Cold spring kills songbirds in Minnesota
(Published May 07, 2008)
MINNEAPOLIS ? The chilly, snowy spring has killed scores of songbirds in the northern two-thirds of Minnesota.

Officials of the state Department of Natural Resources have received many reports of dead swallows, bluebirds, kinglets, sparrows, robins and warblers since last week.

ADVERTISEMENTThe birds apparently starved to death because of a lack of insects caused by cold weather and late-April snow.

Such a large bird die-off is unusual, officials said.

"I don't remember anything quite as dramatic," Carroll Henderson, DNR nongame wildlife program leader, told the Star Tribune. Henderson said the area from the Twin Cities north was affected.

Mike North, of rural Brainerd, works for the DNR's division of ecological resources. North spotted a lethargic tree swallow sitting along a county road, then checked his nesting boxes on his property and found 19 dead tree swallows.

"One box had nine dead birds in it, huddled together, apparently trying to stay warm," he said.

At Crow Wing State Park, 27 swallows and two bluebirds were found dead in nest boxes.

Because of the cold spring, migrating songbirds found few insects when they arrived. Then a foot or more of snow hit northern Minnesota on April 25 and 26. Insect-eating birds couldn't find food, and starved.

Officials say there's no way to know how many birds died.

"It could easily be in the thousands, based on the reports we've received," Henderson said. He urged people with bird-nesting boxes to check them and remove any dead birds so later migrants can use the boxes, and also to report any banded birds they find.

Birds probably can find food now that recent warmer weather has melted snow and encouraged insect production, Henderson said. But he said there's nothing people can do to help hungry insect-eating birds.

"It may depress (songbird) numbers in Minnesota in the short term, but they should bounce back," Henderson said.

I believe I remember Al or some other nut saying that colder than normal temperatures are to be expected from time to time and that they are proof in itself that global warming is happening. Go figure.

I remembered when Gores words were spun to mislead like he created the internet. Clear thinkers knew this is what he actually said. Like me i always side with the person who has a little foresight. Kinda like Obama had with this farce of a war but then again a two year old should have known about these jackoffs agenda.

In a March 9, 1999 interview on CNN's Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer, Gore stated, "During my service in the United States Congress I took the initiative in creating the internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system."[110] This statement was often misquoted by media outlets and led to the creation of a widely spread urban legend that Gore claimed to have "invented the Internet."[111]

In response to the controversy, Cerf and Kahn argued that, "We don't think, as some people have argued, that Gore intended to claim he 'invented' the Internet. Moreover, there is no question in our minds that while serving as Senator, Gore's initiatives had a significant and beneficial effect on the still-evolving Internet."[112]

and to the cons who have their ghillie suit on and their pot of coffee brewing in their bunker. . . g' night

Just think, a couple of years ago I would have had no idea what a ghillie suit is. But then sixfive (who else) worked it into one of his threads, I asked wtf it was, he answered with a picture. I guess I still don't know who the hell would wear one, but I can picture it now. Good work, Robert.

Deep in the heart of Texas
George Bush is obviously at fault. Had he not dug tunnels into the bedrock under his home in Crawford, to save on his energy consumption, this may not have been one of the coolest Aprils on record. Thank God for Al gore who through his judicious buying of energy credits kept the blastfurnaces at his Nashville home operating, averting the mini ice age which was to preceed global warming!

Muslim is a belief system. Nobody is born with beliefs. He obviously did not grow up a Muslim or is currently a Muslim.

This card will be played quite a bit, however, and I'm sure it will have an effect on millions of people who wouldn't vote for him anyway.

as far as they`re concerned he`s a muslim....this isn`t christianity we`re talking here...

if you`re born a muslim, and leave the faith, you`re ass isn`t worth the toilet paper you wipe it with...

this could create some issues down the road with strict muslim societies down the road...

and i though hussein was an irish name(maybe i`m thinking o`bama).....:D

it`s called apostasy...truth is,i don't see obama's move from muslim to afro-centric black liberation theology (shared by nation of islam devotees) as a "conversion to christianity".....it has little to do with christianity as far as i can make out....

however, we`ll see whether the islamists want to split hairs over such 'nuances'......

bock just might become a liability.....:SIB .
