Pay money to Pay my Bill

My guess is you either paid the day it was due or it was overdue- and yes it is legal to do that. That is why it's called a Convenience Fee (correct spelling btw). You are inconveniencing them because they have to go to extra lengths to have such a "service" for people who don't pay their bill in a timely manner.

Take for example- I have customers who like to pay their bill by credit card over the phone. Which means I have to key in their credit card info and that bumps me into a higher tier rate charge than if I swipe their card. In all fairness I should charge them extra for that but I don't. There are some businesses in town that will automatically charge you a base percentage if you want to pay by credit card instead of cash or check- just because it's their right to pass those fees along. That is also legal. Some do it and some don't. All in all my monthly credit card charges are about $150 a month. So for all the credit cards I run a month is it really worth pissing a customer off over a few bucks and losing out on all those future vehicle repairs and referrals? No. But every business is entitled to do as they please.
