After kicking boyscouts out of parks--wanting to pledge of alliegence in school--and definately no prayer in schools--

ACLU Changing Its Tune?

The University of Michigan at Dearborn is planning to spend $25,000 to install two footbaths for Muslim students to use before prayers.

Muslim leaders had considered trying to raise funds to pay for the baths privately ? until the American Civil Liberties Union said it would not oppose having the university pay for the project. The director of the Detroit ACLU called the footbaths a "reasonable accommodation" to resolve "safety and cleanliness issues."

The ACLU has a long history of opposing other activities associated with prayer and religion on public property. It sued a Louisiana school board over allowing a preacher to give out pizza at school during lunch periods, and it sued a west Texas school district over an optional Bible class.

The difference is in the area of health. If you haven't worked in place with muslim peope then you haven't had the pleasure of watching a couple guys clean their feet in the sink you are waiting to use. The university is doing it in the interest of the non-muslim students moreso than the muslim.

hmmm...the aclu finally found a religion it can defend...

a classic.."Muslim leaders in Metro Detroit have decided not to raise private money to pay for two footbaths at a local college campus now that the American Civil Liberties Union has said the plan doesn’t pose constitutional problems"....

funny. i thought that was the supreme court's job.....

now,the precedent is set...

another classic..."“We view it as an attempt to deal with a problem, not an attempt to make it easier for Muslims to pray.,”

who cares how you "view it" - if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, my friend, it is a DUCK.....

isn`t it odd...that islam doesn`t allow gays....so why doesn't the aclu attack it like it atttacks the boy scouts?

maybe because the boyscouts don`t chop off heads?....

can you say hypocrites?....cowards?....

gm...if it`s "not" religious, why do they HAVE to wash their feet?....why don`t they just wear clean socks?....

or how about a little plastic dishpan in your backpack?.....fill it at the sink or the drinking fountain....wash feet.

problem solved.....

c`mon you soldier disparaging liberals...you jumped out of your skin to smack our soldiers for being rude.....

lets have some comments...

comments,please....

can`t figure a way to spin this into a bush/cheney or troop bash?.....

therefore,nothing to say?...

What do want want people to say? You think this warrants some huge outrage by anybody but yourself.

As goofy and hypocritical as the ACLU has been over the years, i'm not sure this one even warrants a mention. It certainly isn't anything to get all excited about, you notwithstanding.

you had plenty to say about our troops being harsh with iraqi recruits.....

a video of american soldiers being harsh with some iraqi police recruits gives you a woody?....a potential constitutional issue?..........zzzzzzz...

that`s what i thought....your thought process is limited to your liberal agenda...

let me spell it out for you....the left has been arguing until there is blood coming out their nose about this as far as every other religion is concerned.......precedent after precedent, yada, yada yada....

but now it is okay to give islam what ever it wants......

prayer rooms/foot baths/islamic schools/

what`s next?...machetes for beheading?

do you understand the term"double standard"?....

do you recall who formed the aclu?...and why?....

of course not...

go back to sleep....

I'm on record here many times as saying that the ACLU is a joke. Yes, they carry out a liberal agenda.

And yes, I take more interest in things that can get <more of> our troops killed than some footbath that may or may not resolve some hygiene issue.

If you think this footbath is a constitutional issue, start fighting the good fight, buddy.

A liberal agenda with this non-activism by the ACLU? You've outdone yourselves this time, Wheezer-BarkingDog-Combo. Tell me where I am wrong in pointing out why you two are off-base in your claims?

? The ACLU (deals with legislative cases and constitutional ruling assessments every week) is issuing a statement that they don't consider this situation a constitutional discrepancy. Are you suggesting that high-level attorneys (of any group) do not have the right to have a constitutional opinion on a legal issue? Only the Supreme Court can issue commentary or non-binding opinions on the Constitution? Ridiculous.

? Isn't this an issue for the University to decide upon? Have they decided what they are going to do? The ACLU merely says they don't object to the University paying for it on public health issues, and it becomes a "religious freedoms" issue for you guys? Leap of faith, to be sure. The muslim leaders were going to raise funds to pay for it until the University decided to do it? And the ACLU says okie dokie if the University wants to pay for it? Who is being wronged here, exactly? Did the University crumble under some kind of hidden pressure that I'm not seeing? Is this a real story at all? The university welcomes diversity, wants the students to be there, and decides to pay for this both for them and the cleanliness for other students. And you guys blame the ACLU for saying they don't have a problem with it?

No lawsuit. Nobody bringing one. The only ridiculous case being made here is by you two hysterians.

Carry on.

Is it illegal to use your break to pray at work? Is it illegal to wash your feet in the bathroom sink? Since religion gets a free pass in our society, we can't challenge things done in the name of God....unless you kill someone. Stop giving a free pass to religion (I'm all for it) and we can tell people you can't have a prayer break at 7pm and you can't wash your feet in the sink.

The university can't get around this one, so they are installing a foot washer...not for the muslims as much as for everyone else.

I like how the Republicans hate the ACLU and then bitch like little girls about not having prayer in schools. I don't like most of the crap the ACLU does, but a lot of the people hating on the ACLU think we should allow public schools to teach Bible Study. It's hypocritical.

