Air filter - auto question

I am pretty defiant about changing my air filter. I am always asked about it when I get my oil changed. I only change the filter once the filter is mostly black. (Every 9 months to a year)

Is this okay or should I change it sooner?

Never change your air filter, assuming you hate decent gas mileage.


Yes, a dirty air filter is a bad thing and should be changed regularly.

I know almost nothing about cars, but from what I read......filters you don't fudge on.

They are a cheap insurance against costly repairs down the road.

Depends on what kind of driving you do. City or dusty country roads.

I always look at mine and change it when really dirty and might even blow it out instead of changing.

A dirty filter isn't a bad thing only when close to being clogged.

if you cant see light shine through paper filter change it.
Do this cover your nose and mouth ok got that ? Now try to breathe! Kinda hard isnt it?

Autos same thing clogged air or gas filters or fuel inectors will cost you hundreds more in gas usage and huge repairs always.

Also check every hose in PC system from the PCV valve to every where elses cracked leaking hoses can really screw your vehicle up

Also check belt for shine or cracks replace it if it's showing excessive wear.

I agree. Dusty country roads are the worst.
Just look at the filter... its not hard to tell when its time. Don't trust the boys down at jiffy lube.

air filter $30 more or less, engine assy $3000 more or less, easy answer for me. When in doubt, change it out.

dusty conditions?

had the front crank seal replaced in our AC190XT tractor, 1974, grease monkey left the flex hose from the air cleaner to the turbo intake tube off. Two days of discing ground for soybeans & the next AM tractor would not start! Diesels start with no spark, just atomized fuel injected into compressed hot air. Dust scoured the cylinder walls and no compression! I learnt a lesson about clean fuel and clean air at an early age:director:
