Yes 6-5, I was working in hospice until I was laid off in May of last year. I was able to secure a position in home health a couple of months later that I subsequently left for what I believed to be, a "wonderful opportunity" at a LTC facility only 5 miles from my home. A month there was enough for me to see the dangers that place posed to the staff and residents and I voluntarily left without lining something else up. Some may think this a big mistake (myself included, at times), but I did what I ultimately knew to be right. I can't prove anything but I strongly suspect that departure is having a direct effect on my current difficulty in finding a position.
I have had offers from agencies with home health contracts but they're offering me 9 county territories and substantially less pay than I was making in the past. The mileage allowance probably wouldn't cover the actual travel required and the patient load spread over such a territory is daunting. I decided I'd look better overall to another recruiter if I stayed unemployed rather than to appear to be a "job hopper". I'm to the point, now, that I'd take part-time temp work if I could see that an agency could keep me working but none will commit. My hospital days are so far behind me that the local hospitals are recruiting new grads rather than hiring an experienced nurse who doesn't have recent experience in the in-patient environment.
I never thought that nursing would be affected so much by the economy and always heard there was a shortage..... go figure.
