i just read this guy's column in the cnn / si web site & although i have no opinion or don't really care who is rated #1 in the pre-season, i know there is interest....so i thought that some might find this interesting...

Stewart Mandel > INSIDE COLLEGE FOOTBALL

With Tim Tebow returning, Florida will be the most overwhelming preseason favorite in recent memory. Junior linebacker Brandon Spikes is the only player on the Gators' already stout defense that could be gone next season, should he decide to turn pro. Wide receiver Percy Harvin is likely NFL-bound, but all of Florida's speedy tailbacks return, and there are no shortage of other future playmakers waiting in the wings.

An Early Preseason Top 10 for 2009

1) Florida: Remember when the Gators brought back all five starters from their national championship basketball team? We could see the football equivalent. How often does the No. 1 team in the country bring back all 10 or 11 defensive starters? The Gators finished No. 9 nationally in total defense with mostly freshmen and sophomores.

2) Texas: The 'Horns came within a last-second touchdown of playing in Miami. McCoy returns for his senior season after setting an NCAA-record for completion percentage (76.7). So do receivers Jordan Shipley and Malcolm Williams and four starting offensive linemen. Young defensive backs Blake Gideon and Earl Thomas have the makings of potential stars.

3) USC: If quarterback Mark Sanchez returns, the Trojans will bring back 10 starters from the offense that lit up Penn State in the Rose Bowl. The Trojans will have to replace nearly their entire starting defense, but several of the reinforcements -- defensive end Everson Griffin, linebacker Chris Gallipo and defensive backs Shareece Wright and Will Harris -- have already played plenty.

4) Oklahoma: The Sooners won't be scoring 60 points a game next season -- nearly the entire offense will turn over, with or without Sam Bradford. But OU's defense, which played admirably against Florida, should be even better. Nine of its starters against the Gators were underclassmen, led by defensive tackle Gerald McCoy and linebacker Travis Lewis.

5) Alabama: It's been said that the Tide were a year ahead of schedule in '08. 'Bama was extremely young and, despite losing stalwarts like tackle Andre Smith, center Antoine Caldwell and safety Rashad Johnson, will be more talented across the board. Running backs Glen Coffee and Mark Ingram return, and new quarterback Greg McElroy gets to throw to Julio Jones.

6) Ole Miss: Houston Nutt's Rebels were one of the hottest teams in the country down the stretch, providing a glimpse of even better things in '09. Quarterback Jevan Snead will emerge as a potential Heisman candidate, and if Ole Miss can continue developing a defense to complement its explosive offense, the Rebels could have their best season since the '60s.

7) Oklahoma State: The Cowboys proved one of the nation's most dynamic offensive teams in '08, and quarterback Zac Robinson, running back Kendall Hunter and wideouts Dez Bryant and Damian Davis all return. The defense remains under heavy suspicion, but those close to the program expect major improvement with a more experienced front seven.

8) Utah: Don't make the mistake of discounting the Utes just because quarterback Brian Johnson and his receivers are graduating. As you saw in the Sugar Bowl, Utah can play some pretty mean defense. Star pass-rushers Paul Kruger, Stevenson Sylvester and seven other starters return on that side. An experienced line should help the offense rebuild.

9) LSU: The Tigers' slip to the land of five losses should prove to be a one-year aberration. In the Chick-fil-A bowl rout of Georgia Tech, Les Miles found a quarterback he can trust in rising sophomore Jordan Jefferson. Star running back Charles Scott returns as well. The defensive front is still loaded with talent, and a year's experience should help a struggling secondary.

10) Virginia Tech: The Hokies are one of just three teams nationally to post five straight 10-win seasons, and they did it this year despite some major rebuilding. Tech will enter '09 with a solidly entrenched quarterback (Tyrod Taylor), a budding star tailback (Darren Evans) and another typically dominant, Bud Foster-led defense (featuring seven returning starters).

Keep an eye on: Oregon, Boise State, Georgia Tech, Penn State, Oregon State.

Despite the favorable schedule, I look for the Tide to fall out of the top tier of the ncaa next season. BTW, I read last week Coffee is leaving for the league?

Notre Dame has 1 team in the Top 25 on their schedule.

and SC can bring their entire offense back and it won't replace the defensive guys that they're losing. They're loaded with talent as always, but they're pretty green up the middle.

Cie Grant,

I agree. It will be hard to replace the three offensive linemen and the QB. They obviously are doing well getting talent, but I thinknext year they will have trouble scoring (at least early on). Also, losing Coffe will not help although they have talent at RB. It will be hard to run though with an inexperienced line...

Ohio but not a Buckeye
3,4 and 5 are way too high

I'll give you Alabama, and maybe Oklahoma...but USC has more talent than anyone in the country and with Mays and CJ Gable returning, along with I'd expect Sanchez to come back, he's not ready nor will be picked high, the Trojans could bolster an explosive offense with a solid defense. Carroll is always going to have a good solid D.

As a SC fan I'm worried about the Def.
I don't think they'll be in big trouble but SC will lose a couple of stud defensive players and a few
more good tough players too.

What I'm thinking is the Pac-10 was not really
a great Offensive conference this season. Even if the Def is a couple notches down from this year I think they'll still finish in the top of the Pac-10 defensive catagory's.

I think they are a top 5 team for sure.

ESPN has already crowned Florida back to back
BCS Titles and has given Tebow his 2nd heisman.
:nono: Will see if Tebow can take the SEC's best shot week in and out. For Christ sake coaches have 3 years of game film on him now.
I gotta feeling he'll be contained by a few
defense's next season.
Florida those have a awesome Def.
Major Wright is a beast.
He reminds me of Sean Taylor RIP.
I don't know if he's eligible for the NFL
but he looks like a top 5 pick to me.

Florida , USC , Bama , Texas , Okla,
seem like all are worthy for the top 5.

Florida has to be 1... 2-5 really is a toss up .

Right or wrong Florida and Texas will be a consensus 1-2.

By the way - Sam Bradford today made the worst career decision since Shelly Long quit Cheers.

Dont get me wrong- I am all about kids going back to school so in that sense good for him. But this decision makes zero sense, especially since he still wont have a degree when he goes pro next year. He has no more upside, loses most of his OLine, there is likely to be a rookie wage scale or a lockout after this season, etc.

Maybe he don't wanna play for the Lions.
I'd think he goes #1
That would be the only reason I'd come back
to school after that fantastic season.

Or maybe he just enjoys playing college football, his teammates, the program, and he feels like they have another shot at the title next year. I think they've figured out the rookie wage scale is a long shot to appear next year. As far as financially, I think he started to get word that he might actually go somewhere between 10-20 and that he does still have some upside as far as draft position. Before the NC game he took out a large insurance policy on himself so staying healthy is not a huge worry. The o-line will not be as good next year but they are still expected to be very good. This year's line might go down as the best Oklahoma line ever. The only question on offense will be at receiver. The defense returns 9 starters with the addition of Reynolds who hurt his knee in the Texas game and Box who took over for Reynolds and then got hurt later on in the season. To say that being ranked #4 preseason is an over ranked team is absurd in my opinion.

Wow, with Spikes back for Florida that defense is going to be unreal. Next year is going to be a very good year for college football. Hopefully injuries and grades don't get in the way.
