Mark Loretta started at first base and had three hits. Sexson is considered questionable for the games this weekend.

Phillies bullpen woes:

Bowa considers shaking up roles in woeful bullpen
By Bob Brookover
Inquirer Staff Writer
NEW YORK - Larry Bowa still had the bullpen on his mind yesterday when he arrived at Shea Stadium.
After watching two of his relievers turn a tie game into a lopsided Phillies loss against the New York Mets, the manager admitted that he "doesn't have a setup man" and that he was prepared to give righthander David Coggin and lefthander Hector Mercado more of an opportunity late in games.
"You'd like the role to be defined," Bowa said. "But the only [relief] roles defined right now are [Dan] Plesac against tough lefthanders and [Jose] Mesa to close."
Part of the problem the Phillies have encountered in the bullpen is that two of the veterans they were counting on are out for the season and another was recently demoted to triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Turk Wendell never threw a pitch for the Phillies this season and hopes to be ready next year after undergoing elbow surgery. Ricky Bottalico's season ended last month when it was determined he needed shoulder surgery. Jose Santiago was designated for assignment Sunday after going 1-3 with a 7.15 earned run average.
Though Wendell has never pitched well since slipping on a Phillies uniform, Bottalico, Santiago and Rheal Cormier were part of a much improved bullpen last season. Cormier has also struggled this season - he's 4-5 with a 6.00 ERA - and was on the mound at the beginning of the eighth inning Thursday night when the Mets scored eight runs on eight hits.
It should also be noted that closer Mesa, despite a 3.07 ERA, has not been nearly as effective this season as he was a year ago. His five blown saves are one more than he had a year ago, and tied for the third most in the National League. He had some more problems last night during the Phillies' 9-8 win over the Mets.
With Wendell and Bottalico out and Santiago and Cormier ineffective, Bowa has thrust rookie righthander Carlos Silva into the role of setup man. Silva did well in less significant roles earlier this season, but pitching in close games late, he has struggled. He has a 22.85 ERA in his last five outings.
Bowa said the Phillies have not ruled out the idea of eventually returning Silva to the starting rotation. He won 15 games as a starter last year at double-A Reading.
Though Bowa said he is ready to give Coggin a crack at trying to protect leads late in the game, he admitted he has his reservations about that, too.
"If you just went on stuff, he could do it," Bowa said. "But the other thing you have to look at are the walks and strikeouts and, for him, they are almost even."
Going into last night, Coggin had walked 35 and struck out 39 in 481/3 innings.
Coggin came on to face Mike Piazza last night with the bases loaded and two outs and surrendered a two-run single. That was the only batter he faced.
He was preceded by Mercado, who threw a wild pitch and issued a walk before registering a pair of strikeouts against Roberto Alomar and Timo Perez.
Overall, the Phillies' bullpen has a league-leading 19 losses and a 5.11 ERA that is second-worst in the league.
That's why for the second time in three years the Phillies will probably spend this off-season giving the bullpen a makeover. Bowa said he has already discussed the bullpen with general manager Ed Wade.
"We want to build it from the back up," Bowa said. "These days, you count on your pitchers to go six innings and you need two guys you can rely on in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings and you need a specialty guy. If you think about it, you win games early and keep the leads late."
Extra bases. In an effort to get more offense, Bowa filled out a lineup card last night that placed Bobby Abreu in center field, Jeremy Giambi in right field and Travis Lee at first base. Lee batted second for the first time this season, making it the 53d different lineup used by Bowa in 88 games this season.

The Reds acquired outfielder Gerald Williams and signed him to a Triple-A contract.
Shortstop Miguel Tejada was hit just above his left elbow by a pitch from Orioles closer Jorge Julio in the ninth and said after the game it was quite sore. Tejada said he may skip batting practice today but thinks he'll be ready to play. Tejada has played in 360 consecutive games. ... First baseman Scott Hatteberg is in an 0-for-17 slump and is looking for his first hit in July. He hasn't had a hit since June 30 against the Giants. ... Right fielder Jermaine Dye was 0-for-3 and is now 5-for-47 in his past 13 games
