Personal beliefs are just that. Why some feel the need to belittle others for their beliefs is beyond me. If someone shows up at your door screaming you're going to hell, then do what I would and turn the dog loose on them, but to take the pompous approach some of you do makes you no better than those you condem.

Exactly. Does anyone really know for sure? Why call people stupid because they don't agree with your own beliefs. I'm not a big church goer or anything like that, but I try to live my life with something my dad told me. He said, I don't know for sure if there is a God, but it makes it easier to live your life believing.

Sound advice from your father Zig.

I have had my share of negative experiences in church related functions, which I won't go into.

My tours of combat and experiences with that skewed my views of releigion.

The phrase "There is no such thing as an Atheist in a foxhole" isn't 100% true because Jesus wan't in the foxhole with an M-16. It was a nightmare for me and the ones that I lost.

My brothers kids ask me why I don't go to church?

I don't crap on them and their beliefs. They are too young to know the reasons why. I try to attend their special functions, but I can hardly make it 15 mins.

I try to make it to Christmas and Easter for my Mom, and it's the same thing, but again I don't unload on my family, like some people, about religion, I just go outside and smoke. Cigs.. Hedge... :SIB

I do enjoy listening to how people who do not believe in God, get sooooooo caught up shouting that there isn't a God. As if, they are, in fact, trying to convince themselves, not the people they are shouting at.

Wow! When I am right - I am right :0074

People in this forum shout about a lot of things. Sports, movies, music, politics. Religion isn't (shouldn't be?) any different.

I think a post every few weeks or so about how 40% of Americans believe something about the Earth that 99.9% of scientists and true experts on the topic don't believe, is warranted.

Granted this should have been in the politics and religion forum from the beginning. AND since religion is a very personal thing it needs to be treated with kid-gloves. Other than that, I think we would be foolish as a society for NOT talking about such things.

That being said, I doubt anyone is going to change their minds about this topic. You are either in one camp or the other, and a website post isn't likely to change that.

Merry Christmas? heh

If someone tells me that the Lions are the best team in the NFL, should I just chalk it up as her personal belief and move on? No, I'd tell her she's out of her mind. Believing in something that has zero proof is going to be challenged by the non-believers. Quit complaining about it, grab your faith crutch and deal with it. It's not that big of a deal.....unless, of course, deep down you don't really believe it yourself and it makes you feel guilt when you get reminded of it.

To me, it is all about living, and letting live. While I am not one to believe in deities, there are reasons that religion appears useful. At the top of the list, imo, is the manner in which it consoles grieving families.

Tomorrow I will attend the funeral of a wonderful man whom I have known for 20 years. He is the father of 2 of my close friends, and I assure you he is just a peach of a man. He retired 2 months ago in his early 60's as a local bank prez in what appeared to be perfect health. He suffered a stroke a few days later, which led to the discovery of fast-growth brain tumor. He died yesterday.

Are any of you hard-edged guys going to piss in the face of his family by telling them there is no god, or would you rather see them take solace in the "fact" that their beloved husband, father and grandfather is in a better place?

Were these folks militant religious yahoos, then I'd say fuck 'em, but to bash good peaceful god-fearing folks, or to label them as inferior intellectually just makes absolutely no sense to me.

Why not just let people who are not affecting you adversely live their lives as they see fit?

Under a mask.
When did I ever say that I am tolerant? Never. I don't tolerate fools, especially the ones who believe that God, guns and gold will be their salvation.

What I DID say is that Christianity, Judiasm and Islam breed violence, war, murder, torture, genocide, ignorance and many other evils. Always have, always will, because they believe THEIR particular God condones or commands it.

Atheists don't have that problem.

Now what's YOUR problem?

Duff,
Read this quote from Jesus. If you don't understand,I will gladly explain.Peace.

Matthew 10:32-39 (New International Version, ?2010)

32 ?Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. 33 But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.

34 ?Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn

??a man against his father,
a daughter against her mother,
a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law?
36 a man?s enemies will be the members of his own household.?[a]

37 ?Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.

Footnotes:

1. Matthew 10:36 Micah 7:6

Well if someone is trying to convince you then yeah I would say pull out all the stops to make your case. Inserting your opinion and tearing others down every chance you get just to prove your "intellectual dominance" is totally different and is the point I was making. I find it odd that you feel the need to be belief police, but hey man if thats your thing then go for it:0074 BTW dont waste your religion jabs on me as your beliefs would never have any bearing on mine.

Thanks for providing quotes that exemplify the kind of religious dogma that turns so many away from organized religion, Rusty.

Well done. :0074
