2 weeks ago, I was rushing around trying to get some Christmas shopping done. I was stressed out and not thinking very fondly of the Christmas season right then. It was dark, cold, and wet in the parking lot as I was loading my car up with gifts that I felt obligated to buy. I noticed that I was missing a receipt that I might need later. So mumbling under my breath, I retraced my steps to the shopping center entrance. As I was searching the wet pavement for the lost receipt, I heard a quiet sobbing. The crying was coming from a poorly dressed boy of about 12 years old.
He was short and thin. He had no coat. He was just wearing a ragged flannel shirt to protect him from the cold night's chill. Oddly enough, he was holding a hundred dollar bill in his hand. Thinking that he had gotten lost from his parents, I asked him whats was wrong. He told me his sad story.

He said that he came from a large family. He had three brothers and four sisters. His father had died when he was nine years old. His mother was poorly educated and worked two full time jobs. She made very little to
support her large family. Nevertheless, she had managed to skimp and save two hundred dollars to buy her children Christmas presents. The young boy had been dropped off, by his mother, on the way to her second job. He was to supposed to use the money to buy presents for all his siblings, then save just enough to take the bus home. He had not even entered the mall, when an older boy grabbed one of the hundred dollar bills and disappeared into the night.

I asked him why he didn't scream for help. He said that he did. "And nobody came to help you?" I wondered. The boy stared at the sidewalk and sadly shook his head.

"How loud did you scream?" I inquired. The soft-spoken boy looked up and meekly whispered, "help me!"

I realized that absolutely no one could have heard that poor boy cry for help, so I grabbed his other hundred dollar bill and ran to my truck.

you know, I have had similar weird stories told to me.

i'm struggling for dough myself but anyone who is lame enough to make up a bad story must really need the money more than I do, so I usually give what I can. i think mostly they are a lies or maybe some twisted socialogical experiment, but who cares.

i'm not a very religious person but i think in general things like that can come back to help you out....

here's a little story.... i always buy food or whatever for some homeless guys near my house. sometimes they'll even come in and sleep downstairs (keep in mind, my rowhouse is a shithole, so the main floor is a freaking wreck from too many parties during college) but anyway, they can stay down there and it's just understood that they dont come upstairs to any of our bedrooms. so anyway, we've had a few guys that will routinely be down there whenever the mood strikes them. so about 3-4 months have passed and none of my roomates have seen or heard from them. i'm going to meet a friend down in southeast at some club and as we're leaving, i go around a corner to go take a piss behind a dumpster. he gets approached by some guy who is looking to rob him or something -- i come around from the dumpster and see this.... who knows if he has a gun or whatever -- I am unarmed, as always. but within about 10 seconds, a few of the homeless guys that stay at my place on occasion see me come over -- they know this guy who is going after my buddy, so they work things out..... kind of weird twist of fate.

but for every true story, there must be 10 that are false. especially around here in the fall, when schools have freshman in for the first time, there are all sorts of scams that people try to play on people new to big cities.

i've had two college-aged kids- a guy and a girl -- come over to try to sell fake magazine subsriptions to me and neighbors.... i live around a bunch of minorites who struggle with english and would easily fall victim. anyway, these two are so desperate in trying to rip me off, i finally say -- you guys are so pathetic that i will give you $50 to do whatever but promise to just take the money and leave the area and not talk to any or my neighbors..... sure enough, I think I stunned them enough to actually have them leave (looking back, I probably should have called authorities or something, but atleast they left the more vulnerable people in my area alone.....tho they probably just went off to rip off more people)

who knows... it's a weird world. but if someone is really that destitute, i don't mind helping them, even if they drink it or whatever. god bless 'em. i'd try to make my life as interesting as possible if i were in their spot.

if i think they're ripping me off, i usually give them a little something and say that if they are that despereate that they must need the money more than me.... sometimes I think it makes them think a little bit about what they're doing because most people like that just go about it blindly thinking that they can outsmart everyone.

oh well, who knows...this reply doesnt make much sense anyway. just rambling.

very funny guys.... i give you the good ol' :thefinger :thefinger :thefinger :thefinger in a friendly manner.

those are only a couple of the g-rated stories.... lot's of weird stuff and plenty of trouble to be found in the city. i've gotta try to do something half-way decent in my life or else i know I'm really in for it when it's all over because I do plenty of unscrupulous things! ha ha.

take care,
