I don't think the reason most people want to make money is to make them happy. The reason people want to accumulate money is so that they have choices in their life.

Why go to college? Why save money? Why sacrifice for the future?

It is all about taking control and having control over your own life so you can choose to give you kids more than you had, you can retire in comfort, you can buy a bigger car or better house but, in all cases you have a choice.

People in poverty don't choose to be poor but, the choices they do make keeps them in poverty. That is to say, their choices, lifestyle, life chocies limits their ability to control their own life.

It then becomes very attractive to turn over control and choices to someione else and "be taken care of." With more than 50% of Americans, that is the government. (although I am grouping welfare and SSN/Medicare together in that 50% number)

Here's an example of turning that around.

Let's give every girl living in poverty between 16 and 22 $2,500 cash a year (or a college stipend of $5,000) if they simply do not have a child in that year.

If that delays births in only 25% of those girls, think of the ROI plus all of those girls now have a wide range of choices that they don't have with a baby or two in tow and a baby's daddy or four chasing them around.

Of course, Republicans won't support this logic because of the dollars spent plus some baby may not be born (another plus) and Democrats will cry out about the impact on poor people which is the point. They would rather have poor people stay poor and dependent on that party to give them more stuff.

Building wealth is all about living independently, enjoying freedom and building a comfortable life for yourself regardless of how you define it.

Another good post... Its all about choices. Sure some of the rich assholes have too much power but god damnit this is america. If you want to be one of those rich assholes you can be. You just have to lace up your boot straps and work hard for you piece of the pie. Our current president is a perfect example of this.

How much is enough? I want to be rich too. I do not hold that feeling against anyone but how much is enough? Why are the CEO's getting so much.

I think CEO's of Public corporations are OVERPAID, I think they've corrupted the compensation committees, the i'll take care of you, if you take care of me situation. The employees and the shareholders of the companies are the ones getting a screw job.

Some great comments on both "sides" of the argument here. The fact that we have two sides of the argument is part of the problem, of course. What concerns me the most of late is the ability of the uber-rich to have a huge impact on the direction of the country with no worry or recourse after the Citizens United ruling. Allowing more money than we already had - MUCH more money - into the election process that cannot be traced is a disaster for the country, in my opinion. The uber-wealthy are getting wealthier, and they will have even more control and ability to control even more of the wealth and legislation in the country.

This one thing is a big problem for me. I am not saying that only one side of the fence benefits from this, but the uber-wealthy certainly do. And they controlled more than enough already, IMO. How can this possibly be a positive thing overall for a truly democratic country? When there is a great disparity of income, we will always have a problem. We have to get creative in ways that will affect real change in the country. I actually like Bob's idea about the $2500 stipend for NOT having children for a year. I like the age number given - a limited time, when people have real choices to make. Things like this are creative and break the mold. Maybe it wouldn't work, but I like trying something. How about paying unemployed people to watch other people's kids while they are working in low-income areas? They would have to be taught or pass a class or some such thing, but give working mothers and fathers a chance to make some real money without paying child care. Things like that. Make unemployed people do community service of some kind in exchange for receiving their benefits. Even if it's just a couple of hours a week, whatever. FORCE change in all areas - but make that change positive and cause responsibility.

Just rambling here - I just think it's time that EVERYBODY assumes some responsibility for changing things. Make each person somehow responsible for the ongoing cost of our wars. Dedicate time and/or effort while we are at war. Enact a war tax of some kind, so people actually FEEL and sacrifice somehow while we are at war. Make everyone be a part of all these efforts, and share in what is going on.

Again - just rambling. I think we need more rambling and brainstorming and less bullshit posturing and blaming.

Yes, I've been drinking a bit today. Worried about my kids and grandkids futures after spending a great week with them. Again - some positive contributions in this thread. More of this at higher levels would help a lot.

BTW...what percent of all US taxes are paid by the one-percenters? We know that about 42% of Americans pay no income tax. Guess who is supporting those "99 percenters" with their tax dollars and their charitable dollars?

Azbob. What you know perfectly well is that low income folks often, in fact usually, pay a larger percentage of their income in taxes than do the rich. They pay sales taxes, gasoline taxes, alcohol taxes, cigarette taxes, local and state taxes, property taxes, use taxes and many other taxes at a greater percentage of their income than the rich do.

Mitt Romney pays 14%. The guy who disposes of your garbage likely pays more.

You're not stupid, azbob, so you already know that.

Dummies like skul, ray and hedge are too stupid to understand, but you're not.

So, why, azbob, do you act like an ignorant asshole?

I know you're not ignorant.

Could it be that you are simply an asshole?

Well, we were able to have 9 or 10 coherent, respectful and insightful posts in a row and then 2pm rolled around and Duff's stepmother called down to the basement and told him it was time to get up because Thursday is shower day.

You have my support Duff, taxes should be lowered for poor people and rich people.

If you have a viewpoint that all rich people are evil so be it. I just know that if we want to help people in need, the way to do that is NOT to give money to the government and hope it goes to the right place. Just give it directly to local agenices, churches, hospitals, YMCA's that you know 80-100% will go to the local community.

How do you lower tax for the rich people explain that that things fell apart after the Bush Tax Cuts?

And to your argument that lowering taxes for the wealthy creates jobs. No, it did not create jobs.

No doubt. We were having a perfectly good discussion in here until you come in once again shitting all over anyone with a different opinion than yours. Duff why are you such a miserable asshole?
