just received this e-mail...thought that some might find it interesting....

Sometimes we just are so busy that we overlook things of importance.
If not for the bravery of the Allied Forces 63 years ago today the course of world history would have taken a far different path than it has taken.

Might be a good idea to take a moment to say a little prayer for, thank them and reflect on the price paid by those 63 years ago so you and I can freely exchange messages like this.

Here are a few things that you may want to take a look at.

A detailed account of the invasion can be found at http://www.militaryhistoryonline.com/wwii/dday/

Here is a short to the point version.

World War II: D-Day, The Invasion of Normandy

Order of the Day June 6, 1944
General Eisenhower's determination that operation OVERLORD (the invasion of France) would bring a quick end to the war is obvious in this message to the troops of the Allied Expeditionary Forces on June 6, 1944, the morning of the invasion.

The D-Day operation of June 6, 1944 brought together the land, air and sea forces of the allied armies in what became known as the largest invasion force in human history. The operation, given the codename OVERLORD, delivered five naval assault divisions to the beaches of Normandy, France. The beaches were given the codenames UTAH, OMAHA, GOLD, JUNO and SWORD. The invasion force included 7,000 ships and landing craft manned by over 195,000 naval personnel from eight allied countries. Almost 133,000 troops from England, Canada and the United States landed on D-Day. Casualties from the three countries during the landing numbered 10,300. By June 30th, over 850,000 men, 148,000 vehicles, and 570,000 tons of supplies had landed on the Normandy shores. Fighting by the brave soldiers, sailors and airmen of the allied forces western front and Russian forces on the eastern front led to the defeat of German Nazi forces. On May 7, 1945, German General Alfred Jodl signed an unconditional surrender at Reims, France.

i wonder if the allies have the fortitude today to take on a struggle simialr to what happened during ww2....hopefully we will not have to find out...

Great post.

Very easy for us to forget things like this in our everyday life. It is good to be reminded that there are many out there that take care of us and allow us to do what it is we do every day.

great post Al, most important one of the Day. I'm not so sure today s people have the same fortitude you speak of. I watch a ton of history channel & study wwII, I truly believe those men were a different grade than today, I honestly believe they were the "greatest generation" as Brokaw says. Both fronts, Normandy & Pacific, those men were without doubt something special. Life goes on, and people forget, but literally EVERYTHING we have and enjoy is a direct result of their sacrifice.

Its incredible to me, how much just a mere 60 years has made people forget. I guess forget isn't the word I'm looking for, more like take for granted.

Anyway great thread, hope your well.

My Dad was there on day 2. And we need to Remember. And of course the island invading in Pacific to kick Japan in the pants.
We have to hope in future these giant steps are not needed. Some how this world needs to find away to think more about peace then war.

Sad to think how many people can write today's date without reflecting on its significance.

Borrowing from last year's thread:

d_day_01_klein.jpg

D-Day Order
~ Dwight Eisenhower

Audio: http://www.eisenhower.archives.gov/dl/dday/orderofthedayaudio.html

Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Forces: You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely.

But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to Victory!

I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full victory!

Good Luck! And let us all beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.

This day in history . . . June 6, 1944.

Great posts and should be taught in every school in this country, unfortunately it doesn't and that is very very sad.

God Bless all those that have given their lives for our freedom.

Saw special on this (War Stories) over weekend--with lots of footage of actual event.

Was very good and mind boggeling what was all involved in landing and how they managed to keep it a secret--aided by unexpected change of weather.

Was quite inspirational when they showed somewhere in U.S. (maybe times square) huge ticker tape that we had landed successfully and thousands of people cheering as it scrolled on bldg.
