Nobody mentioned three of my favorites

1) Salvador....James Woods is fantastic and this is one of the most emotional, gut wrenching, roller coaster rides of a drama that I have ever seen.

2) The Right Stuff...Beautifully made film about true heros.

3) Field of Dreams....Never get tired of this movie once he goes to Boston and meets James Earl Jones.

4) Casablanca...Of all the gin joints in all the world, she had to walk into mine.

5) When they were Kings.......Ali/Foreman. Remarkable film

Honorable mention:

1) Raging Bull - Deniro at his best
2) Born on the 4th of July - For some reason this movie can almost bring me to tears
3) Eating Raoul - Funny ass movie
4) American Beauty - Guess I can relate to Kevin Spacey's character
5) Tommy Boy - Farley kills me

Side note - Read a book about Saturday Night Live and Farley use to drop his drawers and take shits out of the 17th story window of the NBC building onto unsuspecting pedrestians. May he rest in peace.

Man, I could go on and on. The scenes aren't necessarily the guts of the movie as much as the characters are, though.

I do like the flashbacks. dude's strut with "I just checked in..."

I just love some of the throwaway lines (these aren't really funny out of context)
"What did Mr. Lebowski tell you?"
"He said I could just take any rug in the house."

"I'll go find a cash machine."

"Oh, you mean coitus?"

"Well, the dude abides."

The opening monologue is classic as the camera follows the tumbleweed to LA. "Of course, Dude, isn't a name one self-applies where I come from."

One thing I love is how all the characters have pasts. You learn about Dude's college days ("I was the author of the original draft, not the watered down version they realeased to the media"), Walter in Nam, Walter's marriage, Bunny's past, Turturro's past. Just goes to show how well thought out the whole thing is.

I like how the stranger shows up at the beginning, the scene in the middle, and then again at the end, really ties the film together.

Here's a small detail I like. Check it out next time. Dude and the house boy (a very funny character) are having a conversation and right at the end of the conversation, dude takes a drag on his smoke and says, "the carpet pissers did this?"
Then he blows smoke out of his nostrils looking very "bull like" right as matador music starts playing. Cut to John Turturro at the bowling alley in his silk matador stockings. Beautiful.

there are just so many great details in it (the scratch pad, the 2x4 nailed to the floor is a very dude-like way, tai chi with the white-russian -- everything is always in character.)

Like I said, I could go on and on...

How bout the cop "they got us working in shifts. Leads?"

I know. Funny how critics who usually love the Coen Brothers didn't warm up to it. It might be a mess, but it is a wonderfully cultivated and hilarious mess. A favorite scene of mine is when the two guys are forcing The Dude to look in his toilet. "Find it yet Lebowski?" "No, I need to take another look". Splash! Lmao! The scene of the ashes blowing back into their faces is great also. :D

thing is, Lebowski seems like a mess at first, but really requires more than one viewing (or 50).

characters with more than bit parts...
dude, walter, danny, lebowski, house boy, bunny, the artist lady, the nihilists, karl hunugs, the porn producer, the landlord, Jesus, the stranger. every one of them has at least 2 or 3 scenes.

then, throw in the indian bowler, the waitress, the other detective, funeral director, the high school kid, the lady's doctor, the two cops (funny scene...), the artists ladys friend.

its chaos, but it really all does hold together.

the dude is just a classic classic character.

Shamrock -- seen "once upon...america". liked it but not as much as leone's other stuff. great cast, but it was almost too ambitious. didn't hold me like "once upon...west", but I did like it.
