Interesting if this is legit.

DIOXIN CARCINOGEN
Subject: Dioxin Carcinogen

Don't freeze your plastic water bottles with water

It is highly important that you should take time to read this. This
information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Dioxin Carcinogens causes cancer. Especially breast cancer. Don't freeze
your plastic water bottles with water as this also releases dioxin in the
plastic. Dr. Edward Fujimoto from Castle hospital was on a TV program
explaining this health hazard. (He is the manager of the Wellness Program at
the hospital.) He was talking about dioxin and how bad they are for us.

He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using
plastic containers. This applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the
combination of fat, high heat and plastics releases dioxin into the food and
ultimately into the cells of the body. Dioxin are carcinogens and highly
toxic to the cells of our bodies. Instead, he recommends using glass,
Corning Ware, or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same
results...without the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners,
instant ramen and soups , etc., should be removed from the container and
heated in something else. Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the
paper. Just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc. He said we
might remember when some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the
foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons. To add
to this: Saran wrap placed over foods as they are nuked, with the high heat,
actually drips poisonous toxins into the food, use paper towels. pass this
on to your friends...

looks like this is from 2002. Snopes says it is UNDETERMINED on whether or not this is true or false. Read about it here

I think this is yet another Internet hoax also. While researching it, though, I found a supposed e-mail for Ms. Mastbrook so I've written to her asking for a copy of the report. Interestingly, the address hasn't bounced back yet. I'll post if I ever receive a response.

"Can freezing a PET beverage bottle cause dioxins to leach into its contents?

This is the subject of another e-mail hoax. There simply is no scientific basis to support the claim that PET bottles will release dioxin when frozen. Dioxins are a family of chemical compounds that are produced by combustion at extremely high temperatures. They can only be formed at temperatures well above 700 degrees Fahrenheit; they cannot be formed at room temperature or in freezing temperatures. Moreover, there is no reasonable scientific basis for expecting dioxins to be present in plastic food or beverage containers in the first place."

P.S. From everything that I've found Dr. Fujimoto is a PhD-type doctor. Doesn't PhD stand for "Piled high and Deep"? :moon:

I did receive an e-mail from Nancy Mastbrook and she replied:
"The original message was sent to me by a friend, and I in turned forwarded it to my friends. I did further research on the subject and found the additional info. Hope it helps."

She included articles including:

Plastics and the Microwave By Michelle Meadows

Dioxins, and how bad for us . Posted By: Mushabab Al-Murayeh, MD Date: Tuesday, 15 April 2003, at 11:40 p.m.

SEVENT (sic) GRADE STUDENT FINDS CARCINOGEN IN PLASTIC FOOD WRAP - Aug 4, 2002. no author cited

If anyone's truly interested, ask MJ for my e-mail address and I'll be happy to forward the whole mess! :)
