No joke here. Look up a book called the 4 agreements and read it thoroughly. It will improve your quality of life, and even moreso thos around you.
As for the AC, there is no reason to replace it now, particularly since you have a split system. Your family can sleep upstairs fo the 2 days that your system is down when it eventually goes. For the record, I had a similar situation when I bought this house, Have been here since 2005 without incident, although I was told it could go any day.
