I saw it and it was great.....The one thing that kills me about basketball back then was no shot clock. I mean you can hold the ball for a s long as you want??? In one scene of that the oppsoing team, which I think was Wake Forrest in the ACC tournament held the ball for 3 and half minutes. How fricken boring would that have been. Although they somehow each scored over 70 points.....They can barley do that now and they have to shoot more frequent.

The irony of it all is that back then there was no shot clock, and the kids could shoot! Today there is a shot clock, forcing lots of shots and lots of possessions, and shooters are a premium...

I do have mixed opinions about Valvano. I also wonder exactly what really goes on at all places, etc.

The "30 for 30" was really good. Living in the area, not only do I remember watching it all as a young kid, but I've heard so much about it for so many years. Even so, it was still so very interesting to watch.

A couple notes. The ACC had both a 3-pt line and a 30-second shot clock that year. Funny thing about the shot clock...it turned off with 4 minutes to play. That's why you saw a team hold it for 3 1/2 minutes.

It was so experimental. The 3-pt line was ridiculously short (17' 9" I believe) and the shot clock was turned off when it mattered most.

Even today though....you can't tell me 35-seconds isn't ridiculously long. Some games it never comes into play until late in games when a team just holds it and forces several late game fouls.

I think it was slightly better then, b/c you had a chance to play tough D and get the ball. Back then you had to dribble. Today (and for the last 20+ years) a PF can easily keep possession of the ball b/c your allowed to carry it, etc.

Just put it at 24-seconds and reward defense and possessions rather than start fouling with several minutes to play...

Valvano was a good coach. NC State beating UH in the 1983 NC game was luck. UH would have beaten them nine straight times if they played 10 games, but they didn't, and NC State was the better team that night. Cinderella found her slipper and Valvano gained lots of attention from that win. The talent on that Houston team was sick!

I was so young then and looking back, I don't know how they beat Houston. State was up by 8 at halftime too.

A couple very questionable calls on Drexler hurt Houston but even then, its amazing State was even close with that team.

I've joked with friends how State just fouled their way to the title while they joke with me about UNC 4-Corners.

Its just amazing how many free throws got missed down the stretches of so many games....and if even one of them gets made....season over.

Just an incredible run. The other weird thing about it all was that NC State was a pretty good team. The injury to Whittenburg made them end up a bubble team where they'd have easily been in had he played all year.

Yet they struggle with Pepperdine and others in the tournament to the point that they need, for example, 3 misses on the front end of 1-and-1's. A terrible rule but still....3 straight misses from an 84% shooter. Unreal.
