Broncos face tough test against Northern Iowa


The casual college basketball fan might not bat an eye upon hearing Ben Jacobson and the University of Northern Iowa will visit Kalamazoo.

Allow Western Michigan University guards Brian Snider and Stane's Bufford to put Wednesday night's game against the Panthers into perspective.

Snider on Jacobson: ``He's better than anybody I've played against in the MAC.''


Bufford on the Panthers: ``It's a big game. We don't get too many opportunities to play against teams as highly rated as them.''

Neither statement is an exaggeration.

Jacobson, a 6-foot-3 guard, led the Missouri Valley Conference in scoring (17.9 ppg) last season and is the favorite to win the league's player-of-the-year honor.

The Panthers, meanwhile, have all five starters back from a team that finished 21-11 and lost a first-round NCAA tournament game by five points to eventual Elite Eight participant Wisconsin.

Throw in the fact Sports Illustrated ranked Northern Iowa No. 17 in its preseason poll, and it's easy to make the case that this is the most compelling nonconference game on WMU's schedule.

``Obviously it's a really good measuring stick for us,'' Snider said. ``Since I've been here, we haven't played anybody ranked that high. We'll find out a lot about ourselves as far as where we're at.''

The Broncos learned a great deal about UNI last season, when Jacobson led the Panthers to an 86-75 victory against WMU in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

``He's a (future) NBA player,'' WMU coach Steve Hawkins said. ``He had 27 points against us and if you were at the game, you would have swore he had 14. He can drop 30 on you and do it in the most unselfish way and most unassuming way.''

WMU guard Michael Redell, who is redshirting this season, wore a yellow jersey with the number 12 on the back while playing the role of Jacobson during practice on Monday. Snider compares Jacobson's game to another No. 12 -- the Chicago Bulls' Kirk Hinrich.

``He's a guy that can put it on the floor, get to the basket, shoot the 3 (pointer) and who is a pretty good athlete,'' Snider said. ``He's one of the best players in the country.''

Other top players for UNI are 6-foot-4 guard Erik Crawford, an All-MVC honorable mention selection last season, and Eric Coleman, a 6-foot-6 forward who is the reigning MVC Freshman of the Year. Coleman scored a team-high 17 points in UNI's 68-46 victory against Western Carolina on Sunday.

``This is a top-20 team in the nation, at least according to some publications, and they execute at a very high level,'' Hawkins said. ``Playing these guys will help us get a lot better.

``These guys will really make us play.''

Defense, defense, defense. Coach Steve Hawkins spent the majority of Monday's practice working on slowing down the Panthers, who, Hawkins said, ``Run 1,000 set plays, so it's impossible to (focus) on two, three or four plays defensively. Limiting UNI to one shot per possession is critical.''

How Northern Iowa wins

By doing what the Panthers do -- frustrating opposing defenses with an endless series of screens, then hitting for a high percentage from the perimeter.

Against Arkansas State, senior guard Jamall Edmondson scored 11 of his career-high 15 points in the second half and hit 5-of-6 clutch free throws over the final minute of play to ice MSU's five-point win over the Indians of the Sun Belt Conference. Freshman swingman Jamont Gordon tallied 15 of his season-high 16 points in the opening half of the Arkansas State contest.

Having begun the current campaign without services of all five starters from the previous year for the first time since the post Final Four season of 1996-97, the Bulldog?s leader return scorer is Edmondson at 4.8 ppg. Minus their top six scorers and rebounders from last season?s 23-11 NCAA Tournament team, the new bulldogs are supporting six Freshman, yet these freshman do have talent. If Stansbury will play the Freshman, he will keep it close enough to cover and give the 49ers a close one.
