Last thur a local bar about a block from my house has its annual bus trip to Saratoga...I have never gone but many of my friends make their annual trip drinking and playing the horses...about 45 people take the 2 hour bus trip....so I went...don't play the ponies very much except the k-Derby,Preakness and Belmont....so I put on my handicapping hat,got a copy of the NY Post and Daily News and hopped on the bus....arrived 2 hours and 15 minutes door to door...great timing...
Saratoga track is beautiful...almost like going back in time..
1st race...like Cubit the favorite....found out about 5 minutes to post time its a 2 mile steeple chase....horses jumping over fences and water....never heard of that..they go around the track twice...on the 1st jump Cubit stumbles and is in last place...horse didn't even go 1/10 of a mile and I'm out of the race already..never knew they have steeple races...wtf....lost the race and the 2nd race double....
2nd race....I like Con Gee and it goes off at 5-1... I'm down by the finish line outside...Con Gee is kicking ass and crosses the finish line ahead of everyone...I jump for joy..only problem is I'm not at the finish line...the pole I'm even with it is about 50 yds short of the finish line..with no angle to see i have to listen to the PA announcer..."Blythily,Con Gee and Comet at the finish line"....damn...I already celebrated...but I hear the announcer say Con Gee wins..wow...what a downer if I lost that race.
3rd Race...4 horses in this one...couple of horses scr. I play a pic 3 and lose...
4th race... put $20 down on a long shot Indian Starlight...comes in 3rd and pays $10.50 to show..of course I have it to win...
5th-love Marvin Miracle ....morning line is 5-1...put $20 to win....capping this race..every horse in this race except one has earned no money...Marvin has won $14,000 and another horse $2000..the rest have $0000's...Marvin wins but the odds drop about minute before the race starts.. it wins and pays $6.70..can't be greedy...
6th and 7th races.... like "Yo Blue" but "Yo Sucks" and Rocco jr. is riding Majestic ..he comes in 3rd..Rocce rode Con Gee so I feel something for him...
8th race...like Gailiano...watched him cross the path before he went to the paddock...he was the best looking horse..the kid who puts up the chains so the horses can go down the path agrees with me that Gailana is the best looking...so put $10 to win...he wins and pays $17..wow..doing pretty good and up with 2 races left..
9th race Love Palace Dream..heavy favorite..going off at 2-5 or 4-5...I'm listening to the NYRA TV show predicting the outcome...in between the 6th-7th race we had a huge down pour. heavy rains and the track was muddy already...small delay...heard the announcer say this is not good for Palace...middle class horses get an advantage with the mud and Palace is at a disadvantage...there are a few horses going off at 6-1,7-1,etc..I put $20 to win Frosty Bay...he kicks ass and pays $16.80 to win....damn...
10 Race.....looking at the horses trying to capp...last race of the day, dropping in class,etc...see that Melody Lin in its last 3 starts came in 1st,3rd and 9th...damn...139 is my house number and I play 139 combo in NY lottery every freak'in day for the past 30 years....I'm way up for the day so I put $30 to win on Melody...
Race starts and Melody is the 6 and is 2nd to last place at 3/4'..watching the screen 2-9-4,9-4-5-3,4-8-2...where is the 6 horse...then the pack gets all bunched and out of no where my 6 is coming on strong...passes the pack and wins and pays $13.20...add another $198 dollars to my winnings....
We get everyone back on the bus and of course I'm happy as ever...word is out Box won some big bucks..some of my friends are saying..damn..he handicapps football and basketball...and the horses..next year give us some tips.
..thank god for listening to the TV broadcast,looking at the prettiest horse and having a house number of 139.....
Walk into my house..my wife and daughter asked how did i do....told them I broke even but had a lot of fun...:00hour