Republicans do not like anything representing personal freedom. They want you to become blind sheep, goosestepping along, not complaining about anything, and of course, accepting their spin no matter how ridiculous.

Its called the dumbing down of America. Proof that it is happening, 2004 presidential election results. nearly 60 million total idiots. keep them smart enough to work in banks, insurance companies and as insurance agents but not to smart where they have to think for themselves.

Disagree with kosar and others who attack aclu. Its a wonderful organization that is protecting all of your asses, no matter if you can't see that.

I assume people are free to piss in the footbaths if the urinals are occupied? That's enough fairness for me.

Statistically speaking, 97% of all Muslim terrorists have dirty feet. Those with reasonable access to foot baths have been far less likely to plan or carry out attacks ...or commit butcherings.

hmm-got another for the list per criminal rights--at law abiding citizens expense.

Gives St. Louis Residents Video Cameras to Monitor Police
Wednesday, June 20, 2007

ST. LOUIS ?

After years of complaints of police misconduct, some residents of high-crime neighborhoods in St. Louis are being given free video cameras to help them monitor officers.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Eastern Missouri launched the project Wednesday after television crews last year broadcast video of officers punching and kicking a suspect who led police on a car chase.

"The idea here is to level the playing field, so it's not just your word against the police's word," said Brenda Jones, executive director of the ACLU chapter.

The ACLU has given cameras and training to about 10 residents in north St. Louis, a high-crime, low-income part of the city that members said is plagued by police misconduct. The group hopes to expand the program to 50 to 100 residents.

Police spokesman Richard Wilkes declined to comment when asked how the program might affect police relations with the public.

"We don't have any opinions or feelings about it one way or another," Wilkes said. "Hopefully it records positive interactions between the police and the community."

Former police Sgt. K.L. Williams is overseeing the training, teaching residents how to videotape officers from a safe distance without interrupting arrests or searches.

"The citizens are not there to interfere with any police contacts," Williams said.

ACLU spokesman Redditt Hudson said the program also will include free workshops to teach residents about their rights when approached by police.

Project organizers have worked closely with police to make sure they are aware of the program's goals, Jones said.

The ACLU declined to release the names of people participating in the video monitoring.

Ya never heard about this organization getting bad mouth before Fox was created. Same old tactic. Pick out one thing out of a million and run with it and then watch mental midgets fall right in line.

So, I guess Dogs nor Weasel (he may just not have seen this - I know Dogs has...) can show where my points were wrong? Until they are - which they could be - there really is no story here. Easier to throw stones at our beloved attorney, Edward, than actually stick to the case at hand, I guess.

My dearest Chad:

Although I question your judgment concerning the Twinkies, I have the utmost respect for your knowledge and awareness of the world. I have proudly worn the badge of Madjacks whipping boy since 2-01.

Wayne, Weasel and their devil hordes have ridden roughshod over poor moi since the beginning of time when I was one of the few clear thinking people at this forum. Slowly but surely, this board smartened up with the addition (or should I say coming out) of Kosar, Saul (to some degree), gmroz, bj, stevie, djv, sponge, that guy up in Boston, yourself, and others who genuinely exhibit a modicum of rationale thought.

A sure sign of lack of intelligence is when one brands a person as a certain typed of societal deviant based upon his or her occupation. For years thats what these troglodyte morons have done.

Now with that out of the way, lets screw all these idiotic insurance agents, bankers, etc.

`scuse me...but the university`s "footing" this to the tune of $25,000 of taxpayer`s money....what do you mean "they can`t get around this one"?...are you serious?...

look,if this isn`t religious...if it`s only an issue about being sanitary,use a f-cking moistened towelette....

pre-wrapped,you whip one out and claen your dirty feet...thow it in the trash can....

the taxpayer makes out...the muslims have clean feet...nobody`s offended...

you have NO argument... period...this is about taxpayers funding religious practices...a specific religion`s practices...

gm....i really don`t know what you`re trying to say........it`s gobbledygook....please clarify...

here`s my take in a nutshell...that fricking un-american orgainzation has spent the last sixty years fighting EVERY religious accomodation in public life.....

we are at a point where you can't have christmas trees in public schools anymore....and christmas tress are a secular symbol.....

yet here we have the vaunted a.c.l.u.telling us that it's perfectly fine to build prayer foot baths with public monies for muslims?.....

say you`re religion wouldn`t allow you to use toilet paper...if you started to wash your backside in the sink, think you could get a state funded bidet?...

i think the a.c.lu. is afraid....i think they`re gutless wonders...they see the violence islamists are responsible for....and they wet their beds.....

or,there are different rules for different religions...

1600 years ago uncivilized man did not have shoes, therefore foot bathing (numerous times daily) was the norm.......fine...

in 2007 (and for quite some time now) we wash once, maybe twice....

and we don't smite necks either.....

Hey fellas, whats the big deal? Its not like the foot baths will have only one narrow, religious purpose. The U of M Golf Team now has a place to wash their clubs and shoes after a round.
