Michigan State coach compares Bradley to Gonzaga; Les says Spartans in class with 9 others

PEORIA - Tom Izzo has a pretty good idea what he and his ninth-ranked Michigan State basketball team are in for at 8:05 tonight at sold-out Carver Arena.

"It's our first real road game this year and I know what the atmosphere will be like," the Spartans' coach said. "Some nonconference games you can go to a place, play average and win. The problem with this game is we know we can't play average and win. We could play great and lose. That makes it a little scarier.

"It'll be a very difficult game for us. The only plus for us is we know it. We're not going in there thinking this is just another school. (BU coach Jim Les has) built a reputation there. That program is heading in the Gonzaga way of things. That's not a bad way to go."

A nice compliment there for the 6-2 Bradley Braves. Les didn't need much prompting to return the favor toward the 6-1 visitors.

"They look like a top-10 team," he said. "They're big, physical, well-coached, athletic and have a lot of weapons. They're a sound, fundamental basketball team that doesn't come at you with trickery or needing to make huge adjustments. They are who they are and we are who we are. How those styles match up against each other remains to be seen."

Those BU style points, many coming in groups of three, are another concern of Izzo's.

"It'll be critical to see if we can defend a team that's completely opposite of anybody we've played so far," he said. "They're a tremendous 3-point shooting team with very good guard play, as good as any tandem we'll play all year. And they've added some size this year, which should help 'em."

And the Braves have been pretty good at home, with a 29-game nonconference winning streak at Carver. Although BU has averaged 9,372 in its four home games this season, Les doesn't think they've provided much of an advantage so far.

"I'm looking for a response from our fans," Les said. "I don't think the atmosphere in our building has been that great this year. Our fans need to step up, energize, come with great enthusiasm and get off their hands a little bit. This is a great opportunity for our program, but I also want appreciation shown from our fans, too, and start to create the environment we want to have."

Bradley faced that sort of crowd mayhem at East Lansing, Mich., last season when the Spartans broke open a 19-19 game with a dominant second half on the way to an 82-53 rout.

"For about 15 or 16 minutes, we guarded 'em very well and took them out of stuff they wanted to do," BU guard Jeremy Crouch said. "We were just so impatient offensively it eventually led to some easy baskets for them and they made a big run on us. The biggest thing we need to do is take them out of their sets with our pressure and our denial."

And hit a bunch of 3-pointers. And get a big lift from the crowd.

While there are other resume-building games ahead for the Braves, this clearly is the one that will resonate the loudest when March arrives.

"The guys have had this one circled on the calendar," Crouch said. "We're extremely excited right now."

Braves briefs: A couple of noteworthy top-10 teams that visited Peoria as Bradley opponents, both Missouri Valley Conference members, were left off Monday's list. Larry Bird and Indiana State came to town as the nation's second-ranked team in February 1979 and left with a 91-72 victory. Also, during the 1981-82 season, No. 2 Wichita State visited and was beaten by the Braves 55-47. That makes Bradley's home record against top 10 visitors 18-9 overall. ... With standing-room only tickets sold Monday, Bradley could challenge its all-time best crowd of 11,444, set last season against Illinois State.

----- Michigan State leads series 2-0. ... The teams met last year in East Lansing with the Spartans earning an 82-53 win. The first meeting came in 1969 at Salt Lake City when Michigan State won 89-87. ... This season, the Spartans have beaten Chicago State (86-53), Louisiana-Monroe (83-65), Missouri (86-83), Oakland (75-71), North Carolina State (81-58) and Jacksonville (80-51) while losing only to UCLA (68-63). ... All were at home except the Missouri and UCLA games, which were at the CBE Classic in Kansas City. ... Bradley has won 29 consecutive home nonconference games, which is tied with Arkansas for the fifth-longest active streak nationally. Duke's 55-game streak is the longest and Michigan State is third at 31. ... The game features the nation's top two active career assist leaders in Ruffin, with 533, and Neitzel, with 471.

KEYS FOR SPARTANS: Dominate boards, collect second shots and get Braves into a halfcourt game

KEYS FOR BRAVES: Turn up defensive pressure and force turnovers; make plenty of 3-point shots and make use of inside bodies

MSU prepares for hostile environment at Bradley

?A basketball-crazy community.?

Those were the words MSU men?s basketball head coach Tom Izzo used to describe Peoria, Ill. ? the city to which No. 9 MSU travels today to face off against the Bradley Braves (6-2).

?(They) understand the game,? he said. ?They support (it).?

Izzo said an alumnus sent him an article to read about how MSU?s arrival at Carver Arena is the biggest thing to happen there in 10 years.

?I?m not sure we?re that big, or maybe they don?t have a lot of things that have happened there,? Izzo said with a smile.

