Anti-war leaders respond to Obama?s Afghanistan speech

Wednesday, June 22, 2011 7:02

<!--INFOLINKS_ON-->Minneapolis, MN - Responding to President Obama?s June 22 national televised speech on Afghanistan, Meredith Aby of the Twin Cites based Anti War Committee stated, ?The U.S. needs to get out of Afghanistan now.? Aby was one of the main organizers of the massive anti-war march on the opening day of the 2008 Republican National Convention and she is one of the 23 peace and international solidarity activists who have been subpoenaed to appear in front of the Chicago grand jury investigating ?material support for terrorism.? The grand jury, headed by U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald, is attempting to criminalize anti-war activism.
Commenting on the president?s speech, Aby stated, ?The president has been forced to announce a small withdrawal because the American people are overwhelmingly opposed to the U.S. occupation of Afghanistan. However, just like Obama did with Iraq last year, he is trying to muddle the debate by announcing a ?withdrawal? when in fact he is continuing the occupation. The American public does not want to fund death and destruction and instead is concerned about the cost to important social programs at home. We need to continue to protest for all the troops to be brought home.?

Tracy Molm, a member of Students for Democratic Society, said this about the president?s speech, ?What the U.S. is doing in Afghanistan is wrong and the people of Afghanistan are suffering because of it. The U.S. and its allies are backing a corrupt puppet government that the Afghan people do not support. On top of that, the U.S. government is responsible for a massive number of civilians being killed and injured.?

Steff Yorek, the Political Secretary of Freedom Road Socialist Organization states, ?No one, including the people of Afghanistan, wants to live under occupation of a foreign power, so they have created a massive resistance to that occupation. The announcement that 10,000 out of the 100,000-plus troops in Afghanistan will leave does not cut it. All the troops need to come home now.?

So now we know Bambi's, errr, Duff's real name.

The withdrawal of 30k troops by next year will leave us with more troops on the ground than when O took office. Embarrassing.

In fainess to Obama he said he would end Iraq but he did not say he would end Afghan. He is only doing what the military leaders are telling him to do.

As someone who is against both wars as they were fought I am pissed. But those who championed the wars when Bush was running them should be happy he is following the same bad advise Bush was.

this is no longer a Bush issue
FFS !

why does everything lead back to him?

maybe we can blame the excessive heat on him as well, because it's fucking hot here for the last 3 days and it is going to continue !

It's Obama's parade now !

What was Barry's stance on the war as a Senator?

Let's wait and watch Barry pussyfoot around his fundraiser with the LBGT folks today and his moonwalk away from Gay Marriage !

Watching on MSNBC, known LIARS ! Jonathon Capehart lied, again ! Stating that not one Republican comes close to Barry when it come to Gay rights and marriage ! Really ? :mj07:

I suggest looking up, uhhh you know who and his stance.

Carry on :0008

Right behind you
Viet Nam:

Justification - ?If South Vietnam falls to the Communist, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Burma, India and Pakistan would also fall like dominos. The Pacific Islands and even Australia could be at risk?.

Cost - 58,000 Americans KIA, $686 billion spent (2008 dollars).

Result - We were defeated, fled VN and the commies didn't take over as predicted. If we had never gone to VN, nothing bad would have happened. Money and men down a rat hole,

Iraq

Justification - "If we don't fight "them" there, we will have to fight "them" here".

Cost, so far, 4500 KIA, 29,000 seriously wounded, one trillion spent.

Result - We haven't defeated "them" and they haven't come here. Money and men down a rat hole.

Afghanistan

Justification - Defeat Al Qaeda

Cost, so far, 1081 KIA, 9971 seriously wounded, $400 billion spent.

Result - AQ has simply packed up and moved to Pakistan and Yemen.

We should withdraw every single soldier and piece of equipment from Iraq and Afghanistan this afternoon. we are throwing money and men down yet another rat hole.

If the Afghans want to let the Taliban take over and turn them back into a 12th century civilization, fine with me. They can play polo with each others heads as long as they like.

Ike warned us, but WE, the voting public, are too stupid to understand what he said.

?Every gun that's made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed. This world in arms...is spending the genius of its scientists, the sweat of its laborers,

?When people speak to you about a preventive war, you tell them to go and fight it. After my experience, I have come to hate war. War settles nothing.?

?I find war detestable but those who praise it without participating in it even more so?

And here's one for the Maggot -

"Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes that you can do these things. Among them are a few Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or businessman from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid."
? Dwight D. Eisenhower

Perhaps the last honest politician in the USA.

Yes this certainly is a Bush Issue. It is an Obama issue also. But let us not be so blind as to elect a the same bunch that started this mess because Obama is just carrying it on.

They are both wrong!

yes they are both wrong, but Gee Wiz doesn't move troops around and push the button on Foreign Leaders any more.

Bush isn't in charge of the TSA, the ATF FBI, CIA, NSA or the Mouseketeers !

Have you been paying attention to my stance on anything?

I know they are both "face down and ass up" when they visit Wall Street !

Then they shove it up our asses and then punch us in the mouth when they are done.

No Kiss ! No Reach around, no dinner, not even a ride home !

Iraq was a done deal when O took over--
He was the one trying to wave the white flag on Iraq during surge if you remember--I believe you have Iraq confused with Gitmo

His latest speach was biggest grift yet on wars--as Cie said previously--acting like he's reducing troops per promise while actually increasing them--I first thought --he stepped in it this time as this grift will be recognized by everyone-
-but apparently not :SIB

Seems to me we are still in Iraq but what do YOU not like about the way he is handling another of Bush's messes Afghanastan. Myself, I would of broght troops home the day I got in. Let them fight it out and deal with the winners. But I know you championed this fight in Afghan. So......what is your problem with what Obama is doing.....or is it just that Obama is doing it and not Bush?

Steve I have serious questions on why anyone GW or O rebs or dems-would want to implement a surge knowing casualties will increase only to speak about withdrawing within a year.

Either you throw in the towell and do timely withdrawal or increase troops and try and win.

Afgan is no better off after our increase of troops than they were prior--and not faulting O on lack of success as would have been same under any pres--its the nature of the country/terrain.

--on flip side the drones have been huge success and I appluad the use of them and imo that is only way to fight that war.
