The comparison to tournament poker doesn't work b/c it is an elimination game.

The more appropriate comparison is to live ring game in poker. Here people have set bankroll but only bring a small % of it per buy-in. You can manage your money based on how long you play each session, what table limits you move up or down based on how you're doing, etc. The difficulty is supposed your MM tells you to move down from 15/30 to 10/20 when you're having a bad run, but you spot a very soft game at 20/40. You should take advantage of the soft game b/c in the big scheme of things it's all about playing +EV games (unless you're psychologically on tilt and not prepared to play that game).

Very similar scenario in sports betting. One distinction is in sports-betting the odds are not known. You think you have an angle that will produce 58% or whatever but no guarantee the dynamics haven't shifted or line has gotten sharper or whatever. But you can still pick your spots with sports, especially if you find a soft line you can hammer on a highly rated play, etc.