Izzo said Bradley?s offense revolves around ball screens.

?There are a lot of random ones, a lot of quick ones,? he said. ?They are very good at it; they do a very good job of disguising them.?

The Braves have not hosted a top-10 team since 1982, when they defeated No. 8 Tulsa, 82-79. However, Bradley has won 29 consecutive nonconference home games.

After Saturday?s victory against Jacksonville, senior guard Drew Neitzel said Bradley was a great team last year. MSU got off to a quick start, taking them out of the game early before winning 82-53.

?We?re not taking it for granted or taking it lightly at all,? Neitzel said. ?We know it?s going to be a dog fight especially going down there. We?ve heard it?s pretty hostile, so we?re excited for the challenge.?

A tough schedule

Izzo said he takes full responsibility for the team?s difficult nonconference schedule.

?I do think there is a benefit going on the road playing in tough places with some of our young guys,? he said. ?The different style (of play) is what does excite me, even though it frustrates me at times at practice. I think it will prepare us more and more.?

Izzo said this week is similar to a Big Ten week ? but in December. After Bradley, MSU travels to Salt Lake City to compete against No. 20 BYU.

?Bradley is very good, and BYU could be as good as anyone we play in the nonconference,? he said. ?This is a big week, probably even tougher than a Big Ten week because both games are on the road a week before finals.?

With a difficult test ahead, sophomore forward Raymar Morgan said the team will try to focus on defense, rebounding and pushing the ball.

Walk on

For the second contest in a row, freshman walk-on guard Mike Kebler made it into the game for the Spartans.

Without his four-rebound effort in the two minutes Kebler played, Izzo said the Spartans may not have out-rebounded Jacksonville.

?It?s exciting,? Kebler said. ?It?s really nice to play in front of crowds this big. I?m just trying not to make myself look stupid. I?ve always dreamed about playing at State.?

He did have a chance to touch the ball on the offensive shot, but his jump shot was blocked and never made it to the basket. After the play, Kebler couldn?t help but smile.

?That one shot, I wasn?t too focused on the defense,? he said. ?I was pretty focused on getting my shot off.?

? Probable lineups:

MSU

Pos. Name PPG

F (41) Marquise Gray (6-8) 7.4

C (14) Goran Suton (6-10) 9.3

F (2) Raymar Morgan (6-7) 18.0

G (5) Travis Walton (6-2) 3.3

G (11) Drew Neitzel (6-0) 14.3

Bradley

F (12) Theron Wilson (6-5) 7.3

F (22) Matt Salley (6-7) 5.3

G (14) Jeremy Crouch (6-5) 14.8

G (20) Daniel Ruffin (5-10) 16.4

G (24) Andrew Warren (6-5) 11.3

? MSU update: Get ready for plenty of Morgan at power forward. That makes sense in this matchup because Bradley is small and screen-heavy on offense. Izzo said the Braves' offense is "ball screens." MSU plans to "switch four," which means it needs four players who are mobile enough to switch on screens and limit the Braves' open looks. MSU did that in Saturday's win over smallish Jacksonville, with Morgan logging minutes at power forward. He called that game "great practice to get ready for Bradley." Expect Izzo to start Walton over freshman Kalin Lucas until further notice. MSU will need Walton's defensive intensity right away in this one. Walton had 15 points and nine assists against Bradley a year ago. The Spartans are taking better care of the ball, with a manageable 23 turnovers in the past two games. Meanwhile, Neitzel leads the Big Ten in assists, with Walton tied for third and Lucas tied for seventh. MSU is intent on rebounding better. The Spartans are much bigger than Bradley, but the Braves are quick and shoot 25.3 3-pointers a game, which means lots of long caroms.

? Bradley update: Ruffin gets most of the attention, but Izzo said Crouch is "maybe as good a shooter as we'll see all year." He has made 30-of-64 (46.9 percent) from long range. The Braves started the season with an 84-75 defeat at Illinois-Chicago and also lost to a very good Vanderbilt team in the South Padre Island Invitational. Bradley beat Iowa in the same event and also has a victory over Iowa State. Preseason expectations include an NCAA Tournament bid, two years after Ruffin, Crouch and 7-foot star Patrick O'Bryant led the Braves to the Sweet Sixteen. O'Bryant then left for the NBA, but Bradley has a 7-foot junior college transfer in David Collins who gives the team a different look off the bench. He's averaging 7.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in just 14 minutes a game. This is a deep team that is hard to beat when the 3-point bombs are falling and when it's forcing turnovers. Bradley has 78 3-pointers and 77 steals. But opponents are shooting 45.5 percent against the Braves. If you can take care of the ball, you can get good shots against them.
