I cannot recall ever starting a thread in the General Discussion area, but felt that this article was worth the bother. I realize most people outside of Southeast LA feel New Orleans is a dump, but for some of us is it is "our" dump. I, for one, will not leave this place unless forced to by unforeseen circumstances.

Fellow MJer, New Orleans resident and long time friend of mine, LA Burns, sent me this link this morning. I enjoyed this simple read and felt that maybe some of you might as well.

i have been to n.o. a few times & eventhough i kept getting hassled by people begging for handouts ( sometimes even in front of cops), i always enjoyed myself. i really would like to see this place get back on it's feet & even be nicer than before.

I heard (off NPR I think) that NO's murder rate continues upward. More than one a day with fewer and fewer people actually living there. Didn't come across that in the article. That'd be a good enough reason to take the family else were. there's also the fact that the next storm can't be that far off.

Good article. New Orleans is one of my favorite cities in the U.S. - I went to JazzFest for years...but haven't been there since Katrina. One of my fondest memories is sitting on the water and having an old man play "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" and other O. Redding songs for us on his old beat-up guitar.

I have close friends who were from NO who have since moved away, but I know they miss it a lot. There is a true cultural experience in NO that I have never been able to find in any other American city. Best to you all who have stayed through the disaster...

I have been to NYC many times - you'll be hard-pressed to find an American city I haven't been to... have been in Harlem too, and it is quite cultural, but still doesn't compare to the streets of NO and the musical rooty culture that permeates everything there. There were places I went in NO that made me feel like I was back in Africa...and I am not saying that in a negative way at all - it is very vibrant. It is just really different than any other American city, in my most humble opinion.

i agree with you about n.o...

i haven't been to harlem in many years...but i once went bar hoping to a few jazz places in harlem that i found really exhilarating (sp ?).

i'm sure n.o. has that also but the places i went to in the n.o. were tourist places...didn't have the same feel.....
