The teams are mirror images of each other. Both LSU and Alabama play fast, swarming defense with hard-hitting playmakers who have a future in the NFL; both rely heavily on the running game to open up passing lanes; and both have big-play capabilities on special teams. Position by position, this is as equal a matchup as college football has seen in a long time.

The most noticeable difference is the coaches. Yes, both Nick Saban and Les Miles have won national championships, and, sure, they have almost identical records against ranked opponents, but that is where the similarities end.

Saban has all the charm of J. Edgar Hoover, and he runs practice the way the East Germans used to run training camp for the Stasi. He is a task master, detail-oriented in the extreme. Perfection is his closest friend. Even if you?re having a casual cup of coffee with him, it always seems as if you aren?t sipping it to his exacting standards. This is not someone for whom chitchat comes easy. He is called ?distant? by those who like him, and far worse by those who don?t.

Miles, on the other hand, is the kind of guy you expect to be carrying a rabbit?s foot and a pair of dice in his pocket at all times. He is quick with a smile, usually a sly one that more often than not comes with a wink, as if only you and he are in on some unspoken secret. It would surprise no one if he pulled out a deck of cards and began shuffling as he told a joke. He is one of those people who holds your hand a little longer than normal when shaking it, drawing you in with a slight pull to bring you closer to his world. As a result, Miles has been called everything from a riverboat gambler, to the luckiest coach alive.

Each team reflects their coach?s personality. Alabama executes their game-plans with the clinical efficiency of a biologist dissecting a frog, while LSU takes a more seat-of-the-pants, let-the-game-come-to-us approach. Miles doesn?t exactly wing it, but he is much more of a feel coach than a tactician. Saban is like a card counter at a blackjack table, running complex permutations through his steel-trap mind to gain an edge over those who rely on luck.

Look no further than how they prepared during the bye week to see the differences in style and personality. ?I get a little more sleep,? Miles said of how he prepared in the week leading up to the biggest game of the year, maybe the biggest regular season game of the decade. ?I try to catch up, and make sure I see my kids? game on the weekend before.?

?I stick to my routine,? Saban said. End of discussion.

Miles has been known to dance and sing for his players to keep them loose, and he told this group that they needed to embrace the magnitude of the game, enjoy the hype, and drink in every moment of the experience, a far cry from Saban who continues to preach the gospel of the ?Alabama standard? no matter the opponent or the situation.

?There is nothing calculated on my part,? Miles said. ?It?s more the feel of the day and wanting to communicate to my team what I think is relevant. I don?t give much thought to how I?m perceived outside this football building and the campus at LSU.?

He also doesn?t think there is that great a difference between any coach?s overall objectives. ?I want our guys to be focused,? he said. ?I don?t want any distractions, but you?re allowed to let a little steam off. Heck, we?re not playing that game until Saturday. Focus is important, but we want our guys to look around and enjoy the moment.?

Saban, on the other hand, wants the week to go just like any other, with the same standards of excellence he expects out of everyone from his linebackers to the person cooking his eggs at Waffle House.

?The people around you, when you function the same way from a time management standpoint and a preparation standpoint, from your disposition on the field with the players, all those things I try to do the same because they are all going to feed off of what I do,? Saban said.

That will be the difference in a game that is equal at every position. The team that best feeds off the energy of their head coach, and the coach that can best inject his personality into the game will come out the winner.

?I don?t think there is that big a difference, really,? Miles said. ?Nobody really knows any coach that well unless you get a little bit more on the inside. And I can?t imagine any coach from the sixth grade to the NFL who just goes through the motions.?

From what I see there is a difference between the two teams at linebacker.

Alabam's are 245, 250, 260 and 280 - plays D-End as well (3-4 or 4-3)

LSU's Linebackers are 205, 215 and 220.

What are you doing here? Tell me why you are here. If you are not here to win a national championship, you're in the wrong place. You boys are special. I don't want my players to be like other students. I want special people. You can learn a lot on the football field that isn't taught in the home, the church, or the classroom. There are going to be days when you think you've got no more to give and then you're going to give plenty more. You are going to have pride and class. You are going to be very special. You are going to win the national championship for Alabama.

If you want to walk the heavenly streets
of gold, you gotta know the password,

"Roll, tide, roll!"

One time Coach Bryant was asked what the secret was to getting good football players. He answered that the kids he recruited had good mamas and papas.

Sounds simple but when you think about it, it says alot.

The once proud Alabama football program had fallen on tough times, winning only 4 games in the previous three years. The decision was made to fire J. B. (Ears) Whitworth after suffering a 28-0 loss to TCU and a 40-0 blowout at the hands of Auburn. A Press Conference was held in the Shamrock Hotel in Houston, Texas, and Paul "Bear" Bryant was announced as the new head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide. Approximately one month earlier Coach Bryant was in the same hotel meeting with officials about coming to Alabama. A major item that concerned Bryant was the feeling of his former coach and the then athletic director, Hank Crisp. After Coach Crisp assured him that he wanted him to return and the AD's job was his, the deal was sealed. Bryant called a meeting with his A&M players and simply stated, "Gentlemen, I've heard Mama calling," he told them, "and now I'm going home." The Alabama Crimson Tide Football program was about to enjoy a era that may never be matched again in the history of college football.

Bryant was on his way to Jacksonville where Texas A&M was playing in the Gator Bowl, when he came to Tuscaloosa to meet the football team. The players had heard how tough he was, and how things were going to change. They soon learned after he called a team meeting at the dorm and sent out word for everybody to be there at 1:15 in the afternoon.

