A Sweeping Change in the U.S. Labor Movement

The executive board of the Service Employees International Union (search), the nation's largest labor union, has given its organization, "full and final" approval to abandon the AFL-CIO (search) ? a move that could lead to the dismantling of the AFL-CIO. The SEIU board says, "the debates of the past ten years ... have made clear that there is a fundamental and apparently irreconcilable disagreement about how to rebuild workers' strength."

Specifically, the SEIU says its "first priority" is bringing workers back to organized labor, while the AFL-CIO is focused on changing the political climate. So, the SEIU says, "we should respectfully accept our differences and pursue the strategy we believe will work."

It means working people will get more of the dick.

Of course, doctors and lawyers have the biggest most powerful unions of all but many of them would cheer this development.

How did I know that would be your opinion?

Anyone else care to give a more insightful view?

Dawgball, I'm no expert either, but it sounds
like the SEIU has the guts to stand up and say
enough is enough...we're not going to fill your
(union leaders) pockets anymore as you weaken
our cause by incompetance...the AFL-CIO has
been corrupt for decades and the rank and file
are finally standing up and throwing eggs at these
basturds....at least that's my take...

So this was voted on by the working members of the SEIU?

Dawg The SEIU stance is dues paid by workers should go to benefit of workers not political contributions.

It not only has got in their craw but many members of AFL-CIO have been rabid for years that there contributions go for political candidate they do not confirm and they have no say in matter.

Good for them. I am a member of the UFCW and I feel we need to break away also. Several months ago I was at a dues increase meeting and this subject about wasting money supporting political canidates was talked about alot and many had very strong feelings on that matter. Not every union member was/is a Dick Gephardt supporter you know. Focus on better contracts and taking care of your members.

Didn't the Gators stomp Georgia again last year?

You wouldn't happen to be talking about this game would you?

But I guess you're getting used to this by now. I'm sure you will somehow prove that this is a neo-con twisting opinions into facts.
