Hoping that some of you out there in big music cities can throw a few good CD recomendations my way. Last few years I have really been into bands like Garbage, Hole, Slater Kinney etc. Most of the shit I hear on the radio these days is complete crap, so I want to know whats out there that I might be missing.

Not from a big music city at all, but here's a few I've enjoyed recently. . .

Audioslave. I think this is a great CD. A great melding of a great voice with a heavy yet funky band. If you like soundgarden, I think you'll like this if you give it a chance. The two releases are far from the best on the album. Check out "Gasoline" or "Set it Off" for a couple of good hooks on that one.

Flaming Lips "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots". Weird and electronic at first, but some great melodies. Works better as a whole album than a collection of singles.

I'll tell ya, that Norah Jones is just a strong strong album. Too good for even the Grammys to overlook.

Haven't enjoyed the "50 Cent" nearly as much as some other hip-hop. He's not a strong rapper, and Dre and Eminem (co-producers on it) can only do so much for a guy with mediocre skills.

Good punk-girl bands? Don't know of any. I don't know the story of the "Donnas", but I'll be damned if they're not just a record company assembly line band. Punk girl, hippy girl, school girl, leather girl. What a quartet of posers.

That's all I got. Not much exciting on the radio right now, especially around DC. Lucinda Williams has something coming out in April which is supposed to rock, unlike her last, and worst, album.

That's all I'm looking forward to right now.

Donnas

I'm not a punk-girl band fan.

Does No Doubt count? They have really hit the mainstream.

Give the Donnas a chance. They have some major support behind them and thier lyrics are good. They write all thier own music and lyrics. They are kinda like dudes in chick bodies with lines like "I think I want you on the floor, take it off!" & "c'mon baby fill me up". Follow this link, I'm sure you will be pleased.

Have you checked out the Breeders? Going back a few years, there is X, an L.A. punk band from the mid-80's fronted by a woman. Pretenders, of course. So far outta of the loop when it comes to anything underground these days.....

I, too, was disapointed in Lucinda's last record. "Car Wheels" was a fantastic disc, then this last one disapointed me a lot. Which was too bad as a local guy(well, Iowa City..an hour away) by the name of Bo Ramsey played guitar and produced her last disc. Toured with the band as well. If you are interested in his stuff(blues oriented), check out this site. www.boramsey.com

Also, check out the link to Trailer Records from his site, too. Lots of great stuff available.

I really like No Doubt. "Rock Steady" and "Tragic Kingdom" are their 2 best CD's IMO. Although they may be more pop-ish than what you're looking for.

he he...knew JT and Reds would do me proud - u gotta have Concrete Blonde and the Breeders....

if u r after comic-book punk , u gotta also have L7 from the 'riot grrrl" era...."Bricks Are Heavy" is a fun album and "Shitlist" is an alltime classic...

also a heads-up for the Consolidated/Yeastie Girls single from said era, "You Suck", an ode to cunning linguists everywhere
