Are the cigars originating from Cuba actually the gold standard? If, so, does anyone know how I might be able to obtain one(needed for a special friend). Thanks in advance. Hamster

quality very inconsistent and most top international makers like Davidoff no longer operate there.

but individually they are still the best, just expect more than usual number of bad ones in a box. most frequent problem is they draw poorly. Best ones, like you see rated tops in "Cigar Aficionato" are always big with full complex flavor, like Churchills or Robustos. If your freind likes small mild cigars, the better deals aren't Cubans.

getting it is another matter.

Best bet is from someone coming in thru airport in Canada, MX , etc and buy one from a reputable dealer.

I've met folks in US who have bought them over internet from reputable shops in Canada. Don't know any tho. Anyone get some this way lately?

My buddies bring back small quantities from Cuba on trips. remove bands and customs doesn't care to inquire much with so few brought in. My buddies cut and draw them down there to test. They know where to get them and educated enuf to spot fakes easy. Fakes with factory bands are sold just outside some factories! But no trips planned in near future unfortunately.

good luck and hope it works out!

Hamster, as it happens, I have a friend out of the country right now, he travels quite a bit, and he almost always brings me back a box (usually 2) of genuine Cuban Montecristo's. Personally I think they are the best of the best, a bit stronger than what you can buy here in the states and terryray is right, you get the occasional bad cigar. If Smashmouth were still around and posting he could vouch for the quality of the cigar I sent him, would be glad to do the same for you, get my e-mial from Jack. No guarantees, like I said, ALMOST ALWAYS he hooks me up and he mentioned it before leaving last week.

Pick up the latest copy of Cigar Afficianado, the one with Arnold on the cover. Great article on gambling as well as a great article on the new Cubans - though you will find they rate a number of much cheaper cigars just as high as the Cubans.

In my travels I have found a number of places that knowingly or unknowingly sell fake Cubans. If you study the wrappers and boxes enough, you can learn to pick out fakes. Was at a Sandals in St. Lucia, sure enough their Cubans were fakes. Same with the Marriot in the Bahamas and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. CA has a good page on their web site about spotting fakes. Its almost easier to find fake Cubans than it is the real things.

I take CA at their word and tend to buy their 88+ rated cigars that are $10 or less per. I have gotten some great recomendations there. I have smoked some great Cubans and I do love cigars, but to me a $40 cigar is not necessarily 8x as good as a $5 cigar that they rate just as high.

By the way what would you rate as your PERSONAL favorite non-cuban cigar. I think mine would have to be the Bolivar, tough to find many bigger than a corona though.
