The first issue of PLAYBOY appeared in December 1953 but was undated, so that it could remain in newsstands as long as it took to sell out. Publisher Hugh Hefner bought a calendar photo of Marilyn Monroe cheaply. It was too hot to handle at the time. Hugh was a man of vision. The pose is tame by today's standards. Marilyn was "Sweetheart of the Month". In the next issue, the centerfold became "Playmate of the Month", and that has continued to the present. The January 2004 issue is called the "50th Anniversary Issue", because the January 1954 issue was the first dated one. I think Marilyn was older than 17 in the photo. Hef was arrested when it was learned that Miss January 1958 Elizabeth Ann Roberts was 17 when she posed. Marilyn was born in 1926 (like Hef), so she was 22 or 23, at least, in the photo. My oldest PLAYBOY is the August 1956 issue that has an insert of Anita Ekberg nude pix. The last I heard, the first ish of PLAYBOY was worth several thousand dollars in good condition. There are books that tell how much it is worth in various conditions. Look at Borders Books for current ones.