One of Alabama's best players showed up late and was locked out. He started pounding on the door, trying to get in. Coach Bryant turned to his assistant coach and said, "Go see who that is. And tell him, whoever it is, that we don't need him." The team learned right then and there that Bear meant business.

Bryant then said "I'm not worried about whether I'm going to win or lose. I know I'm going to win. I know that. And I'm not worried about my assistant coaches. I know they're winners. And I'm not worried about whether Alabama is going to win. I know that. The only thing I don't know is how many of you in this room are winners, and how many of you will be with us."

Bryant said that he'd be back after the bowl game and that when he got back, they were going to work - and those who were winners would be around to see the rewards, and those who weren't, wouldn't. The players were in awe of him. In fact, they were scared to death of him.

While recruiting his first class, Bryant told his freshmen that if they followed his rules and played they way he demaned, they would win the National Championship before they graduated. Many thought Bryant's statement as just another recruiting tactic.

................................................................

Got to love the tradition of Alabama.

I wonder what Coach Bryant would do with the weed smokers on his team ?

I wish you the best of luck because I like your plays Scott, and I tail you more often than not. I personally teased LSU and the under. Bama is too 1 dimensional to blow LSU out. LSU has played FAR superior teams and on the road. LSU is outstanding in night games. If LSU can slow the run they win. I don't know if they can slow the run. Lee is a different QB. We actually look good offensively. We have not faced a D like Bamas but Bama has not beaten a quality opponent, Ark at home? Penn State is a joke, they were tied at the half with UCheat, 4 turnovers by ucheat gave them the second half cover. It will be a great game. I am praying for an LSU win but expecting a close loss and a rematch in New Orleans where we will get those son of a bitches. Around the bowl and down the hole ROLL TIDE ROLL

Alabama's Nick Saban used to coach at LSU, and went 4-1 against the Crimson Tide.

Alabama is 45-3 when leading at halftime under Saban. Two of the three losses were to LSU.

LSU is 48-4 at night under Les Miles. So he doesn't mind kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Burton Burns is the running backs assistant coach for Alabama, and stresses taking care of the football. In his five years, his main two-man tandem of backs has lost seven fumbles. Three in the last 1,033 carries. :00hour

Eleven players began the season on Alabama's roster already with their diplomas. In the past four years, the Crimson Tide have played 42 graduate students.

LSU has been in purple once all season because the Tigers almost always wear white at home. Which, while we're on the subject, every team should do. Let the home fans see the varied opponent colors.

LSU did not have a turnover in the month of October, or its last 59 possessions.

The halftime leader in this game has gone 2-6 in the past eight meetings.

Alabama is 63rd in the nation in pass offense, and LSU is 99th.:0008

Alabama has given up two rushing touchdowns at home - in four years.:scared

Arkansas and Penn State are 15-0 against all opponents not named Alabama. They lost to the Crimson Tide by a combined margin of 40 points.

LSU has gone for it on fourth down 15 times in the past two seasons. And succeeded 14 times.

The close game for either of these teams this season: 13 points.

There is already idle talk of a rematch; if it's a great game, if LSU comes close on the road, if blah, blah, blah.

Let's be clear. Barring all the other high-ranked unbeatens - Oklahoma State, Stanford and Boise State - falling over like dominoes, this should be the only Crimson Tide-Tiger collision the world sees this season.

This is their night, and this is their shot to get to the National Championship game.

.......................................................................

I have put in bold what I think will carry me to Victory Lane.

LSU is going to have to run to be successful in this game. With the 99th ranked passing offense it shows me that they are going to have some trouble come Saturday night.

Alabama's defense is some strong ass country boys with the home crowd right behind them.

This should be a great chess match of a game.

Three weeks before Thanksgiving so cold
and so damp

The dominant Tide were looking like champs

They have crushed their opponents, they cut them no slack

They have broken football hearts and never looked back.

And then on the field came big LSU

They were looking for blood and to take back their shoes.

What I saw next is hard to describe in my head

Alabama was swarming and filled LSU with dread.

Bama's linebackers were huge, they were strong, and well known.

Deep in the South football greatness is shown.

From Mobile to Florence, all over this state
Rolltide rang out and the players are great.

They?d beaten the Gators, they?d made many cry.
We all know their attitude: never say die!

And then there was Saban and what can we say.

Teams that come to Alabama are going to have to pay.

An SEC title he?d win us already,

And now was his job to keep the team steady.

And then it was done on that fatefull night. Alabama scored touchdowns as LSU put up a fight.

It was not enough for a beatdown and they didn't get it done.

They came to Alabama and the bestest team won.

ROLL TIDE !

Good write-ups and info. The under really stands out to me as the play. The kicking game of Alabama needs to be mentioned as well as Lsu s 2 senior qb s. Our passing numbers are light because we have faced a higher caliber opponent on the road. Lsu has swag and will play tough. I am not predicting a win but I'n the immortal words of marquise hill- you better start respecting Lsu football or we are going to punch you I'n the mouth!

lol thats a good one Ryan

I see the differance in this game as being that Alabama has Trent Richardson. LSU does not.
Ware is good but not the same thing.

In the second half of this game, when it gets down to cases, Richardson is going for the Heisman Trophy for 2011.

The spotlight is on and Trent knows it.

If Trent can get anywhere near 200 yds rushing in this game, he wins the Heisman hands down.
