Re: a horrible day in baltimore...johnny u passed away today

I heard about it over dinner. Totally ruined my appetite. If you're a Johnny U fan or an old Baltimore Colts fan, read a book called "When the Colts belonged to Baltimore". I have it here on my desk and have read it a few times.

One of the best 2-minute warning QBs to ever play the game.
RIP Johnny. :(

I'm a die hard Giant fan & to this day I can't bear watching the film of that 1958 NFL World Championship Game.As KotsDad stated Johnny U was one of the greatest 2 min.QB of all time.i just read on CNN/SI that when he retired he held about 20 passing records. He was the first QB to reach 40,000 passing yds.He still holcs a record of throwing at least 1 TD pas in 47 straight games. On the 50th anniversary of the NFL he was voted the greatest QB of all time.I tend to agree with that.He totally controlled his offensive unit on the field. We knew who the boss was.

Rest in peace.......Johnny U

the old colts and giants laid the groundwork for what the nfl is today....i believe this funeral in baltimore will rival the funeral of any head of state.....he was on a treadmill doing some rehab when he collapsed....god bless johnny u...we`ll miss you.

saw Johnny U play as kid in person

saw Johnny U play as kid in person

in cotton bowl, I used to be him in backyard with bothers and neighborhood gang--QBing drives as middle-man... I would wear black CT hi-tops sometimes, never felt his style hokey, they were just him ...

My fave #19 tale is one i tell my teams every so often ...

avg. College career, he was drafted and cut by Steelers, then went to Bloomfield Rams in minor league football ... a fan wrote Colt coach Weeb Ewbank that their Bloomfield QB was top notch, Weeb took a flier and invited Johnny to camp ...

Johnny U trots on field for early game in rookie year and Gifford looks and him and said, "the guy had rubber bands holding down his oversized uniform sleeves, he was that skinny, we just all laughed at him, but not for long" ....

two years later, Unitas hands off to Ameche and the NFL explodes into a new era of TV money

one of my favorite games came the day Johnny U. and Joe Willie squared off late in Johnny's career... to be honest, I cant recall who even won (which as I type here makes me smile b/c it once again proves it's people we remember, not always the results), but i believe they set the NFL record at the time for most combined passing yards ...

When I was maybe 11, watching a Colt game on TV, I saw this sign in the stands of Baltimore's Memorial Stadium, reading, "Fly the friendly skies of Unitas."

all these years later, I still recall that sign, his magnificent presence, his old school grit and class .... The guy looked like he couldnt play a lick, but named best QB in NFL's first 50 years, I would say is proof he could

a sad day, for sure ...

this last summer I bought his 1957 rookie football card for a song... boy, I'm glad I did

god bless you, Johnny U

you made me happy as a kid, you played the game the way I wish all kids and pros did in every sport today

peace to you,
gregg

Not to be disrespectful, but there's a simpson's episode where abe sees Johhny U on TV after seeing Joe Namath, and says, "Now there's a haircut you can set your watch to."

Anway, it doesn't take too long living in B-More to figure out Johhny U's place in this city. He was always just another "old time great" to me before I moved here, but for this town, it's him and Ripken. Two giants in their games and beyond.

It's kind of strange to have an old great team like the Colts "haunting" the town, especially with the new kids in town. Do people in NYC still think about the Giants and Dodgers as being from New York?

Art Donovan and Tom Matte are still public figures, so there's still that link, but with Unitas passing, the hold on the Colts as part of this town is definitely slipping.

I always liked Johnny U. He wasn't as colorful as Donovan, but I think he was impressed with the speed and size of the NFL today. Whereas Donovan has always been one of these "these kids today couldn't hold our jockstraps" kind of guys, "U" was down on the sidelines a lot, and I think he really liked watching the game. I think Unitas realized he might not have wanted a Warren Sapp chasing down his ass on a regular basis.

He'll be missed in this town.
