kind of work ethic to the rink, but the ugly loss to the Kings should have some effect.

Let's face it, if somebody tells you that you've got the strongest team in the league enough times, sooner or later you're going to start believing it. Those thoughts appear to have slipped into the Ottawa dressing room.

"What you have to learn from something like this is that you just can't show up and rely on your talent to win a hockey game," said Leschyshyn. "You still have to work hard to have success and we have to get back to that.

"Everybody has picked us (to win the Stanley Cup) and that's definitely where we want to be. People say that and you can start to believe what you read. But to get there, you have to do the things it takes to get you there. We know we've got a good hockey team and we should be better."

The Senators had better hope so. People get tired of coach Jacques Martin sending a message about hard work, but it's what has gotten this club to the point of being a contender and it has to return in order for Ottawa to have success.

The Kings had a simple game plan since they couldn't match the Senators' talent or speed. They went out and beat the Senators to every loose puck and won nearly every 1-on-1 battle.

"With all the injuries we've had, the only way we were going to beat this team was to outwork it," Kings coach Andy Murray said following the game. "We made some mistakes on the penalty kill, but in the second period we started to play the way we needed to play."

And they beat the Senators at their own game.

Yes, it's only three games into the season, but this trend has to be nipped in the bud or it could prove to be costly down the road for Ottawa.

Nobody would blame Martin if he decided to put half of the team in the press box tonight against Anaheim. Since that's not possible, everybody has to get back on track quickly to make this road trip a success.

BETTER NOW THAN LATER

"We've got two games left here (against Anaheim and tomorrow in San Jose) to recover. Hopefully, we can win these two games to get us back on track," said winger Vaclav Varada.

The plan is for the Senators to play into late June this year. That goal hasn't changed, but if things don't turn around it might have to be altered or GM John Muckler could have to step in to make personnel changes.

While confidence can breed success, in the Senators' case, it's almost like they've gotten too cocky and don't feel that they have to have work ethic to win games.

"Maybe it was a good wake-up call to have that happen this early," said Senators winger Marian Hossa.

Ottawa fans can only hope Hossa is right.

:toast: :drinky: :weed: :142hump: :chairshot :grouphug:

u mention sens dont lose 3 in a row, but what aboot

Anaheim is 0-3 for only the second time ever -- 1998-99 being the other -- and the club has never fallen in its first four games of the season.

rather play sens ML, i hate road chalk, but no ties lose.

can always get the juice back on your next 10 unit play on sens over flyers. :D

no play on the total, under 6 - 3 - 1 L10, 3 - 2 at the pond.

tough takin the dogg

Dallas went 2-0 against Washington last season and is 5-1-1 in the last seven meetings. The Caps have lost in six of their last seven trips to Big D.

catch ya later

GO SENS GO !!!

Thanks ks, either we will all be winners or you will be the only winner tonight!

Ace - Good stuff on the total but I am staying away from it. As for the ML, I thought about it but I feel very strongly that they win so I thought the -.5 had better value. As for the Ducks, they look awful and are having a bit of that Stanley Cup hangover, you think?

Anthony - There are two reason now that I better win with this play tonight, one I would win 5 Units and two I would not have to deal with the 500 pound woman.

I will be on MSN for sure tonight. Later.

Good luck on your play, everything I hear in Ottawa has them going through a hard skate and being very focused on this game.

I think they will play a more disaplined game and will get their coach his 300th win tonight (is it 300 or something like this)

GOOD LUCK
