WHAT A PLACE!!! WENT THERE A COUPLE SUMMERS AGO ON A BACKPACKING TRIP. IMMEDIATELY OUT OF THE TRAIN STATION WE WALKED ACROSS THE STREET AND FOUND A CHEAP HOSTEL. I THINK BACK THEN IT WAS AROUND 20 EUROS. THERE ARE COMPARABLE PRICES AROUND THE CITY. THE RED LIGHT IS NOT TOO FAR AWAY FROM THE TRAIN STATION. THAT IS DEFINATELY WORTH A WALK THROUGH. THERE ARE ALSO NICE PARKS AND MUSEUMS IN THE TOWN IF YOU ARE INTO THAT SORT OF THING. A COUPLE OF PLACES THAT WE WENT TO THAT MIGHT BE OF SOME INTEREST ARE:
GRASSHOPPER-- LOCATED RIGHT ON ONE OF THE CANALS NEAR THE METRO STATION
BULLDOG--FURTHER INTO THE CITY PASSED THE RED LIGHT, GOOD PLACE SO SMOKE, DRINK AND SHOOT POOL.
THE NUMEROUS TAVERNS ALONG THE SIDESTREETS. SOME OF THE BEST TIMES WE HAD WERE IN THE SMALLEST OF BARS. EACH ONE IS PECULIAR.
CHANCES ARE YOU RUN INTO PEOPLE LOOKING TO HAVE A GOODT TIME; YOU CAN ALWAYS FIND PEOPLE LOOKING TO GET INTO THE SAME THINGS AS YOU

like an inexpensive shelter I think is what a hostel is, that's why they're cheap, just basic meat and potatoes a bed and all, but it is fine, works for me

three things:

1) Be very careful at night.....if you are in the "red light district" at night....be careful. Some scary motherfu**ers come out at night.

2) Go to the "sex museam"...trust me...you'll like it. It's not far from the train station, right on the main strip.

3) Ann Frank museam will put your life in perspective.....amazing!

Have fun :tongue

red light is pretty easy. just go there, and window shop. pick what you like. if you want to see live sex shows, they definitely advertise what's available, so choose your poison.

the greenhouse has the best w**d. the winner this year at the cannibis cup (hawaian snow). if you get in early for breakfast, the only place to go is barney's, which came in 3rd for w**d with Laughing Buddha. the other "award winning" coffee shop is DamKring. do a google search on "amsterdam coffee shop directory" and it has a nice map to print out with all the locations of all the coffee shop.

go to the GOA coffee shop and head for the back room. you can latch onto the giant hookah and smoke with the jamaicans. like ryson said, think hawaiian. they had a little chalk board with a menu and it all cost the same 30 gilders, but the amounts vary according to quality.

my buddy goes there every year for the red light district. one time he's up in this gals nest and the room is covered with wall-to-wall-to ceiling mirrors. he's doing his best dog impression, but everywhere he looks he sees himself and it's ruining the whole event.

he tries and tries and can't reach the conclusion, so finally the girl looks back and says, "Vos macht du!?!?" (or some dutch equivalent). She flips him over and straddles him like Johnny Bench. she envelopes his organ and commences to move and finishes him off in seconds. they are real pros there in amsterdam.

Have fun and avoid the hostels if you can. the heineken brewery is worth the time as well. at the end of the tour they herd you into the "tasting room" and dim the lights. you get to watch a 10-minute commercial and down all of that stuff you want for free.

Can't really add to the list of things to do/see in Amsterdam, do not underestimate the danger after dark in the Red Light district. Those Jamacians are some scary M.F's and if they approach you looking to sell you some weed or smack, just keep on walking.
Yes, you gotta check out the Bulldog, the Sex Museum and the Heineken brewery. Try and catch the next to last tour of the day at the Brewery if you can. We did that, and after the tour when you are taken up to the tasting room our guide told us we were welcome to stay as long as we wanted. That was because the last group was 15 minutes behind ours, and then the tasting room closed 15 minutes after they arrived. We were quite buzzed after leaving......;)
Also make sure you see Ann Frank's house and the Rembrant museum....as much fun as the "coffee" shops and other things are, it would be a shame to visit Amsterdam and miss the important sights......
If you are going to stay in a hostel, I suggest staying at the one out by the park. I've stayed at both the one just off the train station and the one out by the park and the one by the park is much nicer and safer. Its a bit out of the way, but the trams are quite efficient and if you get lost almost everyone speaks enough English to get you pointed back in the right direction.
Enjoy your visit.....
