Nobody is going to accuse the Falcons of taking it easy in practice this week.
Guard Kyle Green had to get five stitches above his left eye, Falcons coach Dave Pilipovich said. Green dove for a loose ball during Tuesday?s practice and collided with one of his teammates. Green will be able to play in Thursday?s Mountain West conference quarterfinal game against New Mexico, Pilipovich said.
?We?ve been pretty competitive in practice,? Pilipovich said Wednesday. ?We?re playing hard and competitive, which is good. That?s something you have to keep building on. You can?t do that just in two days or two weeks. That?s something you have to get better and better at.?
Senior Taylor Stewart made the trip with the team, although Pilipovich said he will not play because of a broken fibula he suffered in January. Pilipovich said he thought Stewart, a senior, deserved to go on the trip. That meant someone had to stay home, and forward Adam Brakeville was the one left off the traveling squad. Pilipovich said he was chosen because he has played the least of everyone since the coaching change.
?That?s the hardest thing I?ve had to do so far,? Pilipovich said. ?He plays so hard. It breaks my heart he?s not here.?
Pilipovich said Stewart, who has been active in his leadership role with the team since he got hurt, will do what he can to help his teammates during the conference tournament.
?Taylor didn?t ask to be hurt, and he needs to be with his team,? Pilipovich said. ?He brings leadership in the locker room and on the bench. He?s played here for three years. He can talk to the younger guys, in film and during walkthrough. He can be a value to our team.?
